I tend to look over other threads and the hate on for AC isn't there. I think this is just an SSP YEG thing. There seems to be some kind of inferiority complex in Edmonton and anything that can go wrong gets blamed on AC.

LH went to YYC instead of YEG, BA went to YYC instead of YEG, KL went to YYC first and put up banners in West Edmonton Mall to connect through Calgary, American is dropping its LAX route, United is reducing IAH and PHX routes, Air Transat has disappeared to Europe. These companies all get a pass on either not coming to YEG or downgrading their service since they are supposedly the only ones that can use the trem "it makes no business sense to serve YEG". Like i said having the name "Canada" is not a prerequisite for offering equal service to all airports in Canada. There will be 5 pages worth of AC bashing once WS starts a supposed YEG-LGW route, yet another WS leisure route with very limited connections to Europe and a lackluster so called "business" product. If AC drops YEG-LHR, then the AC bashing will go up to 10 pages.

Airboy Aug 24, 2015 3:35 PM

In my books WS is just as bad as AC in how they deal with YEG. I will bitch about both, however my preferred travel is on AC. My international travel has been a good experience. Nationally WS and AC are about the same but WS just does not feel right to me. I don't know what it is, that and an incident a couple of years ago with me wife and the lack of a wheel chair. WS not responding to her suggestion that they make sure people who require assistance actually get assistance and are not left in an empty airport at 2am.

I bitch sorry.

On another Airport Note. YMM is proceeding with their next expansion. this will include expanding the terminal and the runway.cost about 75mil. Knowing some of the people involved I was told about this last year. just after the new terminal opened. they felt it need the extra space. There is still remedial work ongoing in the new terminal. the ground level gates are still in need of ceilings.

I have to agree with Airboy - but is it not also fair to say that if the people don't use it, they lose it? I'm from Halifax originally and this was the constant problem for YHZ. They would add new services and within a few years they would disappear because people didn't use it enough. KLM used to fly into YHZ - no longer. This was always a degree of problem for US routes in the winter time.

It also doesn't help that the growth rate of HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality) is pretty low (1% roughly per year) so there isn't as big of a population base, but also I think the airlines didn't advertise the route well in the smaller markets of the maritimes.

For me - AC uses YHZ as a regional hub and all the smaller cities/towns have good connections into the LHR route but AC could do way better when it comes to the US service. United's flights to EWR are just not well timed to connect into the AC network and the ORD flight is gone.

So is the issue with YEG along the same lines as YHZ - use it or lose it? Or is it something else? I've always seen YEG having such potential and I'm excited that Icelandair is coming - I had planned to go to Iceland from YHZ but now may just fly from YEG!

Montreal Trudeau just had its busiest month ever (beating August 2014). YUL had 1,548,959 passengers in July up 5.6% from last year.

The YTD number is 9,040,660 (+4.3%).

International passengers (not including US) number was incredible, up 10.3% from last year.

What's with the leaf? They're horning in on AC's turf!

Bigtime Aug 27, 2015 1:53 PM

Oh man I really wish they had painted in a cheat line on her.

Edit: esquire, with the 67's flying internationally this subtle change of the logo with Maple Leaf was probably done for some international recognition of its Canadian routes. The new logo will be applied to the entire fleet of aircraft in time.

That's what I figured. The question is, would any people actually recognize the heavily modified/stylized maple leaf as a Canadian symbol to begin with?

Bigtime Aug 27, 2015 2:04 PM

Perhaps, better than just that little Canadian flag at the back of the fuselage.

SkydivePilot Aug 27, 2015 9:11 PM

Does anyone know how many '767s WJ is to ultimately have? (6?)

Bigtime Aug 27, 2015 9:14 PM

They purchased 4 so far from Boeing. All four are ex-Qantas birds.

That's pretty cool to see. It feels just like yesterday that WestJet opened for business.

They just grow up so fast, you know? sniff One day they're doing short hops across the country, just finding their way in the world, the next they're off to Europe and then who knows where. sniff I hope they remember to call home sometimes to let us know they're okay.

Anyway... the livery scales up nicely to the 767. I hope that this next phase of WestJet goes well for them.

Wow, all this talk about YVR's international numbers increasing greatly (which they are) and yet YUL's numbers are up about 220k YOY in that category while YVR's up about 140k. That proves it, YUL is silent but deadly.

I thought it best I not mention YYZ's int'l expansion in the same sentence, though...

Here are some numbers for YOW from the Ottawa thread in case anyone is interested:

Dom: 311,249 / 320,865 / +3.1% - amazing the impact a couple of new WS Q400s to YQM & YHZ can have.
TB: 55,211 / 52,363 / -5.2% - worst month since at least 2005 (I only have records going back to 2006). No more US to CLT & cuts on the EWR, IAD & ORD routes. Hopefully AC's Florida flights are doing well.
Int'l: 23,349 / 23,790 / +1.9% - assuming 80% LF for WG's VRA, AC's LHR + FRA averaged 86.3% full in July (also assumes a 100% completion factor of course)
TTL: 389,809 / 397,018 / +1.8%

Sector / YTD 2014 / YTD 2015 / % Change
Dom: 1,951,263 / 1,982,174 / +1.6%
TB: 437,421 / 459,493 / +5.0%
Int'l: 313,274 / 305,242 / -2.6%
TTL: 2,701,958 / 2,746,909 / +1.7%

12 month rolling:

12 Months Rolling / % Change vs Year End 2014
Dom: 3,465,120 / +0.9%
TB: 763,357 / +3.0%
Int'l: 432,922 / -1.8%
TTL: 4,661,399 / +1.0% - now within 24,000 pax of 2012's record.

YYT has typically been focusing its marketing efforts on getting people here... but lately I've noticed them promoting more to get people to leave. It's nice, especially with the much-advertised Dublin and London flights.

But they're also promoting the foreign airline directs:

Cdn airports had been under-performing for many many years. Playing catch up now, especially YVR and YUL.
Let's see if YYZ can touch 50M and YVR 25M by 2018-19.

Ain't gonna happen. You need double digit growth for 2-3 years in a row for those scenarios to happen. Highly unlikely. 2020-21, maybe.

After all, this is Canada we are taking about, not IST or DXB.

We're almost in a recession for heaven's sake.
