YYC has had zero luck with either of the two Canadian airlines (despite being a hub for both) this year. With AC further pushing FRA until June 24, I now believe they won't be back at all this summer. Both Europe routes will be likely be consolidated with its counterpart out of YVR. The only hope left is WestJet and maybe KLM for any kind of international service this summer.

YYC's next scheduled flight outside of North America is June 7 (WK ZRH). But I'm doubtful that will happen.

Surely you can't be surprised by AC's lack of interest in resuming long haul from YYC. It's the 4th "hub" in importance, and barely at that. As for WS, you can't be too surprised either, as most of those long hauls were full of connecting traffic. As cross Canada and US-Canada traffic is dead, your not getting much feed for these flights. At least YYZ, YUL and YVR have O&D to rely on. You don't have that at YYC to the same extent.

Like I said, WS to LGW might be the only thing YYC gets this summer.

On the bright side, domestic traffic should bounce back before international, so that should favor YYC later on.

I wonder if the pandemic finally compels WS to make the call and go all in on SkyTeam.

Yes please. As international travel shrinks there is going to be far more need for international connections through a few international hubs. You could see WS focusing on Paris, Amsterdam and Narita.

Even AC's domestic schedule out of YYC is basically nothing until the end of June. I still can see FRA at some point resuming, but LHR is debatable.

Word out of WS is they want to resume all 4 787 destinations this year (including Rome, which I 100% doubt).

KLM is the strongest contender for a foreign carrier to resume this summer/year.

In terms of Skyteam wouldn't Incheon make more sense over Narita? Prior to all this I think they mentioned they were interested in an expanded relationship with KE.

And I'm sick of not having a real alternative to AC for a network. Oneworld or SkyTeam. Just pick one already.

Wow, YOW. This is the national capital too - you'd think there would be a little more 'essential' government traffic ... guess not. Brutal. May/June will be the same, or at least not much better.

I'm pretty sure the feds are trying to keep all essential travel to a minimum.

Anyway, it's not like the feds are doing much on the ground anyway - that's mostly the domain of the provinces.

There is very little travel that is absolutely truly essential. Especially in a pandemic. And especially by folks who should be setting the example.

85% of the public service have been working from home for the past two months. Only absolutely essential travel is permitted and many departments are currently requiring Deputy Minister approval to travel.

YOW averaged about 18 scheduled aircraft movements a day in April (varied between 14 and 22), meaning the average flight to/from YOW had 13 pax aboard.

Keep in mind Ottawa still has a couple of trains per day each to Montreal/Quebec City and Toronto. Greyhound operated all month too, but now they’ve suspended service. You’re not even supposed to cross the bridges over to Gatineau without a good reason, let alone fly.

YOW was actually up through the end of February and still managed to break 1 million by the middle of March. At this rate YOW will be lucky to hit 1.5 million in 2020. If YVR think traffic will drop to 1995 levels in 2020, I think they might want to take a look at YOW’s April numbers and revise that to 1975!

Truenorth00 May 16, 2020 1:50 AM

The feds should fund any airside work, as part of stimulus, immediately. Ramp extensions, runway resurfacing, arrestor bed installation, etc. Now is the time to do it.
