Bridgewood Property Company’s Village on Shepherd at River Oaks (also called the Village at River Oaks in company documents) will fit on the site of the former RR Donnelley printing company building at 1015 S. This is what happens when you start off a project, but don't have all the money raised for it. I hope this is canned altogether. The cost also increased because overtime they've decided to add more features to the project.

Construction of themuch-awaited 70,000-square-foot cultural center that would celebrate Houston history and remake east downtown has suddenly stalled as organizers said they are unable to raise the full $80 million needed.

Only four months after breaking ground on the Nau Center for Texas Heritage - and after years of brushing off questions about the center's ability to raise that much money so quickly - the project is now on pause.

"We knew it would be challenging when we set out to build a state-of-the-art destination on a highly accelerated timeline," said John Nau, a top Houston philanthropist who committed $16 million of his own money to the museum, in a statement. "Skyrocketing construction costs and the challenge of raising $80 million within a short period simply made the project difficult to begin at this time."

The center, which was planned to feature a museum and visitors' center across the street from Minute Maid Park, was originally scheduled to open before the Super Bowl in 2017. Leaders emphasized that they still believed in the project and are still hopeful it can be built in the future.

The Nau Center had only raised $33 million of the $80 million as of November, but Nau said then he felt comfortable beginning construction in order to have the visitors' center ready for the Super Bowl. Ever since the project's conception, Nau expressed confidence that he could raise the money even as the price-tag mushroomed, saying in October 2012, when the cost was about $40 million, that he had talked to many donors and "had no one walk away from us."

I don't think of any airport without scheduled service as that kind of an airport. Houston has plenty of what the FAA calls reliever airports - Sugar Land, Pearland Regional, Hooks, Lone Star Executive (Conroe), Houston Executive, Houston Southwest - but Hobby, Intercontinental and Ellington are the primaries.

Shame about the Nau Center - a victim of higher than expected costs and insufficient fundraising. Despite the slowdown, cost growth is still an issue for most projects.

^^^ I grew up across the street from West Houston Airport.. nothing special. A single runway and typically single engine (propeller) aircraft or small private jets. Think 1/2 of Beaumont's airport.

^^I was actually really looking forward to this. The location is prime once residential and hotel populations are completed and with the convention center (tourists!) so near it would be the best thing for them to see a Houston propoganda factory. I mean this all in good heart btw. Also, the architecture is that of the Texas History Museum in Austin.

A good way to see the smaller airports in the metro is to do a search on YouTube. For example, to see the West Houston Airport, search for something like "landing at West Houston Airport". There are many videos of that. I've probably seen them all. The approach to the runway looks cool from the cockpit when the planes land over the golf course. Lots of greenery and trees around the airport, too.

I'm paying nearly $10,000 in property taxes in Austin for a small, ordinary 1400 ft2 house in a mediocre neighborhood. Of course, the house is worth a fortune so if I sell and move to a cheaper city somewhere...

It's a huge quality of life issue in Austin, causing people to start talking about leaving, because the benefits of living here aren't compensating for those who aren't here to drink and party. Even five years ago things were fairly tolerable.

This being the Houston development thread, I guess we should get back to it, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents since the question came up.
