Phoenix, AZ (Central Avenue)

These were taken rather sporadically over a couple of days during my trip and I've tried to put them in some logical order. I have to say that I really like the Phoenix light rail and it was very convenient for where we wanted to go. Our hotel was nearby and we hardly used our car. Well done!

My Trip: Glendale - Scottsdale - Tempe - Phoenix (Central Ave) - Phoenix (Downtown)

I also took this shot from the freeway of the Central Avenue/Midtown skyline. I apologize for the quality ---->

Amazing photos stepper

I love Central Ave. and the Phoenix Financial Center aka Punchcard Building.

poconoboy61 Jan 17, 2010 3:37 AM

Nice photos.

Looks like a poor man's Glendale, CA.

glowrock Jan 17, 2010 3:51 AM

It's bigger than Glendale, CA, but I can see the resemblance somewhat... ;)

Nice photos, BTW. I'm actually going to be in Phoenix for a quick stopover on my way to Tucson a week from Monday, was actually thinking of staying at the Clarendon. Are the rooms nice? :)

Ha. I used to work near the Clarendon (Park Central)

Where'd you take that last shot of Midtown and the Coliseum?

shakman Jan 17, 2010 5:33 AM

There is a view from one of the mountains I have seen once on the Weather Channel. The angle of the view gave an appearance of Midtown and Downtown as one large skyline.

Do any of you Phoenix people know what and where I am referring to?

stepper77 Jan 17, 2010 9:23 AM

Thanks for the comments! I don't personally get the Glendale, CA reference as I think they are quite different. But, I think once Midtown grows up a bit more and fills in, it will look even better.

To glowrock: Yes, the rooms at the Clarendon were very comfortable, especially the beds, with an update, contemporary, sophisticated style. I really liked the pool in the courtyard and the rooftop patio was a nice space. Some of the staff were very friendly, others were quite rude. The person checking us in failed to tell us there was a fee to park in the their parking lot rather than on the street which is actually closer. And I'd avoid the bar. But, I think it's everything you'd expect from a boutique hotel.

To Buckeye Native: I took the shot from the freeway out the window of the car. We were traveling on hwy 10 west and taking the ramp to get on hwy 17 north.

PHX31 Jan 17, 2010 11:47 AM

very thorough and nice pictures. I think I saw you taking pictures one day. My 1 mile commute home includes going through this intersection:
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/591...ntrlave127.jpg
I seem to remember some guy taking pictures of this intersection, and he looked like the guy in the reflection from one of the earlier picures.

Did you see the guy in the pink gorilla suit at/near the same interseciton trying to get people to go to the Pink Spot coffee/espresso/ice cream store? He cracks me up everyday with his expressionless face and dance moves.

atl2phx Jan 17, 2010 4:23 PM

nice pics and tour of central.

i moved from PHX just as light rail was taking shape, looks like it's a nice addition to the central corridor. some of the stations have an unfinished look to them...i guess it could just be how they come across on camera. i also expected they would provide much more overhead shelter from the sun at each stop.

nice job, thanks for sharing.

Without any people on the streets, it looks deserted.

I imagine this area is going to look pretty cool when the cacti are full grown - although I'm guessing from how they're spaced out, they don't get huge.

As it is, it's a great shot - very surreal.

plinko Jan 17, 2010 9:09 PM

It amuses me to no end that someone can now take a trip to Phoenix and 'hardly use our car'.

Great photos of a neighborhood I know well (I used to live in the Landmark Towers). Some friends of mine designed the Chase Bank branch that appeared in several of your photos.

HooverDam Jan 17, 2010 11:12 PM

Very nice photos, though I have to disagree about the Phx Financial Center/punchcard building, that thing is a beauty!

TXLove Jan 17, 2010 11:27 PM

Great shots!

dktshb Jan 18, 2010 1:13 AM

Very nice! I can't think of a better street in Phoenix to have lightrail than Central Ave.

xzmattzx Jan 18, 2010 4:46 AM

Nice pictures. Were these all in Downtown, because it's strange to see a gas station and lowrise apartment buildings in Downtown if so.

plinko Jan 18, 2010 5:08 AM

^This is all Midtown Phoenix. Though one can those other things in Downtown Phoenix as well.
