Park Cities in Dallas is notorious for doing the same thing. The same rich slumlords that are derelict in their duty to safely maintain apartment complexes they rent out to people in poor, predominantly minority districts refuse to integrate their own neighborhoods because they don't want to share their fortune with those less fortunate. In particular, children who go to schools in low income neighborhoods don't get nearly the same quality of education as those in rich neighborhoods. Through no fault of their own, they experience de facto segregation and live "separate but equal." Despite Dallas's attempts to push for affordable housing in parts of Dallas that are serviced by Highland Park ISD, people there still refuse to see that they are participating in systemic racism and say that minorities are just too culturally "different" to be able to integrate.

Thompson Hotels to open Houston location in Buffalo Bayou mixed-use

Thompson Hotels, a New York-based luxury hotel chain, plans to build the Thompson Houston at Tianqing Real Estate Development LLC and Houston-based DC Partners' mixed-use development at the southeast corner of Allen Parkway and Gillette Street, a hotel spokesperson said in an email. A construction timeline wasn't provided, but DC Partners CEO Roberto Contrerassaid in June that the project's then-unannounced luxury hotel would have between 150 and 180 rooms and would open around 2020.

The hotel will offer "a locally inspired Texas experience that incorporates the Thompson brand DNA," the hotel's spokesperson said.

Thompson Hotels has properties in New York City, Chicago, Seattle and Nashville, as well as one in Toronto and three in Mexico, according to its website.

I love this project. But, isn't San Antonio's Thompson Hotel & Residences project supposed to be delivered prior to 2020 - making IT the first Thompson in Texas?

Thompson Dallas is planned to open Fall 2018, making it the first Thompson hotel in Texas.

Eight new restaurants revealed for United's second phase at IAH

Chicago-based United Continental Holdings Inc. (NSYE: UAL) and New York-based OTG, which specializes in airport redesigns, have revealed eight restaurants that will open in the second phase of the ongoing renovation at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Additional projects will continue through 2021, as existing restaurant leases throughout the terminals expire, according to Rick Blatstein, OTG’s CEO. Altogether, the projects will cost $120 million when completed, Gavin Malloy, United’s vice president of corporate real estate, previously told the HBJ.

In addition to the eight new planned restaurants in Terminals C South and E, United and OTG will also renovate the holding areas for passengers waiting to board flights, Malloy said.

Houston Planning Commission Approves 8-Story Midtown Midrise

Houston (Harris Co.) - Allied Orion Group won approval to construct an eight-story mid-rise condominium in Houston's bustling Midtown.

The project presented Jan. 19 will have a three-story parking garage and a total of 142 parking spaces. There will be five stories of condominium units above the garage.

The front of the building will face McGowen Street and is between Austin and LaBranch Streets. The proposed structure totals 81,773 square feet.

The parking entrance will be on Austin. Other than parking, a portion of the ground level will be set aside for offices. However, there may also be some retail.

First look: Local Foods Downtown

The Downtown Houston restaurant scene improves dramatically this week when restaurateur extraordinaire Benjy Levit opens his fourth Local Foods restaurant in the Art Deco jewel that was formerly Byrd's Department Store at 420 Main at Prairie.

Levit set Jan. 12 as the official opening day for the 9,000-square-foot space (Georgia's Market was most recent tenant) housing his and chef-partner Dylan Murray's brand of simple, fresh, locally-sourced foods. The Local Foods concept was launched in 2011 next door to Levit's iconic Benjy's in Rice Village. The casual counter-service restaurant serving sandwiches, soups, salads and marketplace side dishes was an immediate hit, spawning a second store at Westheimer and Kirby in 2014, and a third (boasting a wood-fired pizza oven) in Tanglewood this past summer.

Design-wise, Local Foods is gorgeous. Levit tapped Michael Hsu and Micah Land of Michael Hsu Office of Architecture in Austin and designer Aaron Rambo of Found for the Home in Highland Village to execute his vision for the corner space with walls of windows that front Main and Prairie.

Nightclub in former downtown Houston church opens ahead of Super Bowl

A downtown building has completed its church-to-club transition.

The Clé Group opened Spire, at 1720 Main St., in the former First Church of Christ Scientist building on Jan. 15, according to Spire's Facebook page. The group also operates nearby sister club Clé.

Spire started its dogma-to-dance transition this past summer. Owner Zack Truesdell worked with partners Andy Estes, Salim Dehkordi and Dallas Rodriguez, to open the mostly electronic club. The 15,625-square-foot site was listed for $2.25 million and sold to undisclosed owners in early 2016.

