It looks like the recession never really affected Idaho's growth other than slowing it down a bit. I am getting used to the slow pace of growth but I would have no problem going back to the pre recession growth either.

sure seems like Boise's population growth has slowed dramatically over the last 15 years. I wonder if that's because most of the growth has been in the suburbs, or if there's not much room left within the Boise city limits, but the amount of construction in the city (especially Harris Ranch and downtown) seems to suggest that Boise is still growing.

personally, i'd like to see boise do some serious annexing and extend the city limits to areas that are prime for growth, such as the land between the micron plant and the canyon. |
Thanks Cottonwood for the thread rename.

Was checking out CSA population numbers on the Wiki- looks like Boise is at 770k while Spokane-CDA is at 710k. Wonder how that works our density wise since Boise’s CSA stretches 100 miles versus Spokane’s 35 or so.
|
Quote:
The Boise CSA (Ada, Boise, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, and Payette Counties in ID, and Malhuer County in OR) covers 22,173 square miles, and has a population density of 34 people per sq/mi. What makes the Boise CSA seem so sparse compared to the Spokane CSA is the inclusion of Owyhee and Malhuer counties. While these two counties add 17,626 square miles, and by themselves are 2.5 times the area of the Spokane CSA, they add fewer than 43,000 people. In other words, Owyhee and Malhuer counties make up over 79% of the land area of the Boise CSA, but only contain 5% of the population. Hence the much lower population density of the Boise CSA. |

Link to Data:
https://www.census.gov/programs-surv...data-sets.html Also I don't recall Twin Falls being classified as a "metro" previous to these listings. Unless I'm mistaken, it appears they have just been upgraded from a "micro" to "metro" area. The 2017 table does not list Twin Falls which appears to confirm this. Other interesting info: Idaho's population is now at 1,754,208. If present trends continue, Idaho will surpass West Virginia (currently 1,805,832 and falling) in total population by 2020 and is quickly approaching Nebraska and New Mexico. All three of the those states have 5 electoral votes in the Electoral College and three congressional districts. They may simply drop WV's elector and give it to a different state (such as TX) but it's clear that Idaho is quickly approaching the population required to receive an additional congressional district and elector. |
Just checked on the Spokane metro too, so looks like consolidated CDA-Spokane (Kootenai and Spokane counties respectively) stand at 734,998. Wonder where they're at as of now.
Edit: I see Jimthemanincda already had updated his sig to show that. I think that puts the area at give or take 150,000 more people than when I left to move to Seattle. Fun to see it grow. |

I'm surprised the city manager for Twin Falls doesn't understand that a metro area is not only based on the central city reaching a population of 50,000 but also the designated urbanized area reaching a population threshold of 100,000 (in this case Twin Falls and Jerome counties). Per census.gov: "Metropolitan Statistical Areas An MSA consists of one or more counties that contain a city of 50,000 or more inhabitants, or contain a Census Bureau-defined urbanized area (UA) and have a total population of at least 100,000 (75,000 in New England). Counties containing the principal concentration of population—the largest city and surrounding densely settled area—are components of the MSA." https://www2.census.gov/geo/pdfs/ref...M/Ch13GARM.pdf |
