Wonder if this will ever fly? Jetlines press release.... the "delay" is buried at the bottom after their list of highlights and accomplishments.... https://jetlines.ca/2018/03/canada-j...porate-update/ |

Via FB. We now know more of what's going into one part of the expansion. A few downtown stores are opening there. Yellowbelly Brewery and Public House (it also has Yellowbelly Takeaway downtown) will be there, not sure if it's just a bar or has the kitchen part too. Newfoundland Chocolate Company. The Heritage Shop - and then mainstream brands.
The provincial government is getting heavy on ensuring all possible entry points to the province give people a strong sense of place and easy links to "wayfinding" lol, and the majority of all visitors to the province come through YYT, so I expect more of the additions will also be local. http://i63.tinypic.com/wamt50.jpg So the expansion is basically extending the main floor and adding a... third, I guess? It was already two high in the back. So this area will go up another floor (pics via FB): http://i67.tinypic.com/2qldbet.jpg http://i68.tinypic.com/684kyo.jpg This front part I believe stays the same, and the added floor is above where the rooms begin on the right side: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7731/...fe8be4b0_b.jpgBack to Ottawa- now at St. John's airport by shankar s., on Flickr And here is how it looks with the expansion almost complete in this section of the back. So here I think almost the entire top floor is new: http://i63.tinypic.com/apefdh.jpg This is how it was: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7347/...ffb2feb8_b.jpg20160524 110 AC 697 YYT St Johns International by Scott Martyn, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7296/...8b363df4_b.jpgSt. John's Airport, Newfoundland by Joseph Hollick, on Flickr |
^ The hopes for the airport expansion and rebranding of its concessions was a healthy mix of local and national/international stores/restaurants, I think they've done a good job so far with their selections. The "food court" on the main part of the airport will be completely rebranded as well. Tim Hortons may stay, but Coyote Jacks and whatever else is there is getting the boot.
The airport is actually 3 floors high as is, you just can't see it from the front. The first floor is the arrivals hall, baggage and check in. Second floor is departures and security, and the third floor is currently just used as a viewing area. The third floor is planned to be converted into an Air Canada Lounge and restaurant with the renovation. There was a picture on twitter a few months ago of the expansion area; it's pretty much an expansion of what's already there now (really wish they got rid of that low ceiling) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUtSpm3X0AE4tsh.jpg https://twitter.com/Marcogroup/statu...50223296409606 |
Thanks, Marty haha. Took me so long yesterday trying to figure it out to describe it.
So if I understand correctly the part that is currently two floors is expanding out over areas where there currently only one floor, not including that area when you first walk in? Is the current third floor getting any bigger? I thought the footprint is staying the same, and all floors except the first are expanding in size. |

The footprint of the building has expanded: they've added considerable size to the east side, and will be doing the same to the west side once the first expansion is open. Most of this expansion was done to accommodate moving the security screening downstairs, as well as expanding the check-in section. The expanded second floor looks to be above the newly constructed first floor, but also a bit of it building onto the old section of the building as well, so I guess the answer is a bit of both. I don't see anything for an expansion of the third floor. Turns out, there's already an Air Canada lounge up there next to the observation area and admin offices. I'm apparently not special enough to be allowed into that lounge, though. Very good news: a bus route will finally link the airport to the downtown area, 7 days a week, every 30min:

The new terminal in Quebec looks beautiful for the most part, with beautiful décor choices throughout. But couldn't they have done something about the ceiling?
|
Awwww, YQB's getting all growed up. Finally starting to look like a big boy airport. Nice pics on the expansion. The images are so crisp that I first thought I was looking at architectural renderings.

You said it yourself, YUL's max capacity is 25-30M. That will be Vancouver's traffic in 2018. Are we going to use Van City, a city SMALLER than Montreal, as a reference(no offence)? Mirabel's max capacity was basically limitless. A government with vision would have closed YUL if it needed to and use the land for much more optional development. But no, like I said, every single government since the 1970's has been scared to do anything with the big projects and prefer to develop Montreal as a mid-size city. Big megapolises need big projects. |
I think YUL can still grow for 30-50 years with a new terminal with over 50M pax
|
YQB looks incredible and the terminal looks huge for an airport handling only around 1.7M PAX / year, guess they're future-proofing it. Interior looks far more innovative than most Canadian Airports, somewhat European influenced like much of the design in Quebec, well done! Love the booths in the bar!
