I took a flight to Moncton from Halifax about 2 years ago while on a business trip from St. John's. The flight time from Halifax to Moncton is about 25 minutes up and down. I get that people might just drive it more often than fly, but it's definitely not equal time.

I would have flown direct from St. John's to Moncton if possible, and the extra cost of flying into Moncton from Halifax was worth it compared to renting a car and driving 2 hours.

For some reason Flair never seems to show up in the Google Flights search results. As an experiment I did a search for Hamilton to Abbotsford flights, and the only options returned were WestJet and Swoop. Odd...

It isn't uncommon for small or ULCC airlines not to show up in Google Flights or other similar system searches. They aren't always part of the industry standard reservation networks... it's cheaper for them to just run a standalone proprietary system and direct all passengers to their own website or call centre.

Makes sense...though I'd argue they're losing out on a lot of potential travellers whose first instinct is to type a flight search into Google.

Back in the old days of EPA (Eastern Provincial Airways), they had milk run routes ........

Yes…..back in the mid ‘60s Eastern Provincial had quite the milk run: Moncton-Charlottetown-New Glasgow-Sydney-Deer Lake-Gander-St. John’s on a ‘Dart Herald’ (similar to today’s’ Dash-8)

Some flights even operated Moncton-Summerside-Charlottetown

Timetable here:

And you didn’t have to go back to the ‘60s to get a good tour of the region’s airports......Air Bras d’Or had the Maritimes pretty well covered including Port Hawkesbury, Digby and St. Leonard for a year or so in the mid ‘80s using a ‘Twin Otter’

Eastern Provincial I assume is our Provincial Airlines? They were quite shady in how they chose whether or not to add the province to the names of its bureaus lol

Their offerings have actually expanded, though probably not in frequency:

PAL Airlines. Ugh. Provincial Airlines Airlines.

You would think... but someone presumably did the math.

No...EPA was originally a Newfoundland company who took over Maritime Central Airways then was acquired by Canadian Pacific......which became Canadi>n Airlines (who were originally PWA) and then was taken over by Air Canada. Got it? :)

You'd barely be off the runway in Summerside before you'd be preparing to land in Charlottetown! :haha:

Makes sense - EPA logo is clearly the inspiration for PAL's logos tho.

Fare was $5.....or $40 in todays $$.

Moncton-Summerside was $7 or about equal to todays Confederation Bridge toll.

Moncton to Summerside would be about a 12-15 minute flight too. It's only on the other side of the Northumberland Strait.

Probably not even worth hauling up the landing gear........ :haha:

Maybe it is 25 minutes of flight time (Google says 40 minutes for a direct AC flight, probably gate to gate) but that does not count the time buffer you need when arriving for a flight, whether you're connecting or not. YHZ is quite far outside the city. A car trip downtown to downtown will be similar to a flight.

We're also completely ignoring cost and the fact that if you drive you end up with a car at your destination. Some people will do connecting flights but only a tiny fraction of passenger traffic between Moncton or Halifax happens by air.

Even 400-600 km trips are often not worth it time and hassle wise, without considering money. I'm still kind of confused about who we're allowed to admit flies out of YHZ but if a lot of Maritimers did it would make sense for many of them to drive to YHZ rather than fly in from a smaller nearby airport. A lot of those small airports have very expensive flights and connections. It can be more expensive to fly to Sydney NS from Halifax than to Toronto.

That's Saint John NB, not St. John's NL. :)

And yes, still no news, but it's pretty obvious they're telegraphing a new Saint John - Boston route...........

LOL they can't make anything from Montreal work.

Quote:

WestJet Airlines is cancelling service between Montreal and Quebec City and cutting back on flights across its network as it reduces capacity to meet consumer demand while also trying to reverse its first quarterly loss in 13 years.

Looks like the following are cut:
Montreal-Quebec
Calgary-Mexico City
Vancouver-Mexico City
Halifax-Deer Lake
Toronto-Fort McMurray

So one of those cuts is YUL and all of a sudden “nothing from YUL works?” That’s a bit of an exaggeration, no?

No it's not. In the past two years WestJet has cut YUL-Fort Lauderdale, Punta Cana, Montego Bay, Orlando, Turks and Caicos, St. Maarten, Boston, and now Quebec City. Plus Vancouver and Winnipeg are now seasonal.

WestJet will serve a total of three destinations year round YYC, YYZ and YHZ.

People from Quebec want nothing to do with West Jet for many reasons, notably the presence of other more-known carriers (Transat, AC), a bad image and the overall low presence of West Jet in Quebec as a whole.
