That route is already saturated. Flair struggled with it when they started, and I can only imagine the difficulty jetlines will have with it when fares start at $215.

YYZ-LAS will now have 32* weekly departures (based on YYZ website)

Looks like Jetlines is no longer aiming to be a LCC or ULCC.

From their website, they say they are "value-focused leisure airline"... so it's probably more like Sunwing without the package option.

Actually even west of Manitoba Westjet is gutting service. They no longer fly daily from Saskatoon or Regina to Toronto.

Moncton to Toronto and St. John's, NL to Toronto are no longer daily on Westjet either.

Meanwhile AC has maintained these daily flights to Canada's largest airport and city.

And BA is AirLondon, AF AirParis, SU AirMoscow.....

hub and spoke is the name of the game, and the game isn't changing anytime soon. Better get used to it.

WS tried it different. To be everything to everyone. It didn't work.

Interesting. YHZ-DUB & YHZ-GLA nonstop were still bookable a week ago. All that's left is full Y fares via YYZ (or YYC!). In other words, YYZ-Europe is probably toast too.

Such a bizarre airline.

Yup good analogy for YOW...and it's been like that for decades and at one time was even deliberately done to the airport/city by the federal government. Back in the days of regulation, the government would deny routes operating to YOW (e.g., AA wanted to serve YOW-ORD in the 80s and the gov't said no because of AC crying about it) or they'd make ridiculous rules for operating to YOW such as when US was granted authority to launch YOW-PIT it was on the condition that the aircraft had no more than 60 seats. As such, they flew their 65 seat F28s on the route and had to block a row of seats to somehow protect the almighty AC...even though the first non-Florida transborder route from YOW on AC wasn't until the CRJ arrived at around the time of Open Skies. Ah good times. AC's first ever CRJ route was YOW-EWR.

Weren't the YHZ nonstops taken out of the schedule a couple months ago?

YYJ getting a new air traffic control tower by 2026.

The current tower dates back to 1958, and I believe has line of sight issues with a new taxiway they built.

Quote:

Today NAV CANADA announced its plans to construct a new air traffic control tower at the Victoria International Airport (YYJ).

Construction of the new tower will begin in the spring of 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2026, replacing the existing tower at the Victoria airport.

The new energy efficient LEED certified tower will include a control cab with a 360-degree view of the airport and have the most modern air traffic management, communications, and aviation surveillance systems to ensure safety of operations.

With a height of six stories and a total floor space of approximately 969m2, the new structure will stand several metres taller than the current tower, providing air traffic controllers with improved sight lines over the airfield.

“While the new tower will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology to safely and efficiently manage growing air traffic demand, it will also be LEED certified, which is an investment in energy efficiency and sustainability and demonstrates NAV CANADA’s commitment to its net-zero goal by 2050,” said Raymond G. Bohn, President and CEO, NAV CANADA.

“We congratulate NAV CANADA, and we are pleased to see this new state of the art control tower being constructed at Victoria International Airport. Aviation is a critical industry for economic prosperity and this project will help facilitate continued growth in the region,” said Geoff Dickson, President and CEO, Victoria International Airport.

NAV CANADA’s decision to replace the existing tower, built in 1958, was based on the need for an upgraded facility to better support airport and aircraft operations and future years of continued uninterrupted service in the area.

Employees of NAV CANADA will continue to work at the existing facility until construction is finalized, at which point air traffic control operations will transition to the new tower.

WS applied and obtained 3x weekly slots to serve YYC-DXB in S23. This marks the first time an actual destination was listed in the report, so wonder if this means it may actually happen.

If they do go ahead it would be a great way to capture some of that leisure and VFR traffic to South Asia. It seems like a route that would also work year round.

3x weekly would be a good way of testing the waters. It would require 1 787 frame (I think?) and could see what demand is from YYC. It'll probably be heavy on VFR traffic, so daily frequency isn't a huge concern. It will be frequent enough that one would shift their vacation time by a day or two on each side for the more direct route.

Yep & looks like Canada Jetlines plans to add a 2nd US flight ✈️ route from Toronto YYZ- US also in early 2023.

CANADA JETLINES SCHEDULES MELBOURNE FL LAUNCH IN JAN 2023

Canada Jetlines yesterday (10NOV22) announced its second US route launch, where it’ll be offering Toronto – Melbourne FL route. The airline’s Airbus A320 aircraft will operate this route once weekly, starting 19JAN23.

Interesting, hopefully it does happen. As it will be good for Calgary YYC & Western Canada.

Do they have a partner in Dubai they could use to connect to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh?
Could it be EK with their partnership with Air Canada?

Westjet still codeshares with Emirates. That gives passengers a pretty extensive choice of connecting routes for much of the Middle East/South Asia.

It's partly why AC conveniently 'forgot' about its tiff with the Middle East 3 (Emirates/Qatar/Etihad) airlines a few years back and got into a partnership with Emirates. The advantage of a connecting partner there is increasing by the day.

Ah makes sense! Well this hopefully goes forward, Western Canada should definitely have a ME connection.

I had last looked just over a week ago and they were still there then. Only YHZ-LGW had been pulled a while back. Now DUB, GLA & CDG are gone too.

This past summer YHZ had a ridiculous amount of transatlantic capacity, even more than pre-pandemic, so it's hardly surprising that something had to give.

YHZ are still in pretty damn good shape for Europe service with DE to FRA, LH flanker brand Eurowings to FRA and AC to LHR.

thewave46 Nov 12, 2022 1:07 AM

Transatlantic is a labour intensive operation relative to intra-continent. You burn up lots of crew time and then have to place them at a hotel for crew rest, not having them back at their own home. The shortest flights are 6 hour affairs, minimum.

Unless one is cleaning up on fares and it doesn’t sound like Westjet was, being short staffed and using limited crew time on a handful of summer Europe flights are probably the less profitable option versus cashing in on domestic summer peak time.

That's a good point. Based on the slot allocation at EDI it indicated WS wants to increase YYZ-EDI service. Maybe they'll concentrate the 2-3 daily flights at YYZ then, if they keep those flights at all.

The Pivot Airlines crew are finally being set free. It’s all over the news. At long last!

Thank goodness! It makes me think twice about working a flight or taking a vacation into the DR ever again!
