I'm not going to cause a stink over it but I have zero sympathy for them at the same time. Can they not learn a few words in French? These people live in Ottawa too. We anglophones expect the world to speak to us in our language. It's even richer when it's a Canadian unwilling to tolerate French.

I would typically agree as I hate when Anglo-Canadians are dismissive of the French language, but in this case it seems to be a more practical concern than an emotional response. At some point, they've decided the inconvenience of avoiding YUL is less than the inconvenience of learning French to the point of understanding announcements (which, let's be real, aren't easy to understand even when you do speak the language). If that's the case, I don't really care what they do.

They could simply walk up to staff and tell them that they didn't understand the message and whether it pertained to them. How do these people function in Asia, Africa, Europe, latin America when they can't even manage in Montreal?

They could, but again, maybe they still consider that more of an inconvenience than flying through somewhere else. I guess in other non-English airports they don't have as "easy" of a work-around so they just deal with it.

I don't disagree that it's silly, just that I don't think it really matters either.

How would it be seen in English Canada if Francophones were avoiding some airports because the French messages came after the English ones? The words "whining","entitled" and "separatists" come in mind when thinking about that.

I wonder how much credence one should give to anecdotes. As YUL gains more and more international flights it also gains more feed from across the country. I doubt that there are many travellers avoiding YUL because of language. If one is in unfamiliar territory ones alert level automatically increases. It's automatic and easy. Those few that avoid YUL because of percieved difficulties or prejudice, are few in number. Most Anglos that recall de Gaulles speech in 67 are elderly or dead. Time to leave this behind. The ship has sailed.

I'd rather we devote another few pages to this latest Acajack anecdote. We can swap topics once lio45 shows up and shares one of his fascinating personal observations about the differences between French and Anglo Canadians.

Don't be silly. They would never do that. They just ask for a Sprite and later sue claiming undue hardship when the only response comes in the form of English. :D

------I kid, I kid.

As is often the case, people stop their chatter when the announcement begins, and when they've heard what they have to hear (in French for most people at YUL) they resume talking and it's more difficult to hear the follow-up message in English.

Anyway, I've heard this randomly from more than one person (all unrelated to each other from different walks of life), so it's obviously a concern for some people.

I’m not saying that I don’t believe you, but this sounds completely iarrational to me. Does that means that these people never travel to foreign countries where english is not the first langage used in airport’s communication?

That’s what I was thinking as well.

There is absolutely no difference.

I would rather we not.

I lived briefly in the Ottawa valley in the late 90s. I don't know anyone who avoided Montreal airports because of language. It was almost always because of having to transfer between a domestic/us airport and an international airport. A problem long solved.

Changing the topic. Swoop, is the goal of this airline to kill off Flair before they become a threat to WestJet or is it a true attempt to create a discount airline?

Yes and yes.

I'm personally perturbed that these discount airlines all target the same airports. Wouldn't it make sense to mix things up a little????

do any airports do announcements ir signage in other languages besides english and french?

I was flying out of YVR yesterday and all the announcements like "this is the last call for flight X to Toronto" are done in English only.

the departure/arrivals screens do english, french and chinese

Most signage is english, french and chinese

Depends on the airline. Both AC and Westjet use automated gate announcements at YVR. Those are in English and French.

At YVR some airlines do announcements in other language
The lufthansa flight will usually have a German speaker do announcents.

Just to clarify, I shared my anecdotes because people were looking for reasons why more people from Ottawa didn't use Montreal's airports.

I wouldn't think much of it if only one person had randomly said it, but a couple of people (over 20 years it's true) likely amounts to this being an issue for at least *some*. Even if it's a silly one for all the reasons people have given on here.
