An interesting synopsis of Westjet’s evolution and recent announcement of Sunwing purchase from Cranky Flier:

Westjet and Sunwing

It provides some helpful maps of the operations.

^^

Plugs a massive hole they had in Quebec and the Maritimes, as far as leisure destinations are concerned.

Great not too bad. YYC will probably handle closer to 7 million passengers by year end in 2022 I'm guessing.

We always knew YYC was ahead of YUL in domestic passenger numbers, but that's 2 years now they're even ahead of YVR in that regard. That's impressive !

Yep and Calgary YYC Domestic Passengers traffic will continue to remain strong! That's not changing anytime soon.

With additional Domestic flights by WestJet, Air Canada, Flair & plus
Lynx starting in April 2022 and with most of their Domestic flights through its Hub at YYC should help those numbers increase.

Canadian airlines grapple with fallout from Russia's war on Ukraine
War's impact on airlines
Glen Korstrom, Business in Vancouver - Mar 7, 2022

Quote:

Not only have some flight routes' paths changed, but some routes may be in jeopardy thanks to pricier new flight paths, and spiking oil prices that could result in fuel surcharges, say industry insiders.

Canada has banned Russian planes from its airspace.

While Russia has yet to officially reciprocate and announce that it has banned Canadian planes from its airspace, Canadian airlines, such as Air Canada, have stopped flying over the country.

What had been a non-stop Air Canada route between Vancouver and Delhi flew over Russian airspace.

Other Air Canada routes, such as Vancouver-Beijing and Vancouver-Hong Kong would also fly over Russian airspace, although Air Canada told BIV in an email that it has halted Vancouver-Hong Kong flights until April 22, and is not currently flying to Beijing.

Biman Airlines is super sketchy, it does not have a good rep at all. They were still flying DC-10s up until a few years ago until countries banned them. The fact they want to start services on March 26 but haven't even released it formally is bizarre. They are also notorious for changing routings and schedules. Not a good add IMO. Royal Jordanian is good though!

Biman seems to have gotten better in the past decade. But also they have a long ways to go still. You're right, there's absolutely no way an airline can start flying to a city in Canada less then two weeks after bookings open. That is nuts.

Plus that's nowhere near WG's full network as they had to cancel a lot of smaller cities this winter.

WS finally updated its summer schedule and there’s at least one new route:

YYZ-ORD 1x daily from May 19th. (On Encore DH4).

Also YYC-SNA has been extended to year-round.

Plenty of other changes that I’m far too lazy to summarize right now.

Well, they applied to the CTA and got approval for a license to fly to Canada this past week, so they seem serious enough. And they have new frames to make it work (B77W, B787s). March 26 might be a bit tight, but we might seem them in Toronto come summer.

Biman is still banned from flying to the US mind you, as they’re one of a dozen or so countries in the FAA’s category 2 list. The Bangladesh aviation authority started a process last year to get back to category 1 status, but it’s a long process.

Flair, Swoop, AC, Westjet (Delta), American, United all operating YYZ-ORD in the summer...

WS S22 TATL Changes:

No routes were cut, but many saw frequencies reduced (except for YYZ-LGW which gained).

YYC-LHR 4x weekly
YYC-LGW 3x weekly
YYC-CDG 5x weekly
YYC-FCO 3x weekly
YYC-DUB 3x weekly
YYZ-LGW 9x weekly (New flights: WS40/41 on Tue/Sat)
YYZ-DUB 1x daily
YYZ-GLA 4x weekly
YYZ-BCN 3x weekly
YYZ-EDI 3x weekly
YVR-LGW 1x daily
YHZ-LGW 6x weekly
YHZ-CDG 4x weekly
YHZ-DUB 3x weekly
YHZ-GLA 3x weekly

YYC-LON stays a combined 1x daily with the mix of LHR/LGW. Edit: Both LGW/LHR operate on Wed/Fri. Is a combined 9x weekly.

Others:
YYC-SNA got extended to year-round, 3x weekly in the Summer months.
YYC-BOS finally appears to be launching 2x weekly from late June.

YVR-YKA also being added 1x daily

A couple of domestic/US routes got dropped:
YUL-YWG
YYJ-YOW
YYZ-YMM
YVR-MCO
YYT-MCO

Wondering what happened to the rumoured GEG Link flights? Maybe they were kept out of the OAG filing? Or just not happening?

I'm pleasantly surprised with their TATL schedule. From YYC it seems like only CDG was cut from daily. Did Link get the approval for GEG yet? Maybe that's playing a role.

Looks like WS can now operate their TATL schedule with 6 787s.

At least one route, YEG-YOW has been fully Swoop’d. Flair are picking up YOW-YYJ and operating it 2x weekly.

Calgary YYC - Paris (CDG) last 2 summer seasons on WestJet have been operating between 1-2x weekly. This summer 5x weekly YYC - CDG is reasonable and not too bad as it's a little bit of an increase.

Great! Now we're just waiting for WestJet news release about its Summer 2022 schedule.

It's also an increase over 2019 too when it was 4x weekly.