The First Church of Christ Scientist had owned the land since 1908 and redeveloped the building in 1961 to replace an older chapel. But congregation numbers at the church had been dropping.

More details revealed about proposed luxury apartment tower in Midtown

Caydon Property Group has unveiled its plans for one of the first luxury apartment towers in Midtown.

The Melbourne, Australia-based developer plans to redevelop a dilapidated city block— bounded by Drew, Fannin, Main and Tuam streets — into The Midtown, a 27-story, 357-unit apartment tower. The $200 million project will rise on a 1.15-acre site at 2850 Fannin St., across Main Street from the Midtown “Super Block” Park and Metro’s McGowen Station light rail stop.

Caydon acquired the land in mid-December and began demolition work in early January on the tract, which hosted the former Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County building.

Caydon, which is under construction on nearly 5,000 apartment units in Melbourne, said it hopes to start construction on its first U.S. apartment tower later this year. Caydon selected Birmingham, Alabama-based Hoar Construction to build The Midtown, which is expected to be completed in 2019.

The Midtown, designed by Houston-based Ziegler Cooper Architects, will feature a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with high-end finishes and features. The luxurious common-area amenities include a private pool with a swim-up bar, fitness center with a yoga studio and a sky lounge overlooking Midtown and downtown Houston.

The Midtown will also feature 12,000 square feet of leasable retail space for shops and restaurants along Main and Drew streets, as well as a parking garage for 482 cars.

Russo said he fell in love with Houston and Midtown in particular when he first visited the Bayou City in 2015. He said he believes Midtown is ripe for an urban, high-rise development that will allow residents to walk, bike or use the light rail to get to work, restaurants and entertainment venues. Caydon estimates residents will spend only 10 minutes on their work commute.

“With the site’s close proximity to jobs in Downtown Houston, the Museum District and the world’s largest medical precinct, I have no doubt there will be significant interest in The Midtown from prospective tenants,” Russo said. “The Midtown development will rejuvenate and create considerable interest in the area, especially our efforts to activate Main and Drew streets with shops and restaurants that will appeal to new Millennial-generation apartment dwellers and existing residents.”

Levy Park in Upper Kirby to reopen in February

A closed park near Richmond Avenue is slated to reopen next month.

Levy Park, at 3801 Eastside, is reopening at 10 a.m. on Feb. 25, according to a release. The Upper Kirby Redevelopment Authority is behind the $10 million renovation of the 5.6-acre park adjacent to the mixed-use development Kirby Grove. The group broke ground in July 2015.

The park is expected to include:

- A performance pavilion with a 1,600 square-foot stage, 23 skylights, nighttime up-lighting, and a mini-amphitheater for kids’ programs, family and public restrooms and a staff office.

- A 17,500 square-foot lawn that provides an audience area facing the pavilion stage, accommodating up to 3,000 people for bands, symphonic orchestras, movie screenings, concert simulcasts, sports simulcasts, dance and other performances.

- A 22,000 square-foot activity lawn devoted to a range of activities, including a putting green, yoga, tai chi, fitness boot camp, petanque, badminton, fitness classes, imagination playground building blocks and picnicking.

- A 24,000 square-foot play area devoted to kids, featuring a climbing wall and seven-foot-wide slide, the cosmo (a 14-foot climbing sphere), lighted tunnels, dance chimes, turning sculptures, a three-tiered water feature, a mini amphitheater and the Overlook, a colorful boardwalk structure that winds gradually up into the live oak canopy.

- A refurbished double-decker bus will serve beer, wine and small food items, and seating and umbrellas will fill out a citrus grove garden surrounding the bus.

- A food kiosk will serve park goers rotisserie chicken, beverages and other food items in the northwest corner of the park.

- A restaurant projected to open in mid-2018.
- 27 community garden beds.

- A dog park with sections devoted to large and small dogs, including turf-covered mounds for play, trees for shade, a water feature and a double-gated safety entrance.

- 600 pieces of Fermob outdoor furniture, including bistro tables and chairs and rocking chairs, will serve visitors in every nook and corner of the park, and foosball, ping pong, board games, art supplies, a reading rack with books and periodicals. Wi-Fi will all be free and regularly available to the public. Professional piano players will be commissioned to play a moveable park piano.

- 30 live oak trees, 60-70 years old, plus 180 newly planted trees.
