this exactly. spires are good in some cases, but they are incredibly overused. a good crown will be more impressive then most if not all spires

Not if Extell is going for the height crown, in other words a taller building. If they were to make the tower taller by adding more floors or add a very large crown it would cost a huge amount more than adding a very tall spire. I mean technically Nordstrom tower is going to be the tallest tower to roof in NYC, that's a pretty big title to have already.

Don't expect the spire to go away in New York City skyscraper architecture, you're going to see this come up again.

Well, we haven't seen the spire for this one yet, in fact we haven't seen the rendering of the tower itself. And spires do serve their purpose on skyscrapers. New York's skyline is famous for it's spires, so it should come as no surprise if we do in fact get one for this tower. In fact, as long as there are skyscrapers being built, there will be spires.

But it you want to lament on spires, there's more to discuss here...

Concrete was poured for the foundation all the way to the left of the screen near the scaffolding. It's been under construction for weeks, why would someone just move it?

This is the way it was for One57. We just wait for more concrete evidence is all, it'll be moved. The photos will be the same either way.

If you want to be specific, the concrete was poured for support wall below, not for the foundation. As you can see from latest pictures, there is still a lot of rock to be removed before foundation level can be reached.

How many projects do you have in the works right now?

Mr. Barnett: We have two projects which we’ve just finished. That’s the office building, International Gem Tower, and the Hyatt Times Square. And the last one we’re doing on Riverside Drive, at One Riverside Park, and that will also be completed next year. Those five projects we got through the recession, thank God. It was a challenge.

We are also starting our wave of new projects consisting of 225 West 57th Street, a very tall building. That’s where Nordstrom’s going. We’re doing the Pathmark site downtown on South Street on the corner of Pike Slip and South Street. We’re also beginning work on 70 Charlton Street between Varick and Hudson [Streets]. We’re beginning work on East 14th Street between [Avenues] A and B. That will have very nice residential rentals and retail. We’ve done demolition there. And we’re doing 555 10th Avenue, where we’ve just about finished the foundation and are going vertical with 600 residential rental units plus some dormitory.

....What about the Art Students League of New York? Some of its members sued to block the transfer of the league’s air and cantilever rights (for $31.8 million to your firm for the tower at 225 West 57th Street), saying the price wasn’t enough. Late last month, a New York Supreme Court Justice dismissed the lawsuit.

It made no sense what they were basically saying. For the league to turn down tens of millions of dollars that they’ll never get anyhow just because of a cantilever 300 feet high—how does that make any sense? Who in their right mind would tell them to do that? My understanding is that this was just political infighting in the league by some disgruntled people who were running for office and didn’t get in, and said, “We would have done better and gotten you even more money.” Everyone can always second-guess. It’s easy to second-guess when you don’t have to deliver yourself.

I like the mayor. I supported him for a couple of years already.

I never disclose who I vote for, but I will say that I am a registered Democrat. I’ve always been a Democrat.

This is where it's always been.

You guys need to relax. In the coming months we'll be moving multiple supertall towers currently in "site prep" or pre-construction phases into construction, including: 30 Hudson, 111 W. 57th, Tower Verre, Nordstrom, and possibly 3 Hudson, 1 Manhattan West, 35 Hudson, there'll be more than enough construction to go around.

Builders race to develop sky-high condo buildings

Demand for these sky-high residences is mostly coming from international buyers and corporate bigwigs -- Chinese businessmen, hedge fund managers, Russian oil billionaires -- looking for a place to invest and bragging rights.

"The taller it is, the more prestigious it is. People want trophy homes," said Eric Trump, executive vice president for Donald's Trump's Trump Organization.

Trump should know. In 2001, his father's company developed one of the first ultra high condo buildings, Trump World Tower, on Manhattan's East Side. The building topped out at 861 feet.

..."These developers have to build at the very top of the luxury market," said Miller. "That's the only way the math works."

The floors on the upper levels produce much of the developers' profits. People are willing to pay big bucks for the views, according to Johnson.

At the buildings near New York City's Central Park, for example, higher condos can cost 1% to 2% more per floor and there's a big jump, roughly 20%, for unobstructed park views, said Miller.

I demand this be moved to the construction thread or a coup will take place uprooting NYguy from his stranglehold on NYC construction updates!
