Additionally, looks like WS has dropped a few planned route resumptions this month including: YEG-CUN/PVR/YHZ & YWG-CUN/PVR.

YEG-YHZ still resuming this month

Only for 3 flights. Doesn’t look like it made the January update. YEG-PVR/CUN did however now from January 9th. PHX moves from Sat to Friday. I can take a look again in the morning to see if anything else was added back.

WS also kept YYC-YOW well AC is cancelling it.

Biggest surprise is YYC-LIR. I figured they would focus the Caribbean/Central America routes at YYZ.

Also WS will upguage YYC-CUN to a 789 on Fri/Sat as well.

The Chinese CAAC approved Sichuan airline's application for 1x weekly YYZ-CTU. Not sure whether 3U will move one of the 2x weekly currently from YVR to YYZ, or this is meant when everything is back to normal. Also unsure of where the frequency came from too.. Maybe SHE is not coming back, or they're getting it from another airline who gave up some of their Canadian route?

Possibly from HU as I doubt they'll be resuming YYC-PEK?

PAL Airlines press release from today:

PAL appears to be planning for the Romeo LeBlanc International Airport to become a hub for it's airline in the Maritime region. With the current St. John's service, and planned Moncton-Ottawa service (after the pandemic abates), the following routes will be available:

Moncton - St. John's NL
Moncton - Deer Lake NL
Moncton - Wabush NL
Moncton - Ottawa ON

This is big news for CYQM. If Moncton becomes a hub for the airline, there could be the possibility of further service expansion (with this particular airline) down the road (Gander, Montreal, Toronto). :)

The Deer Lake and Wabush services start in January. I could see Deer Lake being a popular destination in the wintertime (Marble Mountain), and the summertime too (Gros Morne).

At present, the only other carrier operating on a regularly scheduled basis to Moncton is Air Canada (to Montreal and Toronto). Hopefully after the end of the pandemic, we will see the return of WestJet and Porter for year round operations and SunWing and Air Transat for sun destination flights in the wintertime. Swoop was supposed to begin service to Moncton in the summer of 2020, but that didn't get off the ground because of the pandemic.

If this proves successful, I would imagine YOW-YQM-YYT will see the new PAL DH4 in order to be a competitive product in ‘normal’ times. I could also see YQY-YQM 3-4 years from now.

The PAL press release noted that one of the reasons for the change was to "solidify our new fleet of Q400 aircraft in regular commercial service and enhance connectivity across our network." I would imagine this is the equipment they have in mind.

As for YQY-YQM, I think the only way this would work is if YQY was an intermediate destination between YYT and YQM. This is possible. There are a fair number of ex pat Newfoundlanders in Cape Breton (although mostly from western Newfoundland).

It would certainly be contingent on YQY getting YHZ back before YQM, but yeah a through flight from NFLD might make it viable...although YQX-YQY-YQM is a bit of a non-optimal routing.

Transat lost almost 1/2 billion in their 2020 FY: https://www.journaldemontreal.com/20...pour-transat-1

Quote:

Almost all of that 1.3 billion in revenue would have been from Nov 19 to Mar 20.

There's a petition to get YEG named after Max Ward. It already has almost 9,000 signatures.

Seeing Wardair 747s and DC-10s at YOW as a kid in the early-mid 80s is what sparked my interest in aviation.

EPA (Eastern Provincial) flew routes back in the '60s very similar to PAL today. Their Flight #102-103 was a real 'milk-run' and if operating today would restore the Air Canada YHZ-YQY and YHZ-YDF routes......and give those ex pat Newfoundlanders in Cape Breton a link back home to Western Newfoundland :)

The 'Dart Herald' equipment EPA used was a high wing turbo-prop very similar to a Dash-8/Q400. It carried around 45 passengers.

Here's another petition. This time travel agents are pleaing not to be forgotten. If airlines refund pax, the airlines will want upwards of $200M in agent commissions refunded to them.

British Airways appears to have officially cancelled YYC for S21 (and probably permanently).

YYZ/YUL and YVR were all reduced in frequencies.

KLM will likely be YYC's sole foreign long-haul carrier in 2021, as I don't see Edelweiss or Condor resuming either.

Nice. Glad Penticton has an alternative.
YCG here in Castlegar brought in Central Mountain Air when we lost AC to Vancouver (and Calgary).

Copa resumed PTY-YYZ last week and PTY-YUL this week. Always good to see another international carrier resuming service to Canada.

BA has been disappointing, frankly. They have kept up service at YYZ, but have all but forgotten about our other 3 major airports. They had restarted YUL early in October, but dropped it at the beginning of the winter schedule, on Oct 31. Clearly one of the weakest presences in Canada by a European major this year.

AF, KL, LH, TP and TK seem to be faring better.

I could be wrong, but I had heard BA was struggling on its Canadian routes even pre-COVID? Also well many EU airlines got state aid, I don't think BA got any (I also could be wrong on this).

It was confirmed today they are permanently suspending YYC. WestJet could get a whole summer being the only carrier flying YYC-LON (I have my doubts on AC LHR. I'd say FRA has the better shot of returning).

samuelx88 Dec 17, 2020 7:25 PM

Do you think that Westjet will return to YQB in summer 2021? Because I think that their seasonal YQB-YYC route could work even better since Canadian might prefer to travel domestically for the next year and Air Canada never flown it directly. Or could they try YQB-YVR like they do in Halifax every summer?

I don’t think that WS will return to YQB until 2022 and at first only to YYZ. It’s going to be a long recovery. Summer 2021 is going to look a lot like summer 2020, but slightly better. Just my prediction based upon the realistic rate of vaccination...also assumes the vaccine works for more than a few months.

WS adding weekly YYZ-BON in February. Flights are not currently loaded but schedule is in press release. I can check to see if they file an initial February update tonight.
