Dear God are those like 50 foot ceilings in those interior renderings? This building raises the bar/game on so many levels.

^ now that is definately an amazing shot of the facade going in that we all wanted to see —

and those amenities — whew!

franktko Nov 17, 2017 3:49 AM

I'm suprised by the little brackets and bolts holding up the terra-cotta... can these last 50 years?
Doesn't look easy to service either, they'll be completely hidden.

LMich Nov 17, 2017 7:09 AM

Isn't this how all terra-cotta facings are done on skyscrapers?

I'm embarrassed to say I thought these were metal panels from the renderings.

It's likely all stainless steel and from the looks of it could be accessed through the seams with a hex allen wrench type tool for adjustments...

Am I wrong or is terra cotta... "cheap"?

Welcome2Boise Nov 17, 2017 11:40 PM

you're wrong. Quite the opposite actually.

^^^ (re Welcome2Boise's observation)
...Which perfectly justifies what this tower is meant to symbolize.

The alignment flaws and color variation actually add so much to the aesthetic. This is like watching the Chrysler Bulding rise!

rgarri4 Nov 19, 2017 3:57 AM

Wait what do those sky lights shown in the model look up into? Wouldn't the floor slab for the next floor be right above?

LMich Nov 19, 2017 8:07 AM

Sure, but light clearly gets into it from the side at certain times of the day. Might even be a double-floor. I don't know, but it's not entirely useless.

Skylights near the tapering crown and setbacks of the project. To insinuate the design and draw the eye. The final crown should be illuminated. I'd imagine a feint glow that will bring out the terracotta.

Say no more...

Okay, so this is an article from early '15 explaining 111's illumination; so if anyone has updated pics/whatever, I'm fine with it.

But anyhow...From NY YIMBY:

The lighting evokes jewelry at the crown and shimmer down the
cladding of this very feminine and graceful tower. Dynamic changes to the lighting are linked to the lunar cycle and visually connect the crown to the ground level.

L’O scope includes the façade lighting for both the new tower and Steinway Hall, all terraces, performance spaces in Steinway Hall, amenities areas as well as millwork in the residential units.

Almost looks like a giant chandelier.

gramsjdg Nov 20, 2017 2:19 AM

Hopefully they actually install the crown lighting, unlike One57... (for which I have yet to even hear an excuse for)

The Best Forumer Nov 20, 2017 6:27 AM

Wow... what a VERY nice tower... :)

Yeah, light would come in through the facade.
