Interesting stuff. I like the landscape.

I just looked this up...St. Johns is like 1200 miles to NYC. I never would have guessed. In my mind's eye they are in the same region, which clearly isn't true.

St. Johns is also closer to London than NYC is to LA.

SignalHillHiker Jun 20, 2019 9:58 PM

We're very far East, yeah - closer to Rome than Victoria, British Columbia (Canada's west coast).

mrnyc Jun 21, 2019 4:07 PM

^ that is really wild -- i mean when you think about it and look closely at maps ok -- but otherwise you would never imagine.

SignalHillHiker Jun 21, 2019 4:28 PM

Yeah. It hit hardest visiting Bermuda. Flying east out the States for ages over the open Atlantic Ocean and realizing home was WAY farther east than that :haha:

Quick update... it turned to shit again. :D This picture was taken by a friend TODAY. Literally, TODAY.

Also, VOCM's budget for giveaways is hilarious. These two kids just won some chips and a loaf of a bread. :haha:

Thoroughly enjoyable thread. Though I grew up in Upstate New York, these pics gave me a shiver several times.......Brrrrr.

Thanks for the extended tour and weather report. :D

SignalHillHiker Jun 30, 2019 2:45 PM

AND it's the last of June. A mixed bag, but mostly good in the end. :)

But it was SO nice!

So, in chronological order... :haha:

Started in Rabbittown but didn't take a picture until Georgestown. It's a nice little hipster neighbourhood. It was the city's first suburb back in the day.

Then I cut down to Bannerman, which is one of the more well-to-do neighbourhoods in the core.

Nice pictures!

What's the cheapest airline to St. John's, and where are the cheapest places to fly in from?

SignalHillHiker Jul 3, 2019 7:44 PM

There is no cheap option. You could definitely fly just about anywhere else in the developed world for less. Our direct flight to Dublin was recently re-routed through Halifax, Nova Scotia. We still have a direct flight to London but it's obscenely expensive.

If you can get to any major airport in Canada, you should be able to get a connecting flight to here for less than $1,000. For example, if you wanted to fly from Toronto (our largest city) to St. John's this weekend, it would cost $605 at the cheapest, $1,450 at the most.

What a unique, very charming looking city. I imagine not many Canadians even get around to be tourists there just due to how far removed it is? Stunning nonetheless. I'm truly shocked to learn it's 1200 miles to NYC!

It almost reminds me as if San Francisco and Reykjavik had a baby.

Aww, such a compliment - thank you! :)

We have a modest tourism industry. Its value is not that great, but its local significance, importance, and visibility is huge. People here if you asked them on the street would assume we're one of Canada's most popular tourist destinations, when in reality the actual number is near the bottom.

spictacular mcluvin Jul 3, 2019 11:58 PM

OMG I just fell in love and MUST visit one day.

I love the old charm and colourful homes. Perhaps it's because I am originally from Valparaiso in Chile if you've ever heard of it. It seems to have a similar rough gritty charm to it. Also I've heard Lisbon in Portugal has the same charm to it.

Greetings from Regina, SK.

Fortunately, I'm typing this while sweating to death in one of our hottest early-August days on record. Otherwise, I'd probably not make it through this post.
