Are there any pictures of what The Edge looked like when it was in operation. I haven't found any.

Gilamonster Mar 15, 2011 4:11 AM

There didn't appear to be any demolition from my view across the river. However, it's quite obvious that the demolition will progress from Wyoming st inward toward the hillside, so maybe I simply couldn't see any action. Unfortunately, I had to head north today after work, instead of my usual trip home on the trolley and therefore wasn't able to get a closer look at the site. Maybe tomorrow I'll take a trip up the incline to see the back end of the site to check if demolition has begun.

Gilamonster Mar 15, 2011 4:38 AM

I should have done a little on-line research before my previous post. Demolition has indeed started! The following brief video confirms this and is informative as well.

From my viewpoint across the river, all I was able to notice today were some flashing yellow lights on the site adjacent to the building. I assume they belonged to a vehicle. The work on the building is being done from the inside-out so it is not suprising that after day 2 the building looks basically the same from the outside. I didn't feel like going out in the rain today to take pics but I hope to Wed. or Thur.

Some site grading has already taken place on the lower end where some of the surrounding townhouses will be located:

Wow, I must have been there at the same time you were today. I took pretty much the same pictures.

pj3000 Mar 29, 2011 3:40 AM

Yay! Finally! Demolition of that nasty eyesore!

mattejb Apr 1, 2011 4:29 PM

Looks great, thanks for the photos!

So how much are these condos going to cost?

Gilamonster Apr 10, 2011 4:47 PM

The following pics are from last Tuesday. The building is now gone from the skyline! The heavy equipment clearing the rubble was moving all week, so I'm sure the site is now significantly cleaner than the following pictures show. Ill hopefully have some more pictures early this week if not later today.

Such an amazing site. Pittsburgh's topography adds richness to the dense urban fabric draped over the hills and valleys. Here in flat Tampa, there are no such views even possible. Looking at the demo pic's, I have to give credit to the guys or women who operated the equipment perched on that cliff.

Gilamonster Apr 16, 2011 4:52 PM

All the equipment is gone and we now move to the next stage;waiting! Beemsterboer has said it could take as long as 6 months to get financing in place. He also has said that he expects the process to speed up once the banks/investors see that he has a clean site to build on, which of course he now does. I'll be scouring the internet for updates on the financing progress and any other news related to the project and post it here.

Here's a recent photo of the cleared site:

Four acres of land have been cleared between Wyoming and Sycamore streets off Grandview Avenue on Mt. Washington in preparation for the One Grandview Avenue development.
Keith Hodan | Tribune-Review

This article claims it's to be 25 floors...

It may be a surprise to one day see a 25-story building next to the Mon Incline sloping up from east to west in the shape of a huge white sail. But that's just one thing that guarantees that this hotel and condo project will be a fascinating conversation piece if built as planned.

Besides the sail-shaped tower, plans include a large plaza that will extend the promenade of Grandview Avenue, overlooking the city, another 200 feet beyond the Incline. This will be in line with the existing sidewalk along Grandview's city-side edge. The tower, with 160 hotel rooms and six to eight luxury condos, will sit back about 120 feet from this edge, creating the plaza.

Then, below and around the edges of the plaza's platform, the designers propose about 50 condominiums that will resemble the village-like clusters of turn-of-the century millworker houses that cling to the South Side Slopes. (Thus, with expensive modern condos, will 21st-century Pittsburgh honor its past!)

A bit different than the old. That tubular diagonal bracing has sort of a Richard Rogers thing going on. Is the funicular station house part of the project?

Austinlee Apr 1, 2012 4:04 PM

IF this thing gets built, i predict a sizable scaledown an hopefully a somewhat updated design. This rednering is from a differnt decade. Clean it up; And we may have something to be proud of.

colemonkee Apr 1, 2012 7:50 PM

I actually like this a lot. Are the row houses at the bottom also part of the project?
