Texas A&M Health Science Center selected Vaughn as the construction manager-at-risk for the Engineering and Health Building Renovation project in the Texas Medical Center. The existing 282,000 SF, 17-story steel frame office building will be renovated to serve as the education and training facility for Texas A&M’s new Engineering Health program. The program will be the nation’s first comprehensive educational program to fully integrate engineering into all health-related disciplines. The initiative hopes to build upon Texas A&M’s long-standing research and education presence in Houston. The $31 million project will include new gross anatomy labs, simulation labs, lecture halls, MEP infrastructure improvements, and skin improvements. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2019 and targets a final completion date of July 2020.

Texas A&M announces $550M Texas Medical Center development project

Quote:

The Texas A&M University System will build a $550 million complex in the Texas Medical Center.

Stakeholders from the A&M System and the TMC unveiled the project Feb. 20. The development will include two new towers and one renovated building near the corner of Main Street and Holcombe Boulevard in the TMC.

"Texas A&M’s rise in prominence — especially within the health care arena — is reflected with the aggressive expansion of properties near the Texas Medical Center,” Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp said in a Feb. 20 news release. “The Houston medical scene is about to see the benefits of Aggie ingenuity and our dedication to service."

In 2017, the A&M System purchased an 18-story building on 5.5 acres at 1020 Holcombe Blvd., which is being renovated to house the university's EnMed program. The two-degree program allows students to receive a master's degree in engineering from Texas A&M University and a medical doctor's degree from the Texas A&M Health Science Center. The program is run in conjunction with Houston Methodist Hospital. The university expects the renovation of the existing 18-story building to be completed this summer.

One of the newly constructed buildings will serve as student housing. The 19-story, 365,000-square-foot tower will hold 572 units and 704 beds. Priority will be given to Texas A&M medical students and Prairie View A&M nursing students, but students from other institutions will be eligible to fill the remaining units, per the release. The facility will also include a 1.2 million-square-foot parking garage with 3,444 spaces. The student housing tower is expected to be completed in June 2022.

Finally, Texas A&M will build a 30-story medical office building totaling 587,000 square feet. The tower will include a 13-story parking garage, 72,000 square feet of retail space and 8,700 square feet of green space. The 30-story tower is expected to be completed by June 2023, per the release.
