Thanks for the reminder, Bristolian. I remember watching the wig wag video, but I'd forgotten it was at the Crenshaw Lumber Co.

The title of this Julius Shulman photoset is "Job 2544: Statler Hotel, public area, 1958". There's no other information, so I'm assuming it's the Statler Hotel in Los Angeles. The first picture appears to show quite a small room.

The 1929 CD (the first I checked) lists the California Store Fixture Co Inc at 763 S Los Angeles Street. The building is still there.

Thanks for locating it Hoss.

I really like this amateur snapshot (taken by a fan?) of a disheveled Joan Blondell with an unidentified man.

Does anyone recognize the gentleman at the wheel of this convertible?

The Statler seems like they went first class...That's a RCA Color set..I had one that i foolishly tossed because i didn't know at the time you could have the crt rebuilt. These sets are hard to come by and they also had remote controls that are even rarer than the sets.

We've seen numerous images of China City, but I'm pretty sure we haven't seen this particular image for NLA.

As a reminder, here's one of the earlier images of China City. (this one showing 'Dragon Road')

Earlier on NLA, we discussed the two hotels across the street from China City (in the distance in the above image)
If I remember correctly, the one on the left is the Sunset Hotel and the one on the right is the San Fernando Hotel.

Here's a better view of the two hotels [below]

That's definitely George Barnes in the picture with Blondell. He was a top cinematographer whose credits include REBECCA, JANE EYRE, SPELLBOUND and WAR OF THE WORLDS.

ethereal_reality Aug 10, 2016 10:16 PM

Good to know Blaster. Rebecca is one of my favorite movies.

hmmmm.......6048...if the building had multiple tenants the photographer might have been located in the same building.

It's difficult to locate on gsv because I believe we're looking at the back of the building.

It's difficult to locate on gsv because we're looking at the back of the building.

Rocket Messenger Service appears at 6048 Hollywood Boulevard in the CDs throughout the 1960s. I think the picture above is looking south, because Carlton Way is lined with palms. With that in mind, I've arrowed what I think is the most likely building on the 1964 aerial below on the left. It looks like there was something in the parking lot area in the view below, but everything else seems about right. The building had gone by the time the 1972 aerial (below, right) was taken, so there's not much point looking on GSV (other than to see the palm trees on Carlton Way).

The company still appears to be in business. Their website says they have been "Serving the entire Los Angeles County and surrounding areas since 1944". Four phone numbers are listed, including one on Hollywood, but there are no addresses. Apparently, "It's Not Rocket Science...It's Rocket Messenger".

I happened upon these two slides a while back on eBay.

I found the locations of the first one, but the second one remains a 'mystery' location.

Slide #2

Since the slides were paired, there's a good possibility they were both taken in the same general area.

-note the interesting building on the left with the liquor store. -it appears to be triangular....maybe.

If you look closely, there's a bakery in the building as well.

Color me embarrassed :(. I initially thought the gas prices were 3.19 dollars !

I just looked it up and gas during the 1973/74 oil embargo peaked at 55 cents a gallon.

Cherokee Super Service, 1958.

I looked through a few city directories & found all kinds of 'Cherokee' (as in Cherokee Street and the Hollywood Cherokee Building) but no 'Cherokee Super Service'.

The telephone number on the tow truck door begins with HO, which is the prefix for Hollywood, right?

ethereal_reality Aug 11, 2016 7:23 PM

I also found this 1932 of a wrecked car that was taken at the "Cherokee Garage".

I wonder if this was the same place, but many years earlier.

I found Cherokee Super Service at 1610 N Cherokee Avenue in the 1960 CD. I only found it because I searched for Hills U Drive (see left of picture above).

1130 Westchester Place

Yet another interesting Westchester Place house is #1130... the Judson Rives house at the ne corner of 12th Street. It is not only next door to Rosenheim's house--it was designed by him. Sam Watters's book Houses of Los Angeles 1885-1919 has some great early shots unobstructed by vegetation. The nuns who once occupied Rosenheim's house also owned this one.... The shot above is not clear, though interesting in that it almost looks like a painting--anyway, it's the best shot I could find. Current Google views reveal almost nothing of the house behind the jungle.

The view from the street hasn't changed much since GW's December 2011 post; this is the best I could find:

But if we travel back to the January 1918 edition of The Architect and Engineer of California, we get a much better view of
Judson Rives' six-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 1130 Westchester Place (Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #661):

Judson C. Rives died on Saturday, November 16, 1940:

1130 Westchester Place is just to the right of bottom center in this 1948 aerial view:

Historic Aerials

The Sisters of Social Service, who occupied 1120 Westchester Place next door, took over 1130 in 1946. This article says they
were willed the "Reeves" mansion. In 1954 they built a structure on the south side of the grounds, along 12th Street:

http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...b.jpg~original

Perhaps at some point the sisters took additional security measures as well:

We can see what was built in 1954 in this 2016 GoogleEarth view; again, 1130 is just to the right of bottom center:

1130 Westchester Place was sold in 1999 and today seems to be the home of The Descartes Institute. Below, along the bottom,
1120 Westchester Place is on the left, and 1130 is on the right.
