Very nice! About time Cleveland gets something over 30 floors. Mayday since you're the Cleveland guy here, what impact would it have on the skyline? Not familiar with the proposed location.

Jonboy1983 Nov 16, 2013 10:30 PM

That looks like a killer design! I hope the City of Cleveland has better luck at getting this thing off the ground than what Pittsburgh has had...!

:runaway:

My wife and I were in Cleveland last year and saw the big open pit in the ground that will eventually become the Convention Center. The center itself is a very unique design, and I think this hotel will complement not only the convention center but the city as well.

I'm sure Mayday is probably a better person to ask, but as I said before I was in Cleveland. To my knowledge, the Key Tower, currently the city's tallest building and the tallest building between Philly and Chicago, is only a block or two away. Given this close proximity to other tall high-rises, I think it can only add something positive to the skyline. I hope they build it!

edit: Oh, right... they are building this. Awesome!!

Nope, nevermind. My initial thought was right; it's just a proposal...

^Just to clarify, this is being financed by the county through tax-exempt bonds, casino revenue, etc., so the mo$t important part is spoken for, albeit not without criticism (i.e. should the county be in the hotel business, etc.).

Here are two rough ideas of how the hotel will show in the skyline:

Walking out of Tower City yesterday on my way back to work I tried to envision the building from Public Square. Doesn't seem like it will be that much taller than the Marriott Key Center.

Glad to see another skyscraper coming downtown and since I work nearby it'll be nice seeing it go up. I just hope they can give the building a more signature top than how they have it in the early schematic drawings.

Nice. Great to see a bit of infill.

mrnyc Nov 18, 2013 1:25 AM

aww - i thought it would be taller than the justice center (aka the jugly center, the ugliest eyesore in town)? you won't want the west-facing rooms that have to look at that building! :yuck: go for the rooms that face downtown, the mall or lake erie instead.

Outstanding win for Hilton. I had heard there was a lot of competition on this one from the major flags.

Here are some new renderings of the Convention Center hotel. Looks much better than the ones that were posted last week.

Demolition of the former county headquarters starts this week :)

It'll be nice to have a tower crane downtown again:

Just a quick update - I've been told the tower crane will be going up sometime in the summer or fall of this year. Also - any chance a Mod can add " - SITE PREP" to the thread title? Please and thank you! :)

Did this construction actually start and if so shouldn't it be moved from proposal to under construction thread?

MayDay Apr 29, 2014 4:46 PM

They had a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday and they're currently drilling caissons so not much longer.

Steely Dan Apr 29, 2014 4:53 PM

^ according to SSP standards, caisson drilling counts as official construction.

i'll go ahead and move the thread to the construction forum.

as far i know, this would now be tied with the loring apartments in minneapolis (both are listed at 374') for the tallest U/C building in the midwest outside of chicago.

MayDay Apr 30, 2014 10:49 AM

^Thanks Steely Dan! Didn't know about the 'tallest outside Chicago' - not huge bragging rights but a nice tidbit to know.

Here's the official webcam:

Also, how does one go about getting a rendering to show up as a thumbnail image on pages?

This will be a welcome addition to downtown Cleveland. Truly 1 of America's architectural hot spots, so many ornate buildings in Cleveland.

Dracmus Jun 22, 2014 1:19 PM

Did they increase the size and/or floor count? According to Emporis, it will be about 415 feet tall with 32 stories. Or am I missing something?

MayDay Jun 22, 2014 3:07 PM

I haven't heard anything along those lines - and look at the rest of the listings Emporis has for Cleveland; not exactly the most up to date.

ardecila Jun 22, 2014 4:20 PM

It's funny to see several cities putting up a massive convention center hotel at once... Indy, Austin, Cleveland, Chicago, etc.
