5800 Naples Plaza, Long Beach, 1966....photo courtesy Long Beach Fireman's collection housed at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Bobby and The Maus Marks were a blue-eyed soul combo fronted by Brit expat Bobby Sansom..... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...370&fit=bounds The group cut a few sides for the Sublime label in '65.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx6Q...annel=Soulhawk https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...370&fit=bounds A mini-bio excerpt from Sansom's web page (he's still working)..... Bobby started out fronting a rock band in England known as 'Bobby Sansom & The Giants'..... Bob was offered a chance to come to Los Angeles and record, so he did, and formed a group called 'BOBBY SANSOM & THE MAUS MARKS'. He continued his recording career with Ernie Freeman, a very successful producer-arranger of such artists as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Petula Clark. Bob and his band performed in all the major clubs in Hollywood and L.A. such as 'Whiskey-A-Go-Go' and 'P.J.'s'., and released several records. One of them 'Don't Leave' that got to #2 in the San Francisco hit charts, and also did well in L.A. Soon after Bob was a offered a chance to go solo, and released several records which led to his being offered a chance to emcee and be featured in a revue in Las Vegas called 'THE FUNKY SOUL REVUE' at the Aladdin Hotel, which ran for three months. The 2nd St. East building survives..... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds gsv |

At address 5782, mere steps west on 2nd St. from the above, is this humble building: https://i.postimg.cc/1XnhNdzP/57822nd-St.jpg gsv It is in the Naples area in the city of Long Beach. At least into the 1960s, on the near corner of the roof of this building stood a well-done life-size statue of a mild-looking 1930-ish woman . . . with a devil's type tail arching from beneath her dress behind her. At length, the tail was broken off . . . and then the whole statue disappeared. I can find neither picture nor reference to this interesting statue; and yet I saw it literally hundreds of times, as it was on a main route my family would take into Long Beach proper. It would always give my youthful mind pause, and I would reflect on just what it was supposed to signify, and why it was there. I am certain that at some point some perhaps local newspaper ran a story on it, after its disappearance, I think; but I can find nothing of it, and thought I'd air the matter here for better sleuths than myself to try their hands at. |

That was a fun listen! I noticed on the banner in the 2nd Street East photo it says, "Direct from the Haunted House in Hollywood." A comment on the youtube "song" video: Does anyone remember Bobby Sansom and the Maus-Marks playing for quite some time at the Warehouse Nine in West L.A. in the late '60's. Those were some fun days and the club was very popular. It was very crowded especially on the weekends with mostly college age kids. Anyone heard of the Warehouse Nine? |
Martin, it was actually Warehouse IX....1968 West L.A. directory....

This rare snapshot was listed on eBay a few weeks ago. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/3BLOJB.jpg I could be wrong but I don't think we have seen this particular bathhouse. Wondering when the last working bathhouse went out of business in Venice... |

That's a fun little discovery, Hoss. . .Bravo! Is the burnt out building across the street the Pacific Hotel / Apts. in the 1964 photo. .or are my directions discombobulated? . |

And what's the last word on that neon sign, The Crystal _ _ _ _ _ _? It looks to me like it says SHARPE. (But it's probably Shoppe?) |

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Shoppe1(1).jpg newspaperarchive.com Several of the later episodes of "CHiPs" were filmed in this area. Historic Aerials shows this block as a parking lot by 1980, but it seems to show the Duce Club building still standing. I wonder if it ever appeared. |
I, for one, would like to see more of your "CHiPs" screenshots. :)

Here's an enigmatic snapshot I happened upon last night on eBay. "FOUND Original Photo Thomas Ince Studio Exposition Park Building Sign" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/UpFQkr.jpg What makes it "enigmatic" is the location, Exposition Park... If I remember correctly, Inceville, the studio ranch, was located out in Malibu and Thomas Ince Studios was located on Washington Blvd. in Culver City. (in the early years, I believe there was also a location in Edenville) Was there also, at one point in time, an Ince 'outpost' in Exposition Park or is the photograph simply mislabeled? The same information was written on the back of the photograph. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/6...922/MEiPAf.jpg I thought the sign might include some clues but, as far as I can tell, it doesn't. :( https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/4TRqLi.jpg eBay Link. . |
^^^
Does that say The White House of Motion Pictures? That would signify the famous Colonial mansion building in Culver City, dating from 1919. Maybe there was some convention or gathering of Motion Picture exhibitors in Exposition Park for some reason? There appears to be the same sort of sign on the building in the distance. Great find! Wonder who's in the photo? ETA: I did find in one of those photo books from Arcadia Publishing, "The Movie Studios of Culver City", that the administration building was nicknamed “The Mansion” and Ince would use the building as a symbol in promotional materials, under the banner “The White House of Silent Drama.” |

I bet that's from the 1923 Monroe Doctrine Centennial, American Historical Review and Motion Picture Exhibition at Exposition Park. In my 2018 post on that event, the buildings in the last photo seem to match what we see here. |
