Found this interesting from an article talking about the future management of Beale Street. It talks about the Tri State Bank site at Beale/Main-- which has been discussed as a possible Hard Rock Hotel but nothing confirmed. This mentions talk of an Embassy Suites on the site, not sure if anyone else has seen anything about that and I may have missed it? It also talks about re-developing the parking lot to the West towards the river to expand Beale.

Who can make Beale Street sing even louder? Ted Evanoff/Commercial Appeal. 5/6/17

http://www.commercialappeal.com/stor...der/101302254/

"Belz, a prominent Memphis developer, recently bought 180 Beale, an important corner fronting Main one block west of the historic district. While talk has surfaced about possibly building an Embassy Suites or other hotel on the site, Belz has not disclosed plans for the property, which was Tri-State Bank’s headquarters. The bank recently moved its head office to 1407 Union and spent $1 million expanding its Whitehaven branch."

From what I can tell you, there have been some on-again, off-again plans to put an Embassy Suites hotel somewhere downtown over the last couple of decades. One of the first proposals I can remember would've replaced the surface parking lot across from Peabody Place on Second Street with a 10-12 story structure (including a garage), and a similar proposal was pitched for another surface lot right next to the Raymond James Tower at one point. Neither plan ever came into fruition.

Whatever becomes of these latest rumors is anyone's guess, though many would like to see the current Hard Rock Cafe be integrated into those plans.

Why Drake & Justin Timberlake Love Memphis: Inside Its Bold New Renaissance

Just came across this article. Seems that opinions on the city are changing. Especially from the period from '08 to '10 where it seemed nothing good was happening and we were on all those terrible lists.

Thoughts ? Now I can see the effect of this working for the Midtown market definitely.

Measure passed that Mayor says will help Memphis become next 'It City' http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/n...p-memphis.html

"The policy will help EDGE fight to help grow the city's population alongside its normal goal of creating jobs, Strickland said, and will hopefully have an "immediate" effect on the Midtown skyline."

Hope so, Midtown is booming with retail, restaurants, etc now. Not many options for newer apartments or anything. I'd assume they'd fill up with no problem.

Neighborhood Docs to expand healthcare coverage in Lamar Avenue corridor
Michael Waddell | High Ground News

Quote:

“Two underutilized buildings (totaling 26,000 square feet) will be completely renovated and connected to create this medical facility,” said Lawrence. “It is quite a neighborhood improvement.” Self + Tucker Architects created the initial designs for the project, and the property owners will have five years under the terms of the Community Builder PILOT to complete the renovations and improvements. The project represents the third EDGE Community Builder PILOT, and EDGE hopes the work on the facility will spark future redevelopment in the neighborhood. The Community Builder PILOT program provides the same incentives that EDGE typically provides to industrial projects, but it is targeted to nonprofit and for-profit entities investing in urban revitalization.

ServiceMaster Almost Ready for First Employees to Occupy Downtown HQ
By K. DENISE JENNINGS/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:

Converting the 360,000-square-foot building from a shuttered shopping mall and movie theater to a global corporate headquarters was no small feat and required innovative design to bring more natural light into the core of the structure. To do so, 141 windows – many of them floor to ceiling – were added, along with a glass ceiling in the atrium as well as translucent interior walls that kill sound and flood light through the massive space. The building also includes a light harvesting system that brightens or darkens depending on the amount of sunlight available, which is reported to save between 20 and 60 percent on energy.

Number of volunteer hours — 25,000. Number of TV viewers — 18.7 million. Cumulative amount of money raised for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital — more than $35 million. A Memphis tradition that dates back 60 years, the FedEx St. Jude Classic (FSJC) has arrived... “To have PGA Tour golf in Memphis for 60 years is something that definitely should be celebrated,” said Darrell Smith, tournament director for the FedEx St. Jude Classic. “A lot of communities out there would really like to have a professional golf event, and for us to have it for 60 years, and the way it is just woven into our community from a volunteer standpoint … it seems like every person you meet in Memphis has a story regarding the PGA Tour golf event in Memphis. It is unique and it is something that we really do treasure.”
