Ice cream, certainly. Their product line seems to be just butter and cream cheese now, but Challenge is still very much a going concern. I recognized the logo immediately as it's not much different today: http://challengedairy.com/ Challenge butter is a common sight in supermarkets around here; I assumed it was well-known so I was a little surprised you didn't recognize them. Regarding Bellevue Courts, last spring I did some research and even made a map of historic bungalow courts in Pasadena: NRHP bungalow courts in Pasadena Bellevue Court was built in 1916 in Colonial Revival style and consists of 8 individual units, plus one two-story triplex at the back. It was included in a 1983 group nomination of 27 bungalow courts to the National Register of Historic Places. It was determined eligible but was not added to the NRHP due to the owner's objection. |

Then there is the sad story of Frederick Merrill, an 87 year old inventor and resident who slipped on a banana peel on Main Street and died from his injuries a couple of weeks later. Finally, in 1943 a fight broke out in the hotel's lobby and Mrs. Mae Perry, the hotel manager, broke up the scuffle...with a gun. Rubio Ernesto, 17 and not a hotel guest was killed in the incident. |

This ranch had once been the Lasky-Paramount movie ranch back in the very early days of film making. Cecil B. DeMille once shot parts of Squaw Man (1914) there. Also, D.W. Griffith shot scenes for Intolerance (1916) here as well. The studio moved most of the standing sets up the coast to Agora in 1924 and opened the new Paramount Ranch there, but this entire area remained a film shooting location and on this day the movie was being shot, literally, right in our front yard.http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original wesclark.com The author also provides a 2012 image of the area here. I chose to do my own. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Google Earth |

I found a match to the white house in the first slide and viola there's the mural (on the right) partially hidden by new construction. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...911/cj99nh.jpg gsv |

this mural to resemble a rolodex card with the Frank's Liquor tab and then subsequent info, but the current photo shows the building is designed like that, so maybe not. |
