Yeah 4 levels of above ground parking are bad from a visual standpoint, but couldn't their be a way to compromise and mitigate that by wrapping it with retail or apartments? Rather than outright chase these developers out of town with strict aesthetic guidelines?

I'm not saying things shouldn't be pretty, or that ground level retail shouldn't be promoted (although one could make the case that another block of empty store fronts is irritating enough because gawd knows a laundry mat, coffee shop or dry cleaners isn't going to be able to afford that rent...) but I am saying that we should maybe be a little more realistic about costs and benefits. Do we want an active and affordable downtown or do we want a upper-income bracket bedroom community of second and third home retirees?

Just saying. :/

The PDO requires above grade parking to encapsulated by program... especially on a full block development. No one is asking these developers to do anything out of the ordinary - go to some degree of architectural perfection. They're asking for 10 deviations from the PDO and every deviation is to be looked at on a case by case basis. The idea of asking for deviations is that they would be granted when a resulted project would be of an exceptional caliber and better than if they followed the PDO in the first place. This is not that case. This is a case of a suburban land developer not knowing how to do urban architecture.

Finally, the Old Police Headquarters is seeing action again. It should be finished in October 2013!!! I have been waiting on this project since I moved into the neighborhood 4 years ago. It obviously still remains to be seen if it becomes just another tourist trap or can find a way to cater to the growing local base like me :)

The line is proposed to extend from Smart Corner to Zoo Dr. I'm curious why the line doesn't continue to University and Park. That isn't too much farther, and would add serious ridership. Maybe that will happen as a next step?

Agree with you 100%.

I have always thought a light rail line from downtown to university/park along park is needed.

If they extend to the zoo and no further it would be pathetic!!

It looks as though it will only extend to the zoo for now, with plans to continue up to University, then loop back around through Banker's Hill to downtown.

I wasn't really paying attention to the mayor race cuz I think both guys sucked donkey kong.

Anyways, what are Filner's stances on...everything?

Dale Nov 9, 2012 5:05 AM

^ And how does Filner impact the Chargers ? Downtown development ?

I'm not sure, but I met DeMaio 4 years ago in my senior year of high school and I couldn't stand him. I can't remember the specifics, but he talked about his plans to cut wasteful spending on things like mass transit and urban development, so I'd say Filner was the better choice for San Diego.

I'm pretty sure DeMaio was completely against a new stadium. I'm not sure about Filner though.

This quote from this article gives me hope for Filner's mayoralty.

This city has changed demographically. It has changed business-wise. It has changed with the kind of people and the way they look at the world. They want a liveable, bikeable, walkable city. But the political structure has not kept up.
I'm not sure what Filner's plans for making this happen are, or if he has the willingness to fight the NIMBYs and other opponents of change, but I can guarantee he will be a far better mayor for sustainable development and urban policy than DeMaio. I also read elsewhere that Filner is going to champion a BRT system, but again there are no announced plans.

I still am a little disappointed in San Diego that this election was more about pensions and unions rather than the future of this city (with very little said by the candidates regarding transportation and land use), and how the city is going to be able to make the necessary changes to bring San Diego into the 21st century.

Yeah, you're right. On the other hand, if someone stated they were for density, transit, etc, the NIMBY's would have tried to shut them down.

Haha, Right? Just like the Cortez Blu...I mean, what's the point of naming a tower Blue if it has no Blue in it?

Other than that, I think it's a great project that will add some density to the core. 800 units..that's bigger than Vantage Pointe!

Port approves bridge lighting plan, $8 million sought to make the bridge glow by 2015

The San Diego-Coronado Bridge would glow throughout San Diego Bay under a funding plan approved Tuesday by the San Diego Unified Port District.

"You will be able to see this bridge from all five of the member cities," said port commissioner Lee Burdick. "There will be incredible vista views."

However, there's one hangup: money.

The project, as designed by British artist Peter Fink's team, is estimated to cost between $6 million and $8 million and the port only set aside $75,000 to mount a fund-raising drive.
