Texas Children's Hospital's board of trustees recently approved plans to build a 19-story tower on top of a six-story facility next to the Texas Children's Pavilion for Women in the Texas Medical Center.

The 25-floor tower is expected to be complete in 2018. The expansion will add a 130-bed intensive care unit, new operating rooms and will house the Texas Children's Heart Center, which will move into the new tower from its current location at 6621 Fannin St., said Jenn Jacome, Texas Children's Hospital spokeswoman.

How much square footage the expansion will add was not immediately available.

"These programs are at the core of our mission to create a healthier future for children throughout our broad community and will ensure the best possible outcomes for some of the nation's sickest children," said Mark Wallace, president and CEO of Texas Children's Hospital. "The expansion will help us deliver on our promise to make Texas Children's the best possible place to give and receive care."

The plans also include renovating the emergency center and other areas of the hospital's West Tower.

At the Texas Medical Center, there's nowhere to go but up.

The board of Texas Children's Hospital has "enthusiastically approved" a $506 million expansion on the medical center campus that includes construction of a 19-story tower on top of the existing building base next to Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, officials announced Tuesday.

The project will add 640,000 square feet and 130 beds and make the tower the new home to Texas Children's Heart Center.

The addition, slated to be completed in 2018, is the latest development supported through the hospital's $475 million Promise campaign, a fundraising effort to "ensure the future of Texas Children's as a lead in pediatric and women's health," a release from the board states.

The new tower focuses on additional space for pediatric and cardiovascular intensive care, as well as new operating rooms. After the tower is completed, the Emergency Center and other areas in the hospital's West Tower will be renovated.

In an effort to meet the growing needs of our patients, we’re adding a 19-floor pediatric tower to the existing building base next to Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women. The new tower, currently named "Tower E," is slated to come online in 2018 and will include the following enhancements:

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) - 6 floors
Increases capacity to 129 beds

Larger rooms, patient and family focused
All ICUs are adjacent, including Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units

Heart Center - 7 floors
All Critical Care units are co-located

Cardiovascular Operating Rooms proximal to other high acuity operating rooms
Maintains functionality of the Heart Center

Helipad - Roof
Enables transport of critically ill patients

Renovation of the West Tower will follow to optimize efficiency of the Emergency Center areas and provide dedicated patient and family space. Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services will be located throughout the new spaces so that care can be delivered close to where patients are. The expansion of the hospital’s facilities and programs in the Texas Medical Center will create access and allow us to provide the best quality care for the children who need us the most.
