Hi guys...

Those who know me from SSC most likely also know my Copenhagen photoblogs.... and now that has come to SSP too :)

The deal is that I devide the year into two parts - Spring, Summer and Fall goes in the Summer version and Winter in the - yes you guessed it...the Winter edition :)

And what you are looking now is - as the title says... the Summer version...

How it works you might ask - well it's very simple... from time to time I go on photosprees, and I then posts pics of the area visited with a small description and a Goolge Earth map to make it easier to place for people interested in more than just pretty colours :)

If you are interested in more info all you have to do is ask, and I'll help yu out with as much as posible... and feel VERY free to ask!

Anyway - enough with the chit chat... let's get this baby started...

http://i13.tinypic.com/2j4vltv.jpg

We start off in the center of Copenhagen - the City Hall Tower - on a wonderful sunny March 27

The tower itself is 106m tall, but the viewing platform is only located around 80m up.. but it's still high enough to get a great 360* view of my beloved city!

http://i13.tinypic.com/2ai4zsw.jpg

We start of with the City Hall Square...
http://i3.tinypic.com/2ldivkw.jpg

Then we take a look north..
http://i14.tinypic.com/44hchw3.jpg

And west..
http://i11.tinypic.com/2cgzok5.jpg

And south west...
http://i9.tinypic.com/2jae1hj.jpg

And here we have Copenhagen Downtown..
http://i11.tinypic.com/4idmo07.jpg

Back north again - the church in the middle is the "Church of Our Lady"
http://i14.tinypic.com/44uevtg.jpg

And finally we look east over the island of Amager.. notice Sweden in the horizon..
http://i14.tinypic.com/351d01x.jpg

Okay so now you have seen the tower view now... let's move down on the City Hall Square and look around a bit...

Moving out to the Søndre Frihavn area - an old free port area now turned commercial and residential..

The area is home to some of the most exclusive residential buildings - where f.ex Princess Mary lived before her and the Crown Prince were married...

It's also home to some, by Danish standard, fairly high buildings with a few new ones on the way...
The most noticable of the buildings are the 62m PSG Huset and the 45m Alm. Brand Huset

Chances are I will revisit this area again a little earlier in the day with better lighting to follow, but for now this will do...

And here we go... ( pics are from March 27 btw )

Now I'll like to present Gammeltorv for you..

It's an old square in the middle of the pedestrian street Strøget and where people like f.ex Clinton made his public appearance..

So enjoy and keep in mind it's stil only very early spring here ( April 12 ) :)

Okay - let's move on to the King's square ( Kongen's Nytorv )

It's one of my favorite squares in the city... and I was looking forward to sharing the pics - unfortunatly the trees on the square has not started turning green yet ( pics from April 12 ) - so this won't be the last time I visit this place in this thread... but for now this will do :)

http://i13.tinypic.com/2hrhfkg.jpg

As you can see it's a pretty exclusive place - home to some of the most expensive shops, hotels and lots in town...

A few meters away from Kongen's Nytorv we find the old port of Nyhavn...

Over the years it was been home to all sorts of people, most known is probable Hans Christian Andersen who lived here in the 1870's

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1639/nyhavnei4.jpg

Today most of it is small restaurants who serve typical Danish seafood - but the main income, is as it should be, generated by selling ice cold Danish draughtbeers to be enjoyed in the sun... :)

It's pretty nice. What's the population of Copenhagen?

Are Euros used in Denmark? I see "139" written on this thing by the restaurant, I assume that can't be the price in Euros :p

Also, why did Copenhagen get rid of trams

The Municipals of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg has just under 600.000 - the metro has 1,8mil and the Øresund region 3.5mil

We use Danish "Kroner" - but just about everywhere takes Euro...

All prices are in DKK...

We got the S-trains and more flexible buses instead - now we ofcause also have a metro...

The city design itself is 800+ years old - and despite the fires there have been over the years - the streets are still rarely designed with motortraffic in mind... and with bikelanes on almost all streets and roads there's not much room left for big bulky unflexible trams...

A bus is ( imo ) so much better and the system we have is exelent and will get you everywhere much fatser than any tram ever would!

:)

Beautiful photos, beautiful city! The bright color really makes the buses stand out.

i see you guys have a 7-11 there!

That can't be it...If you consider Amsterdam, with a nearly identical set up (AMS and CPH could be siblings :D) plus the canals and even more busy, a city with one of the most extensive tram networks in the world.
That said, CPH has an excellent public transport network. The subway is magnificent!

Beautiful. On my list of cities to visit, no doubt.

FREKI Apr 14, 2007 5:12 AM

Thanks all! :)

@SHIRO - as your own pics shows it would almost imposible to have two-way car traffic on such a street without having the trams slow down and/or even halt the traffic.... buses however would just blend perfectly into the traffic..

In Amsterdam's case I take it the city have had them for just as long as Copenhagen did - so where we skipped them in the 70's for buses, you guys kept them and therefore devolped a traffic network with trams in mind...

About the AMS CPH siblings I couldn't agree more.... everytime I see pics from the Netherlands I'm amazed at how much our nations look a like...

And we normally also score very equal on the different charts and top nation lists...

I would deffinetly say CPH as a city have more in common with Amsterdam than it has the rest of the Nordic Capitals... :)

And this brings us to the last of the April 12 series - Amalienborg Palace and the Marble Church...

http://i17.tinypic.com/2m46dzs.jpg

Both areas started construction in 1750's... Amalienborg at that time was ment to be the home of 4 wealthy merchant families, but after a fire at Christiansborg Castle ( now home of the Parliament as well as the royal throne-room) the Royal family desided to move there... tough luck merchants :)

Surrounding the nearby Marble Church is some of the most exclusive apartments in Copenhagen, I sure in heck wouldn't mind living there...

It's a place I hold very deer as I used to be part of the Royals Guards who protects the area - and have certainly spend my time there...
I also think that the Marble Church is by far the most beautiful chruch we have in the country...

So I can guarantee you this IS an area that will be revisted later in the thread...

Anyway, let's get started shall we...

Amalienborg - the Crown Prince's Palace

Amsterdam also has an extensive bus network. And those trams are faster than you might think...;)
Of course (car)traffic is horrible like in any mayor city (especially now that they are building the North-South subway line right through the city center), but you get used to it.
