Yeah, Barnett will likely have all the say as far as the apartments go, unless those guys are interested in buying.

It's funny, I've already begun thinking of this as the Nordstrom tower in my mind, just to keep it separate from everything else. But here's a proposal from one of Nordstrom's many earlier attempts to build in Manhattan...

That proposal is for the Roosevelt Hotel site.

The government of Pakistan owns the site, and keeps changing its mind on whether or not to sell and redevelop. You could build a huge tower on that site, even without the Midtown East upzoning.

That site has been host to many proposals over the years. One day, something very tall and prominent will rise on that site. It would have been a good site for Nordstrom, though the site they eventually chose seems pretty good too.

Yes, it's in the hot zone, and can be built as large as any of the towers around Grand Central, with some "starchitecture". Look for more on that in the future.

What I find interesting about that store plan is that it's basically the same as is planned for this site...

Indeed, that one is awful. Looks like some failed Liebeskind monstrosity. Though, it will most likely be changed.

That's not what's being built. It's a design from the design competiton by SHoP. It was for a different version of the tower, one that mixed office, hotel, and residential.

That SHoP proposal is lousy. Hopefully something much better will rise. I have low expectations for HdeM's proposal. It'll be another hideous trendy wreck.

Am I the only one who thinks this was an awesome design? I'm shocked. I'm sure, though, that if this lost the competition, the final proposal is probably fantastic. Can't wait to see it.

It could be, though it hasn't been designed yet. Would Gary Barnett push for tallest? Undoubtedly. He's like the Donald Trump for this generation - there's always some new, flashy proposal for Manhattan. Even with all its success, One57 will be shortlived as Manhattan's tallest residential. But Barnett may like the fit of that crown. He's promised Nordstrom to build an iconic tower. Either way, it will be another supertall under construction in New York, as early as next year, maybe soon enough to steal some thunder from 432 Park.

It looks like an early version of the Freedom Tower design sitting on top of a pedestal that looks like a mountain. :yuck:

To be honest, one messy, whacky design would contrast well with the relatively subdued designs for One57 and especially 432 Park. At the very least I'm glad all of these 57th St supertalls aren't all the same cheap, blue glass box. I'm digging the diversity, and the architects behind these projects appear keen on making their own unique mark on the new Manhattan skyline.

Even though I want this design to be minimalist and boxy, I could definitely work with a tower similar to the discarded 1WTC design by Liebiskind, but as a full building with no cage on top. And silver, NOT bronze, like the other proposal.
