Here's the issue. You have the Preservation Alliance fighting both the height (why?) and Toll's decision to not preserve the facades. Then you have Inga (and invariably the CDR) who are blasting the two face design. Basically, you have all these voices criticizing different aspects of the building but - and here's the rub - Toll's building doesn't need a single variance. MAYBE, if those in opposition of the tower could rally around a single - and reasonable - concession, Toll might listen. But as long as Toll is building "by right" and opposition voices are fragmented, don't expect any drastic changes.

I'm going to be honest, I feel Inga was softer than usual in this article. I expected her to go on a full attack against Toll Bros, but her critiques were much milder than usual.

The red buildings are my personal wish list. Most of the past proposals that died deserved to die, but the Mandeville? It should have been built. On the other hand, look at all the blue ones that are under construction or near completion. :tup:

I don't even know what to say about this. I don't know what reality this person is living in where 29+ story buildings in Philadelphia are "strange." May not have noticed the 45 story tower looming over them a block away.

Obvious that CDR Committee would agree that the split personalities is awful but am a little surprised they preferred a modern building. But if that's the case, Toll needs to do more than just plop a glass tower on a brick podium like 2116 Chestnut.

Of course...I could also totally see Toll ignoring these recommendations.

Well... for those who want to see this building come up, that's a step in the right direction.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. While the preservationists dick around with this lost cause, they could instead be focusing their energies on the rest of the buildings on Jewlers Row. Or are they going to wait until the next development comes along? The preservationists in the city must work proactively in identifying historical properties, rather than trying to protect any old building facing demolition. Get it together folks.

Yup...they shit the bed here. Refocus this energy on making sure it doesn't happen again.

The system actually works pretty well if people just take the time to write a nomination and present it. Historians are lazy.
