The heat produced by engines and passangers will anyway be transferred to tunnels and stations, without ACs this process is only slowed down. With AC equipped trains, the situation won't change a lot from what we have now at 13-14 hours.

Even in case of heat surproduction, stations are a lot more cool than inside trains due to heat absorption by large masses of concrete.

1. AC generates about 4 times more heat than it removes (maybe some efficient AC systems are better than this, factor of 3 maybe). If it is already fairly warm on stations and in tunnels - adding more heat will not help. Dissipation of this heat to the walls of tunnels is a very slow process. When new lines are built in Moscow - the temperature of the air is 2-3 deg C higher than for older lines. It takes a couple of years for the temperature to drop 2-3 deg C.

2. Another problem with AC is that it grows dangerous bacteria.

3. Find me an example of completely underground line that uses AC on trains, I'd be intersted to hear if they exist at all.

current length of the metro system - 292.2 km
number of stations - 176

Here is a map of metro and electrichka from www.mosmetro.ru, existing lines in black, proposed and U/C in red; the parts in red to be completed by 2015 (about 60 km more of metro lines).

The red electrichka circle already exists (used now for freight railway), it will be converted to public transit line; the stations shown on the red electrichka circle currently do not exist.

Plans beyond 2015 include completing the second metro ring.

And this will be the problem, as for Russian Railways freight transportation is a lot more profitable, than passenger transportation.
I don't think they'll give this circle line away easily.

If it is done on lines where screen doors completely separate air mass of tunnels from that of stations, like this one

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n-Platform.JPG

it makes good sense to me. Limited volume of stations can be air conditioned on its own, and the heat from trains is deposited into tunnels only, which can be ventilated.

Beijng and other Asian cities are much hotter more humid than Moscow, so they really need it. In Moscow, given the existing infrustructure and climate - more intense ventialtion should solve most of the problems. I do not mind if they air-condition stations at some point, but air-conditioning trains will probably not happen, unless they build entirely new lines with screen doors.

Moscow's stations, both new and old, have always been the best in the world to me aesthetically. The news one in particular are incredible--so understated and elegant. Some of them are nicer looking than a lot of high-end fashion stores.

Amazing pics! I read somewhere that Moscow has some of the deepest stations in the world? Any pics of them?

Also, in one of the pics, there is a picture of LA's skyline for some kind of ad for alcohol? That's interesting. What does the ad say? I can't read Russian. :P
