This guy was on our front porch a few days ago. It's a Wolf Spider. It was almost 3 inches across. They aren't poisonous, but they will bite and leave a nasty sore.

More backyard critters. Rain brings all kinds of pests! Actually, the monarch butterflies are migrating back to Mexico this time of year and can be seen everywhere.

This one isn't up to the standard of the rest of this thread, but I thought I'd use this as an excuse to stop the thread falling off the bottom of the page: http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/s...doug/006-3.jpg |

nature shots from Israel

baby tortoise we found wandering in a garden http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4062/...98a824fb_o.jpg At the Hula Nature Reserve in northern Israel (which used to be a swamp, now drained for agriculture, which they now realize was an ecological mistake) they guesstimate a billion birds use the narrow Israeli flyway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Syrian desert to migrate between Europe, Asia and Africa. We saw them catching birds in netting to record and band them. This little birdie was in the process of being banded and sacrificed a few seconds of freedom to be photographed. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/...74784ec0_o.jpg a bee eater showing its irridescent wing feathers http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/...25168e7d_o.jpg catch a bee eater and flip it on its back, and it just lies there, seemingly not with any distress http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4024/...12587445_o.jpg |
