Look at that freaking streetwall on James there! What the hell was wrong with people back then? It looks like Yonge Street. So dense.

Paul29 Feb 6, 2011 1:14 AM

Ah, I forgot about the Robinson's building there. It was a vacant lot for the longest time that I remember.

Dr Awesomesauce Feb 6, 2011 6:31 AM

Great website! I miss those old yellow and black trollies!

Any idea why they tore it down. I remember they turned it into a parking lot.

Was it one of those, "progress" things in the 80's?

matt602 Feb 6, 2011 10:42 PM

Pretty much. Robinsons turned into a failure after awhile and the building was probably vacated. Royal Bank next door also moved somewhere else. Without knowing the exact history, I'm guessing both these things happened at about the same time. Someone probably bought up both buildings and razed em.

SteelTown Feb 6, 2011 11:56 PM

The property belongs to Yale. The city wanted to buy the land but Yale wants something like over 2 million for the land.

I'd also love some older pics from the core. I worked at Kresge's in the late 80's early 90's until it closed. I heard all the glory stories from customers and other employees and would love some pics especially of the Kresges building itself......I'm still convinced it's haunted.

Haunted? Haha I can see that. I wanted to say Zellers cause I remember the "Zellers" sign painted on the wall in that walkway. Even vague memories of the cafeteria with the swinging red stools. Cripes, I'm 5 yrs old again!

I miss that old building smell lol. I was reminded of the old Eatons when I was at D'illards in Cleveland @ Tower City before it closed down because it had the MASSIVE wooden escalators. I remember taking the warehouse style elevator with the gates, the toy department in the basement and my mom paying her Eatons bill on the top floor. Also the Robinsons store and the trolley busses bring back memories indeed.

My parents and I lived downtown on Catherine St. til' I was about 4, than we moved to a starter home in West Hamilton. My dad would also stoller me to the 'Book Villa' on King, and 'Jewells Book Store' in the Terminal Towers. I know this is a photothead, but just wanted to share some memories of the core

The pic below was titled looking toward VanWagners Beach.... i am assuming this was taken on Windemere Rd in the 30's or 40's, but what interests me is the sign in the photo. Can anyone elaborate on it.... thanks....

Hi stuckinexeter;
No that is VanWagners Beach where Hutch's is located, during WW2 large guns were tested over Lake Ontario before being sent overseas.
Thanks for plugging my Site.

Awesome

Lets see if we can add some dates to these

those are the tracks fo the Hamilton Radial on the right, so this is after 1896
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...eter/ham44.jpg

Gore Park has been extended, but the tower flag pole hasn't been built, so this is circa 1899
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...eter/ham13.jpg

The tower flag pole has been built, but the washrooms haven't, so this is sometime between 1900 and 1913
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...eter/ham18.jpg

This is the First Methodist Church under construction, so this is the summer of 1913
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4...xeter/ham4.jpg

Gage Farm, not yet Gage Park. So before 1919, but judging by the sprawl, not very much before 1919

That's an awesome Gore Park photo.
