Houston took a breather early in 2013, then accelerated at the end of the year. Most of the announcements from last summer and fall are only now starting construction in Q1/Q2, so I expect the dollar value has only increased. More to come.

The project will be the first of many changes planned for the 17-acre property, which was developed 15 years ago as a series of low-slung retail buildings surrounded by surface parking.

Earlier this year, owner AmREIT announced plans to redevelop the site into a much higher density development with housing, hotel rooms and office space valued at around $1.2 billion. The Houston-based real estate company has identified seven potential development sites in Uptown Park and plans to add significantly to the existing 169,000 square feet of retail space.

The agreement is “the beginning of what could be a transformation of our Uptown Park property to one of the finest mixed use communities in Houston,” AmREIT’s chairman and CEO Kerr Taylor said in a news release discussing the company’s first-quarter earnings.

The new building, Crimson at Uptown Park, will be developed on the northwest corner of the property where the stores Baker, Pelucha Decor and Bella Rinova are now.

true but the one in Austin is a floor shorter and a different roof design. id guess the Houston one is around 280'. still, shorter than the 320' guestimate.

as someone else mentioned, it was Culberson who blocked the federal funding, and thus halted the university and uptown rail lines. fortunately uptown is moving ahead with a BRT line, with local TIRZ(?) money, for the time being that can be converted in the future to light rail.

Nice vid of The Woodlands!

That vid blew me away. It hasn't been that long since I drove through there, but I wasn't expecting quite so many mid and highrises.

citykid09 Apr 30, 2014 1:04 AM

Has anyone seen the spot lately where the big apartments that were under construction burned completely down? Do you all think that they will rebuild?

toxteth o'grady Apr 30, 2014 2:37 AM

If they don't rebuild, they spent a whole lot of money for nothing. But who knows? They might take the insurance settlement and run. Then someone else can put up a building that's not all wood and flammable.

Urbannizer Apr 30, 2014 2:47 AM

Hopefully they bring something with a more interesting design to the boards it they do decide to rebuild.

Great selling tool. And it didn't even include the Hackett Tower.

cloud713 Apr 30, 2014 6:05 AM

Right? The woodlands has changed quite a bit even since this video 2 years ago.. Along with Hackett tower they didn't show any of the new developments on Lake Woodlands, nor do I believe they included 20 Waterway Square, or w/e that new office highrise is supposed to be on the south side of the canal.

Urbannizer Apr 30, 2014 12:21 PM

The video didn't show those projects because it's from 2012. Here's the 2014 version that includes Hackett Tower, 10 Waterway Ave and Hughes Landing.

Who else thinks that The Woodlands is become to Houston what Bellevue, WA is to Seattle? The Woodlands has a little ways to go as far as building up its downtown and its population, but I think its getting there. I can't wait until that 20+ story condo/apartment highrise starts construction....if ever. They have been talking about that one for years now.

I agree. Even the architecture looks pretty similar. The difference is that it looks like the Woodlands is just developing along its waterway.

Looking at the video somebody posted on HAIF, the condo tower, even though 20 something stories, won't be a stand out like any of the Anadarko buildings. I think the next big impact on the Woodlands skyline will be Anadarko lll which will be approx. 600,000 sq. ft and 30-ish stories (if the other towers are any indication of the third).

Can't stand those people. Build! Build! Build!

Here is my contribution (thanks for all the updates, Urbannizer);

I have been working on some sketch up for the past several weeks and made a rough 3D rendering of downtown with all of the proposed and u/c high rises showing.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3...g?t=1398982422

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3...g?t=1398982414

I left out several of the infill buildings where there is already a 3D building there on Google earth. So no Capitol Tower and 1111 Travis Street.

Dariusb May 1, 2014 10:33 PM

Downtown is the one area in Houston that I am really excited about. Hopefully once these projects are complete it will feel like a real urban environment.

Capital Tower is missing as well in the last pic.

toxteth o'grady May 2, 2014 5:13 PM

Meanwhile, GooglEarth has updated its imagery in the metro area of Houston to February 2014, which means the aerials are very fresh. However the area updated is pretty much the same footprint as the images from October 2013, so no photos showing the completion of the northwest segment of the Grand Parkway. But the south side of Terminal B at IAH is shown completed, which is good.

FMC breaks ground in Generation Park:
Quote:

FMC Technologies Inc. (NYSE: FTI) broke ground on its new campus at Generation Park on May 2.

The Houston-based oil and gas equipment company bought 173 acres at the business park, off the northeast corner of Beltway 8, in late 2012. When it bought the land, the company said it would provide “flexibility and options as it assesses its future needs in the Houston area."

Within the next 10 years, FMC plans to consolidate all of its 10 Houston facilities — including its corporate headquarters — into the campus.

"We believe there is value in bringing all our Houston employees together on a single campus built for our specific business requirements. Creating a unified space that recognizes the changing needs of our expanding workforce and encourages communication and collaboration will make us a better company," John Gremp, chairman, president and CEO of FMC Technologies, said in a statement May 2. "We are excited about what the future holds for us."

Employees will move to the new campus in phases, starting with the western subsea services operations. Those operations will occupy 70 acres and more than 1 million square feet of office and workshop space.

The Houston development map looks pretty great and I like your product. I view it for updates nearly every day. Makes it easier for me, I don't need a spreadsheet anymore to keep up with Houston developments.

The only things I see missing are Research Forest Lakeside, on the opposite side of the lake from Hughes Landing and the new International Terminal at Hobby International Airport.

By the way, why is there a crane up at Hobby? Just for the terminal or is something else going in too? I just used it about a month and a half ago. Very user friendly airport but the area around it could use some development too one day.

I live blocks away from the airport and I see the cranes everyday. The reason why they are there is because they're expanding for their international flights

should the houston airport officials vs city government, achieves the go ahead, to construct the new international terminal building to scale, as per the newest renditions put forth.. this city shall indeed, become the full fledged world class city that we all dream of.

those new renderings, are simply spectacular. i have had the pleasure of traveling throughout the world, as per my work related ventures. i can honestly assure anyone, that if they construct it to that particular scale / design.. the masses shall indeed arrive. trust upon this!

toxteth o'grady May 3, 2014 10:17 PM

They have yet to hire the PM for the international terminal expansion at IAH, but the master plan for the terminal looks fairly well thought out, though it will probably need some tweaks. My only concern is making sure United doesn't create problems for HAS.

This one should go back from on-hold to under-construction.

Ashby Highrise:
Quote:

A SPOKESPERSON for Buckhead Investment Partners, the developers behind the building slated for 1717 Bissonnet St. in Boulevard Oaks known as the Ashby Highrise, tells Swamplot that they now “plan to move forward with construction as soon as possible,” on the 21-story apartment tower — “without delay.” Yesterday, Judge Randy Wilson rejected a request from neighbors of the project to issue a permanent injunction that would have barred its construction. In a press release issued yesterday, Buckhead said it planned to appeal the judge’s ruling that the developers must pay 20 neighbors the approximately $1.2 million a jury decided would compensate them for their loss of market value.
