:) Good thread. I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, and underneath the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn side briefly when I was in NY. I can't wait until I get my head above water financially enough to justify going back. There is no darn way in the world that you can properly see even a fraction of New York in three days. I have a bit of a fantasy about one day living there, though I don't know if that will ever actually happen.

Though I'm not from New York, but I do often think about how we drive over our bridges carelessly, almost oblivious of the fact that they are engineering marvels and nearly forgetting that we would in many cases be entirely stuck on one side of the water without them.

Tacoma has the twin Narrows Bridges. Travel by car between the center of town and Gig Harbor only takes five or ten minutes. It would take hours if those bridges weren't there. Heck, not that long ago it was scientifically impossible to cross the Mississippi.

^ Good points. Together with the subways, the bridges of New York are the glue that ties the city together.

Last fall, the state unveiled three designs for the new bridge, including standard concrete deck arch and through arch proposals as well as a more modern cable-stayed model.

As a sign of New Yorkers' growing design savvy, the latter won out, with almost half the public voting for it. Construction is expected to begin on the new $1 billion bridge later this year, with a completion date set for 2017.

The 101-year-old bridge, which cantilevers over the East River from 59th Street in Manhattan to Long Island City, Queens, is not the only structure to be rechristened this week. State legislators voted on Tuesday to rename the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel after former Gov. Hugh L. Carey.

The two renamings would be the most significant change to New York City nomenclature since the Triborough Bridge took the mantle of Robert F. Kennedy two years ago.

The creation of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge must be approved by the City Council; Speaker Christine C. Quinn said Tuesday that she supported it, adding that Mr. Koch “deserves way more than a street.” The renaming of the tunnel awaits only the expected signature of Gov. David A. Paterson. The 60-year-old tunnel originates in Brooklyn, Mr. Carey’s birthplace. And the Queensboro Bridge crosses into the former Congressional district of Mr. Koch.

i never knew this thread existed and it is absolutely incredible..............but there is no way you can confuse the Verrazano with the Whitestone or any other similar looking bridge. The Verrazano is an exquisite , awe inspiring structure. Other then the Golden Gate Bridge, this one is King:worship:

Yes but Hellgate's is more similar, because of the stone structures at the ends. Sydney's bridge has those.

i'll clarify, i meant suspension bridges only. GGB is #1 , Verrazano #2 the other suspension bridges in NY pale in comparison to Verrazano, hence my comment ;)

a friend of mine who lives in Jersey told me there was talk of replacing the Bayonne as the traffic deck sits too low to allow certain types of vessels through and it is hampering economic growth. anyone know anything about that? it would be a shame, that's quite a beautiful bridge

There was talk as well of replacing one of the other Staten Island/Jersey crossings. Part of the recent finalization of the WTC redevelopment involves the PA rebuildng the Bayonne Bridge.
