Hearst Tower
New York, USA, 2000-2006

Hearst Tower’s distinctive facetted silhouette rises dramatically above Joseph Urban’s existing six-storey Art Deco building, its main spatial event a vast internal plaza, occupying the entire shell of the historic base. Designed to consume significantly less energy than a conventional New York office building, it is a model of sustainable office design.

I was completely against this tower when it was first proposed for that base, but once it began to rise I fell in love with it. This is one building that guarantees I look up, no matter how many times I pass it.

This tower looks like an evil world headquarters.

I'm usually not a fan of this sort of look. I generally don't like most modern architecture, but I have to admit, this is a good looking building. I like the mix with the old base. Isn't the facade stainless steel? It looks better up close than I expected.

I believe it is.

A one of a kind tower. The lobby is equally as impressive.

Always beautiful...

trout7000 Jul 17, 2011 3:37 PM

The base was originally built by William Randolph Hearst in the 1920's. Hearst had planned a tower, but it was never built. That is until this new Norman Foster design.

I think the lobby base is nothing short of spectacular. Foster's brilliant move was to set the tower within the base and to close the perimeter with glazing, thus flooding the lobby with natural light.

What did the original design look like?

trout7000 Jul 19, 2011 5:33 PM

Apparently, Hearst never got so far as specific design for the tower:

"Hearst commissioned a six-storey Art Deco block on Eighth Avenue to house his publishing empire. When it was completed in 1928 he anticipated that the building would eventually form the base for a landmark tower, though no scheme was ever advanced. Echoing an approach developed in the Reichstag and the Great Court at the British Museum, the challenge in designing such a tower at some seventy years remove was to establish a creative dialogue between old and new."

Here's the base without the tower:

The tower's unusual structural geometry uses less steel than a conventional frame and thus represents less embodied energy.

This from Foster's website - http://www.fosterandpartners.com/Pro...4/Default.aspx

"The new building is also distinctive in environmental terms. It is constructed using 80 percent recycled steel and designed to consume 25 percent less energy than its conventional neighbours. As a result, it is expected to be the first new office building in the city to be given a gold rating under the US Green Buildings Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme..."
