The same eBay seller also has this slide of the Tail O The Pup https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/XXNJR4.jpg Jan. 1976 I used to eat lunch here when I worked at the Beverly Center. (1982 - 83) By then the school desks were gone & if I remember correctly there was a picnic table, or two, behind the Pup..........Oh, and I never got sick ...:slob: . |

The 1933 Group has this listed on their website as their next project to bring back in some location. "Stay tuned" is the only info at present. They have this photo on there: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/c...eg?format=500w1933Group 1964 Ford Thunderbird. Don't know what that signifies unless it was an ad or something. I found a similar but different photo of the same on another site: https://images.fineartamerica.com/im...ar-culture.jpgCarDiary |
P.S.: Here's a 1982 photo of the place with E_R's place of work (1982-83) in the background:

I guess this explains the antique cars parked along the building.

Screen grabs from "Shield for Murder", a noirish 1954 release starring Edmond O'Brien....I lightened up the grabs from the film so we can see more background...
https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds The film starts with a pre-title sequence, O'Brien is walking south on Doheny Dr. just north of Santa Monica Blvd. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds gsv https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds He walks past that brick building at the NE corner of Santa Monica/Doheny. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds In a few frames O'Brien is in the alleyway that comes in off of Doheny, we see him walking past it in the first screen grab...I knew it instantly, as I have walked through this alley hundreds of times, parking on Doheny late at night then making my way to Dan Tana's....O'Brien is in front of the back side of the property that is now the legendary Troubadour club....just to the left out of frame is the property that now houses the Doheny Room nightclub....then there's a driveway, on the other side of the driveway is Dan Tana's.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds The two telephone poles in the '54 image still bookend the Troubadour property....the building on the far right has lost the external staircase.... I had my own moment of infamy in this very same alleyway....about a year and a half ago I exited Tana's around 2:30, headed to the car on Doheny....there was a gaggle of photogs making a ruckus, in a few minutes the pop singer Miley Cyrus exited the rear of the Doheny Room....I was just a few steps east of where Eddie O'Brien stood all those years ago... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds ....and the paparazzi caught me in the background, clearly bemused by all the commotion. |

That's a brilliant epilog riichkay. I wasn't expecting that. Moody intrigue in the mean alleyways of LA ... Miley Cyrus ... and you. :) |

Hmmm. 1416 N. La Brea is (among other things) Harris-Kubrick Pictures Inc. and Kubrick Stanley. Quote:
I'm dubious that it was all filmed there, cause I don't think the management would look kindly on blowing paper all over their nice airport. |

After it's interior's cameo in The Killing, 1433 N. La Brea's exterior showed up briefly two years later in another noted noir film. Here it is in Irving Lerner's Murder by Contract from 1958. https://i.imgur.com/i2Bs0J9.jpg The ensuing scenes take place in the old Chaplin studio. (1hour:07min mark) |

old LA file I first knew of this place in 1972. I worked for a year about a block away and stood at the open bun one time. The food: Ordinary. The atmosphere: unique. |

Here's an early image of the Tail o' the Pup found.. Here https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/6xMkpt.jpg umm. . .I'm not certain of this location. What's that round cistern-like thingy on the building next door? . |
Here's a great little Streamline Moderne bowling center looking a little forlorn in Mid City. The National Bowling Academy was built in 1940 at 4871 W. Washington Blvd. The architect was William Douglas Lee, who also created the Chateau Marmont and El Royale apartments. It's currently available for lease at about $1/sq. ft.

'Wild Strawberries' clockface homage? Here are a couple more screengrabs from Kubrick's The Killing. [1956] In this scene we're inside the Hollywood Bus Station on Vine St. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/KIvDaN.jpg youtube I'm curious about the blank clock face. Does it just look blank because of a reflection or is it something other than a clock. . .like a light fixture? The scene begin at 44:40 As Sterling Hayden's character is walking out I believe we get a glimpse of the door that leads to the recently discussed Grapevine Room. (far right / just past the cigarette machine) https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/1cIxUt.jpg The faceless 'clock' also appears in a later scene at 47:17 YouTube . |

