This is an article from the Tribune talking about some of the potential economic benefit Utah could have while the airport is under construction for the next 10 years...If it pans out like this is saying that would be great for the local economy over the next while....and that's only what the airport is going to contribute to the economy not the other development that is going to happen

I actually think the renderings look pretty good. I really like the interior spaces and materials. However, I do have some pretty big qualms about this design. First of all, why are we using the orange concrete stuff again in northern Utah??!! This isn't southern Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, or even SoCal! Also, the firm that is designing this, Edwards & Daniels, is the same firm that designed the latest Salt Palace expansion with orange concrete.:yuck: Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but it is the detailing and follow through that they have demonstrated to lack in sometimes. The prime example is how the new Salt Palace expansion fronts South Temple. And, how in the world does orange concrete relate to the rest of the Salt Palace and surroundings?! Not at all.

You've triggered my hate for orange concrete!!!!

Yay, now I know who to kill.

EDIT : never mind, I looked through EDA's work and I realized that a. The salt palace expansion is my least favorite work of theirs, and b. they do amazing work with some architectural value (as in it deviates away from the typical modern style with angled roofs and metallic panelling). I hope they reconsider for a colder and more calm color pallet as opposed to the hot orange concrete they keep picking.

I wouldn't be to worried. Maybe those of us who have any power could send a letter asking to make a design reconsideration?

HOK is the lead designer. while I am sure the local architects provide input, I'm not sure how much influence they have on the design.
There were 3 local architects selected to assist, 1 for the terminal, 1 for the concourses, and 1 for the parking garage

My first impression was the color was copper... but as I look there are parts that must be concrete, and I hope it doesn't end up being bright orange. I get that Utah has a strong desert/Native American heritage, but why does EVERYTHING we present to the world have to revolve around that? It's so cliché and boring!

Damn. Well, my dad always told me when I was growing up that 8 city blocks in SLC equaled one mile. I don't know if that's true, but that's a lot of moving walkways in that terminal and parking space.

The forthcoming expansion of the Salt Lake International Airport, one of the largest public works projects in Utah history, will have a sizable impact on the efficiency of domestic and international air travel. It will also elevate the stature of the community it serves in a way that will pay dividends for decades to come.

The dimensions of the project are impressive. At $1.8 billion, the cost is comparable to that of the giant rebuilding of I-15 through the Salt Lake Valley, which cost $1.5 billion in 2001 dollars. It will cost more than the sprawling National Security Agency complex in Bluffdale, and carries a price tag slightly higher than the total amount of money the state spends annually on all transportation construction and operations...

...It’s important to note that Salt Lake International is already one of the country’s best airports. It ranks 94th among the world’s top 100 airports, and is one of only 15 American airports on that list. It is currently ranked as the most efficient airport in the U.S. as measured by the percentage of on-time arrivals and departures. It is the 21st busiest airport in the country, even though the Salt Lake metropolitan area ranks 35 in population.

The new airport will be even busier, more efficient and in terms of aesthetics, a sleeker, grander and more welcoming threshold for the millions of visitors who pass through its gates. For many, it will deliver their first impression of Utah, and architectural plans suggest that impression will be a good one. The terminals will have glass walls that offer floor-to-ceiling views of the Wasatch range and will incorporate design elements planners say are intended to convey a “sense of place.”...

Delta will fly Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, beginning May 1st, 2015. The flight will be operated with the Boeing 767-300ER.

Rad. I was hoping that flight would show up sometime. Hopefully an Asian flight re-emerges at some point. Would love to see an international carrier at the airport as well, like British Airways to LHR or something.

All these international flights that are coming available is awesome.

I could have used that direct flight to Mexico City last fall on my way to Peru. I had an awful layover at LAX.

SLC is growing nicely with these international destinations combined with the new airport.

Have any of you been out to the airport lately? There has been a ton of earth/dirt moving with tons of backhoes ( at least 10 or so ) digging the area up. This is the field south of the long term parking as you first enter the airport. This redevelopment is in full swing.

Frontier starting flights to Chicago and Phoenix and American is starting a flight to Miami

Last time I flew Spirit I was in the luggage hold. Cold, but not as uncomfortable as you'd think.

About the city blocks, a bunch of 660 foot blocks do equal a mile, like west valley which has 5280 foot blocks but downtown you have to add 132 BC of the street (our streets are 132 feet, right?) widths so 8 city blocks is larger.

