I was under the impression that Memorial Park was largely destroyed by the 2011 drought, but at least from the pic, it looks like there are still a lot of trees. I haven't driven through the park since the drought.

Wait, Houston experienced a drought?? I always thought it was wet and humid. I thought that's why it was always so green when I would visit. The new museum looks incredible, cant wait to visit.

Southeast Texas experienced a pretty bad drought in the early 2010s. Memorial Park was particularly hit hard.

Houston lost about fifty million trees in the 2011 drought and about 15-20% of Memorial Park was impacted. They did replant some trees since then though.

2011. Same drought that destroyed huge swaths of forest around Bastrop.

Somehow I missed that rendering on HAIF. That is a bigger development that I thought. It's almost more of a high rise than a mid rise, not sure what the official cut-off is to be called one or the other. It's going to definitely stand out as a tall building. Also there is starting to be some serious density in that immediate area. Assuming COVID doesn't cause cities to be emptied out forever or some other doomsday scenario, I suspect that one day Midtown could leap over West Campus in Austin to become the most urban in Texas, IMO.

Houston OKs plan to let downtown bars, restaurants along Main to serve food and drinks in the street

City Council on Wednesday approved, after some delay, plans for the More Space Main Street program which would close the road to automobiles and allow bars and restaurants to create outdoor seating spaces in the street.

If all goes well, revelers willing to head out could celebrate some Christmas cheer on the road.

The program, which city officials approved as a pilot until March 2022, includes possibly closing Main downtown from Commerce to Rusk, depending on which businesses seek to participate. Rules and regulations for the areas bars and restaurants could carve out on the street are being developed by officials across several city departments, including planning, public works, police, fire and the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.

Sort of creating a mini 6th St, like Austin, where they shut down the road to allow more pedestrian use. Hopefully they can get this rolled out sooner than later, downtown houston was blowing up. Appears to be about 6 blocks...

The company, which has developed more than 60,000 apartment units across the U.S. over the last four decades, and financial partner Houston-based Lionstone Investments today unveiled an urban village called Autry Park at the gateway to the River Oaks and Montrose neighborhoods. The project, which pulls from the natural landscape of Buffalo Bayou Park and will serve as an amenity for park goers, will bring apartment buildings, restaurants, shops and retail services to the site.

“We anticipate the desire to live across the street from one of Houston’s most treasured park spaces in the middle of a vibrant retail development adjacent to some of Houston’s best neighborhoods is going to be something greatly desired by renters and retailers,” said David Ott, development partner for Texas at Hanover Co.

Autry Park, named for the small city park it surrounds, will consist of five towers totalling 1,450 residential units, 350,000 square feet of office space and 100,000 square feet of retail space and a hospitality component. Phase 1, which broke ground at the end of 2019, will bring two multifamily and retail buildings totaling 750 units and 50,000 square feet of retail space amid a winding network of streets and sidewalks shaded by mature oaks.

Whatever Phase I is, it won't be small... It will be over half of the full site which is 84.55 acres.

Developers behind a 14-acre mixed-use project overlooking Houston's Buffalo Bayou Park are betting on a boutique, sustainable office design to gain a competitive edge to attract tenants in a tough leasing environment.

The office project is part of Autry Park, the newly named mixed-use project being developed by Hanover Co. and Lionstone Investments.

At full build-out, the project is expected to include 1,400 apartments, 350,000 square feet of office space and 100,000 square feet of retail space near Allen Parkway at the corner of West Dallas Street and the future Buffalo Park Drive.

Local Partners is developing the office portion of the project and plans to include two office buildings: one 20-story building built with traditional concrete and one six- or seven-story building built with cross-laminated timber.

The mid-rise office building with cross-laminated timber for the floor and ceiling decks in combination with a steel frame is the first publicly proposed cross-laminated timber office project in Houston. Another unrelated timber project, involving apartments, was announced earlier in the city.

However, it is "very likely other developers are considering this technology" in the city as the nascent building technique gains traction, said Shon Link, managing partner at Local Partners. Link previously worked at the Houston real estate firm Midway before breaking off to form his own development firm two years ago.

Former Halliburton campus to be demolished to make way for 50-acre mixed-use development

My Dad did as well, at the same time. He also worked at the Clinton Dr campus. Then, he moved to London and Cairo for about 4 years to work on projects there.

I don’t have any family connections to it(well my great grandmother was a member of the Root family :) ). I do remember as a small child in the early 90s staring out the car window on the beltway that behemoth being out in the middle of nowhere though. It and Auchans and the silvery NOV tower.

It’s fascinating how that part of the city only took 30 years to go through a complete cycle of brand new suburbia to decay to revitalization.

Lots of competition in that area, but location location location. Hard to believe that area on the east side of BW8 between Westheimer and Richmond is still just an apartment complex surrounded by open fields.

It’s unclear how many employees the move will affect, though the company said no layoffs will be with the move.

HPE will keep the San Jose campus, and will consolidate some of its Bay Area sites there, it said.
