Halifax Crane Talk

Cranes are a common sight around town, tower cranes are often used to gauge the current development climate, and mobile cranes typically carry out shorter duration but interesting tasks.

This thread can be a dumping ground of photos to discussion that don't necessarily fit in other sections, and may just turn into me talking to myself!

To kick things off, by my count we have 16 tower cranes up in HRM.

On the mobile crane front, AW Leil had 2 of their mobile cranes installing a mast at the Citadel the last few days which was quite a sight:

FWIW, I occasionally post Crane/Truck/heavy equipment porn over at http://heavyequip.tumblr.com/

Spotted this guy out near Lunenburg a few years ago.

I saw those on your Flickr feed, I was hoping you'd share them here.

Depending on how in depth we want to get, the crane on the left is new to the AW Leil fleet, its a 400 US-ton Demag AC 350-6. AW Leil was purchased a couple of years by an investment firm, Seafort Capital, headed up by members of the Sobey and McCain families. Since then they have sold off older stock and purchased new cranes.

The other sites that have tower cranes are;

The Keep
I.D.E.A. @ Dalhousie
South & Hollis
321 Amesbury Gate (West Bedford)
303 Washmill Lake Drive
Dutch Village & Andrew
The Pavilion
The Curve
The Doyle
One Ninety Two (Rockingham South)

I'm counting 14 plus a couple of suburban projects that likely have cranes as well. :)

I went through my old pics and here are a few of my fav crane pics from the past 5 or so years around the city.

My all time fav is still the kangaroo crane that built the TD tower addition.

Harbour Foundations runs that crane, they are relatively new to the large scale formwork business. I've seen them doing homes for years, but since the Avery they seem to have had steady business.

All Canada Crane is a newcomer to Atlantic Canada, but is a large North American outfit. Most of their cranes carry the "ALL" or maybe "ALL Canada" branding. They seem like they are here to stay with the one below branded with Halifax. They have gradually been building their local fleet, probably bringing in cranes as the jobs require them and taking on some of the work normally handled by Irving Equipment or AW Leil. They had a large crawler participating on the Halifax side of the Big Lift.
