The new North Atlantic gas bar and Orange Store on the corner of Southland's Boulevard and Great Southern Drive is now open. The Orange Store is in the centre of the building with leasable space on each side. I have now heard that the smaller space to the right will be a pizza chain. I don't know which one. Likely another Domino's, although I would love to see a Papa John's, since they are in most provinces and it's time they set up shop here. The larger space on the left which also contains a drive thru will be a Dairy Queen.

Can anyone confirm these rumours ? Seems like a very small space to have a Dairy Queen ? And not much parking. Anyone with any info ?

Supposedly the Woodgate Plaza is going to be taken down, except for the Toys R Us section, and then rebuilt in a different configuration. This will be similar to what they did with the plaza that Golden Phoenix used to be attached to, and we now know as Globo, Roots, etc. As well (supposedly), a bridge will be built over the river connecting the parking lots. This would reinforce someone saying they saw pictures being taken of the river.

Imperial Oil has sold Esso in Canada

Apparently the Newfoundland locations were sold to Wilson Oil of Nova Scotia. So I guess a rebranding is in the future for the Esso locations here in Newfoundland. Wilson's branding looks kinda dated and comes across as a small family gas stop based on the few photos i could find on Google.

Kind of reminds me of the Western Petroleum stations located throughout the province. That reminds me, does anyone else find it ironic that a gas retailer owned and operated in Canada'a most easterly province is called "Western Petroleum"? Just read on their website the company was founded on the west coast... still a bit funny though.

I am familiar with Wilsons gas from travels to Nova Scotia. I didn't know they are already the Esso retailer ( as per article ) in Nova Scotia.

I was driving downtown yesterday and was surprised to see that Fogtown Barbershop on Prescott St was gone...only to be pleasantly made aware that they are moving around the corner to Water Street from its Prescott St location into a larger space due to its popularity. Nice to see a local business prosper and grow.

Yeah that was actually announced a few months ago in the telegram I believe. I think they planned to move earlier but had to do some work on the new place. It is a very popular spot. I go there and they are always busy. Rock and punk music plays constantly, the barbers openly curse and you can even flip through a Playboy while you wait...I love it!

Heard a rumour recently that Loblaws has purchased the now bankrupted ACAN Windows building on McNamara Drive opposite the brand new Sobeys. Can anyone confirm this rumour? That wouldn't be surprising. Apparently that new Sobeys in Paradise has affected sales at Dominion in Mt Pearls Pearlgate location.

An interesting new business, From the Wharf, is aiming to create an online market place to allow individuals and restaurants to purchase seafood directly from local harvesters. Something like an Etsy for fish. The business model is made possible by the recent change in provincial legislation allowing direct sales from harvesters. If you live in the St. John's metro area, your order is delivered to your door for $5. The site is set to launch formally in May, but I just ordered some snow crab last night. Good to see St. John's at the forefront of local seafood e-commerce.

I found the service to be excellent.

Ordered via the website on Sunday morning and could pay with credit card or PayPal. Received by email an order confirmation right away. Because this was From the Wharf's first batch of orders, the owner, Blaine Edwards, sent an email to everyone discussing the delivery process Sunday night. On Monday late morning, the fisherman, Bay Bulls' Jason Sullivan ( https://twitter.com/meanysisland ), delivered a plastic-lined box containing four live snow crabs on ice to my apartment (he landed at St. John's wharf earlier that morning). About an hour later I received an email confirming delivery. That evening, to my delight, but the crabs' dismay, the crab were boiled for ten minutes and eaten with a bottle of white wine and a quantity of melted butter that will not be discussed further.

I look forward to ordering from From the Wharf again ( https://fromthewharf.com/ ). In addition to the convenience, I really enjoy how From the Wharf personally connects the local customer with the local fisherman.
