There will be a camp for 4000 workers up by this time next year.

I haven't seen anything yet in terms of numbers, but I was talking to a Ledcor exec who said both AC and WS are still trying to figure out a way to meet the growing demand for worker transport. Ledcor has started chartering in from YYC and YEG.

I found this:

Quote:

Passenger traffic (YTD) at the Northwest Regional Airport was 135,677 as of June 2019, up by 25.7% from June 2018.

I believe Summit Air is doing a charter a week as well.

Interesting that WS is really pushing the connections from SFO, LAX, PDX, and SEA as well. According to their press release last week, they are seeing quite a bit of connecting traffic. That is really big for them, and very different from the Westjet of yesteryear. I am surprised that they are launching Rome before any Asian destination honestly, you'd think a Tokyo flight would be way more popular than Rome

You answered your own question! All of those airports you just mentioned have flights to Tokyo ( PDX? Pretty sure but didnt check ). So if your goal is attracting connecting passengers from those cities then why serve a destination that PAX can get to without a connection?

WS wants to avoid launching a long haul route with a competitor already on it. Hence why you wont see YYC-NRT before say YYC-ICN. Also explains why they chose YYC-DUB, CDG and now FCO. If you're the only non stop carrier on a route, you can charge a premium for it, moreso than a route with a competitor, when you often times need to match the other's fare to better compete.

LAX and SFO have/will have non stop to Rome as well come summer 2020. Connections help fill a flight, but mostly at trash fares (and therefore yields). O&D is where it's at. Hence why my comment about WS betting it all on YYC.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the REM has arrived in Montreal. They need to assemble and test it (as it came in pieces). Digging begins in a few months. Multi level car park at the airport will soon be demolished, as most of the structure is at end of life. Airport REM station will go below the new car park. It will be a clusterf*ck at YUL for the next 5-10 years, but it must be done.

This is a ground-breaking situation in Montréal and Québec. Until now, the construction of the metro had systematically been carried out by drilling and blasting. This is the first time that a TBM of this type has been used–capable of both digging through rock and assembling the tunnel.

The TBM will dig a 3.5-km tunnel between the Technoparc and Montréal-Trudeau airport. The REM’s route will be underground in this area to protect the wetlands of the Technoparc and pass under the airport runways, more than 30 metres below the surface.

Given the huge size of the machine, it had to be delivered in pieces, requiring about 60 trucks. The next step is to assemble and test this specialized equipment, then drilling will begin in the coming months.

Technical information
Supplier: The Robbins Company (Ohio, United States)
Length of the TBM: 100 metres
Tunnel length: 3.5 km
Depth of the starting shaft at the Technoparc: 12 metres (40 feet)
Depth at the airport: 35 metres (115 feet)
Excavation diameter: 7.38 metres
Speed: 1.70 metres per hour, or a ring

The REM at the Montréal-Trudeau airport
Commissioning in 2023
Frequency: 10 min. peak, 15 min. off-peak
Theoretical capacity per departure: 600 people
Universal access: all stations have elevators
Édouard-Montpetit (blue line) to YUL: 21 min.
McGill (green line) to YUL: 24 min.
Central Station (orange line) to YUL: 25 min.

Ya it'll be a clusterf*ck but so worth it. I think all major cities should have lrt or something similar to their airports. YVR's is so awesome.

Essentially the REM going to YUL will be similar to Vancouver's Canada line, but with longer trains and enclosed, heated and air-conditioned stations, with (relatively) easy transfers to 3 of the 4 métro lines.

Well they're better than a transfer at Waterfront... what a bad connecting station.

Perhaps because that building was built before lrt was ever invented let alone brought to Vancouver?

There's a possibility of another platform next the the Expo Line one, the Canada Line could have turned to align with it, heck, even directed towards Stanley Park.

Is the tunnel at YUL going to be expanded to service the VIA train station?

You can pick up lots of Traffic form Canada heading to Rome, Edmonton, Vancouver, Victoria plus Calgary should be enough to sustain the flight. But YYC and YYZ where they have low costs, connections and large brand following is the right play.

I don't get why people think Asia is possible for Wesst Jet, too much competition from YVR where there are cheap flights.

It's being studied by the federal government now.

Fingers crossed it happens. It would be a logical extension. Might as well do it while the tunnelling equipment is already in place.

I seem to recall that when the REM project was announced, one of the harshest criticisms was that it stopped (ridiculously) short of a link to VIA at Dorval.

CityTech Nov 5, 2019 5:09 PM

The REM is a great project, but one of its main issues is that it doesn't focus enough on interconnections. Witness how it stops short of Dorval and passes north of the Orange Line in the St. Laurent borough with no connection. At first, they also planned on not having any connections with the Blue or Green lines either despite literally passing under them; thankfully that was fixed.

Acajack Nov 5, 2019 5:21 PM

That's actually another good thing about REM/CDPQi - they seem fairly nimble and open to making adjustments when a better course of action is presented to them.

You can't build an entire new transit system in just 1 phase. The CAQ has committed to extend the REM for nearly 40 km to Laval and Chambly, 17km in Laval, North Shore, and 22km , South Shore.