Slightly North of this location at Nemo St., riichkay, do you recall La Conversation Cafe & Bakery? After thirty years they closed last year, losing their space because a developer is buying up the block to create another monstrosity in West Hollywood. Have you heard anything about this? I bemoaned the Cafe's closing, as well as nearby Cafe D'Etoile last year, too, because these kinds of places are becoming extinct in West Hollywood. |
1944: Veloz and Yolanda at the Hollywood Canteen

https://www.660citynews.com/wp-conte..._152639_hd.jpg660citynews [Notice a place called The Little Joynt in the background.] Caption: In this June 27, 1946, photo is the Tail O' The Pup hot dog stand during its premiere in Los Angeles. Tail o’ the Pup opened in 1946 near the corner of La Cienega and Beverly Boulevards with a real, star-studded Hollywood-type gala. It was built by a man named Milton Black and its original owners were the dance team of Veloz and Yolanda. It was a way of investing their show biz earnings in something more stable. The dog, by the way, was 17 feet long and was basically a front piece that fit onto a more conventional kitchen trailer. [OldLARestaurants] https://laistassets.scprdev.org/i/f2...1-original.jpgLAist The above photo came from the Tail O' the Pup website, according to LAist, but the link is broken now. It is not dated. As E_R's photo below attests, it seems nearly every photo of this place looks like it was in a different location, but most of it's years until 1985 it was in the same space on La Cienega Blvd., but the surrounding area kept changing, so it has many backgrounds. It "seems" to have moved up and down the street a few hundred yards here and there, but pretty much the same location until it moved over to San Vicente later on. Quote:

With children in the bus station, any connecting door with a bar is not a good idea imo. |
https://i.postimg.cc/RZVx3v40/Insura...Long-Beach.jpg
Wikipedia/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insura...hange_Building What connects Tail o'the Pup's Veloz and Yolanda and the 1925 Insurance Exchange Building at 201-211 E. Broadway in Long Beach? Veloz and Yolanda's dance studio was in this building. The rear of the structure has a "ghost sign" on which, with scrutiny, one was in the 1960s--and perhaps still is--able to discern an advertisement for Veloz and Yolanda's studio. As in my tyke years I was a habitué of downtown Long Beach, I knew and mused over that wall sign, and Veloz and Yolanda, many many a time. Edit add: Ah, here we go: https://i.postimg.cc/yYRkfXZR/Veloz.jpg gsv You can still see the ghostly presence of Veloz and Yolanda . . . The "V" of "Veloz" is below the "S" of "Sawyer"; and "world's finest dance instruction" is clearest of all. |
The bus station clock in THE KILLING... possibly Kubrick didn't want the scene to get locked in to a specific time and had the glass smudged over?

There are two streets named after the dancers in the San Fernando Valley, Veloz Avenue and Yolanda Avenue. They intersect just south of Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana. |

Martin, I was saddened to see the bakery closed... 15-20 years ago there was a core of night crawlers who would close Tana's and then head out back to the parking lot on Nemo, in back of the bakery....someone would go into their trunk and pull out a bottle of vodka and paper cups....on occasion, we were there late enough that the early bakery crew showed up....the crew would sometimes take pity on these boozers and come out with yesterday's bread.... I need to be circumspect here, but the "core" included the late Harry Dean Stanton, and another veteran character actor still living, a cantankerous fellow who I will only identify by his first name, which is Dabney. One morning, in back of the bakery, Phil Spector, out on bail and awaiting trial, got up in my face over some perceived slight....he was dressed in that fright wig and a long Edwardian coat, truly a ludicrous figure....I laughed and told him I owned his "Back to Mono" box set, tried to mollify him....eventually he calmed down and apologized just like the kids of the day, "No disrespect, man, no disrespect". One other note on the carnage off the Santa Monica/Doheny corner, the noted martial arts master Emil Farkas has closed his dojo located immediately west of the Troubadour....he was there 50 years....Emil lives two doors from me and is a good friend...he did security for Spector in the early '60's, has great tales of Liberty Records, Snuff Garrett, Lou Adler....Elvis stopped in to the dojo one afternoon early '70s. |