Right now there's at least three cranes just south of the Dollar car rental lot right where the long term parking is. The old overflow dirt lot is now a new parking lot and parts of the long term parking lots are getting torn up to make way for, I believe, future car rental lots.

Ok, so when I look at the map that shows both today's and future's airport I get a much better idea of what going on in the area where I saw the three cranes ( today's theres four ) Those cranes are right where the future QTR will be. Quick Turn Around looks to be a two story parking garage that will store the rent a cars that can be turned back around in a hurry. Right now, these four cranes that are just south of the car rental lots look to be drilling into the ground for maybe the footings? It's fun to guess. Starting to see a lot of action here.

So, by a strange string of events I somehow found myself up on the fourth level of the Salt Lake Airport's parking garage. For an hour. Here is what I saw:

Off topic I know but just FYI, I've seen a number of Teslas in Utah. My boss owns one in fact and I got to drive it last summer. When he bought it, Tesla told him that there were about 160 Teslas in Utah.

I have yet to notice a Tesla in Utah. The only place I have seen them is Labor Day weekend 2013, while I was in Portland. I was going to the Washington Terrace Mall in Tigerd and noticed in the parking garage that there was a charging station inside the garage and had at least 3 cars and one was a roadster. Thought it was cool. If I could afford one I would get one myself.

I see Teslas almost every day in Draper/Riverton. Mostly in Riverton.

I was going to say the same thing. I see one quite often on 12300 south between Riverton and Draper. Never see it at the maverik though. Not sure why.

I have also seen two different Teslas parked on 25th Street here in Ogden on two separate occasions. I wish they would get charging stations along the Wasatch Front and not just in Central/Southern Utah. I know they are geared more toward those traveling cross country which is why they are placed where they are but I still think at least on the I-80 corridor they would be justified and a little less so, but still, along I-15.

Was at the airport yesterday. Definitely a lot going on out in the parking lots. Random question, does anyone know who has gate B1 at the airport? I know jetBlue used to have it but they are now at gate A4 in between Frontier and the three Alaska gates to the east of them. Thanks.

I flew out of B2 two weeks ago and it looked like it was all SkyWest plains from B1 to B10ish or Delta, whatever floats your boat.

Parked right next to a Tesla at the Spurs game the other day. The was another Tesla on the next row as well.

I haven't seen Tesla since the 80's...

I mean, it's cool and I like it, but what is its purpose, and will they really include it in the final design? It seems like a really cool place to watch planes from.

My guess is that it will access the lounges, like the Delta Sky Club.

So I have a question...years ago, before the airport TRAX line was completed, weren't there some plans that showed two TRAX stations at the airport? One that dropped off at the terminal, and one that stopped in Economy Parking somewhere? If so, I take it that is no longer the plan?

Additionally, with the designs currently as they are, what happens when the 5600 West TRAX line is built and connects with the airport? I always imagined that TRAX would kind of do a loop through the airport, like the access roads do, stopping at the terminal, continuing west, make a stop in economy parking, and exit back out of the airport head further west to meet up with 5600.

But from the renderings, it looks like there wouldn't be any opportunity to extend the tracks past their terminus at the terminal. So for the 5600 West line to connect to the airport, the trains would have to make a dead stop at the terminal, and then change directions to leave the airport sharing the same track that trains bound for Downtown use, and then final split again to head west out closer to the freeway?

Anyone wanna shed more light on this?

That walkway thingy could be for an airport lounge or possibly a walkway for international travelers only to get to customs.

Also, I like having dedicated upper and lower level for departures and arrivals, but man, it seems that there is not much real estate for people to enter the main terminal. For a large airport with many gates, it seems that it will packed in the departure airline area outside the terminal.

Ooh, I bet that's it Wrendog, customs sort of thing. I was hoping it wasn't a lounge because I never qualify for those sorts of perks. :( But a sort of passage-way to an extra customs check makes sense.

I've been to airports where they thread new arrivals through different hallways before passing through another security check. I think that happens when you have a connection on international trips or something.

And I don't mean to be picky or anything, but I do like to spot the slight problems in renderings...

Does anyone know how JetBlue's SLC-MCO flight is doing? I also noticed that Alaska is down to three gates and that JetBlue took gate A4, which was Alaska's.
