3D City Project

So, I'm starting this project about a 3D city, based in Hong Kong, but with a little bit of Miami :D I've been trying to do this in a super detailed way, but every time, I lost my inspiration or my computer crashed. So this time (and my first time on SSP) I'll make it using textures. But at the same time, I'll try to make it as realistic as possible. Some of you may have seen Pingyao's cities. Well, I'm also using those ones as a reference. I already made the terrain for the city, which would be only and island, and maybe in the future would be expanded to the other side. Made it using real Google Earth textures:

I made the first building in Sketchup with some HD textures I did myself. Then I rendered it in Kerkythea with a little bump mapping and a bit of reflection. This was the result:

-----------------------------------------

That was the first reason I posted this here. The second reason (which is related to the first), is that I want you to help me with this. SHow me your own designs and I'll make them and add it to the city. All designs are accepted (as long as they look good :D), but try to make low poly buildings. I really want to make this as big as possible!
Also, I need a name for the city. If anyone has good names, post them here, and we'll decide ;)
In case you want to make a whole plot, here's the street layout, made by Pingyao:

Hope you like it. And hope you join me :) All feedbacks are received. Cheers.

Excellent, great to have another city in here! The start is looking very promising, looking forward to see it grow.

I'm afraid I'm not able to join this project. I have very limited time for modeling and I'm too into my own city to split my time.

About the name of the city: I think it depends on where this city is located.

JMGA196 Jan 12, 2013 10:43 PM

^^ Thanks ;) Well it's a fictional place, so it could be any kind of name haha

-----------------------

First half of the city is almost ready :D I'll finish the streets maybe later today ;) If any of you guys have a name for the city, tell it to me please :)

Its a very good start! i didnt planned my city that much when i started. i would like to hel you in this project with names, designs, ideas, whatever you need. about the name i agree with vellu that it should deppend on its location but i also think that it should deppend on the city's style so maybe you should think on how your city is going to be a metropolis, a port, industrial... but if i think on a cool name i will post it. i hope i would be a good help in the future! btw: please visit my city, i also would like some opinions of my progress! :)

I few I got are
Newcoast City
Redfield
Pacific Port
Mainhill
Henferlake

See if you like one, if not, I would think in new ones :)

really good! but i think there is a mistake in the texture of the top of samsung building

verticalextropy Jan 17, 2013 5:26 PM

Hey this is looking quiet good, please keep it up!!! It's really good for some of us who are not sketching at the moment, but still always have the bug. So thanks for contributing to our passion.

Feedback? Very nice shapes on both types of buildings, keep that up and you'll have a cutting edge city. Love the street map, yes you could correct Samsung's textures, and you don't need to render every shot, post some raw shots, with lines on.
Names:
Brookfederane Tree
Flowering Selanga,
Crownesville Harbour

Vellu Jan 18, 2013 7:28 PM

Both buildings are looking good, but the Samsung Building is my favorite, though. So far the balance between tall and low buildings is much to my liking.

Is this city going to have older buildings as well or just new ones?

JMGA196 Feb 16, 2013 4:59 AM

Thanks guys :D It's been hard to get time for this...

@verticalextropy thanks for the names ;) I'll post some screenshots soon

@Vellu Maybe, although I don't have experience with classic architecture.

Anyway, here are some shots about one new complex: the National Bank Center.

150m & 100m

Looks good! I like the combination of narrow sides windowless and long all-glass sides. The base could use something to make it more distinctive, though.

Santa Martha

So I decided to relaunch this city... I stopped this because of its size (It was about 30 MG). But I found a way to purge the file so it weighted less than 10 MG.

I will post ideas, designs and updates for its progress, but I'm afraid it mightn't be totally constant since I want to focus a bit more on my other projects, although I assure you I will give my best to complete this.

This thread is also dedicated to ideas and designs that other users might have and that I could add to the city. If you have any design you want to share, do it!

I also have to say that this city will be made with textures only so I can keep the low weight. I hope you like it.

Here are some pictures of the city by now:

The shapes and heights of the buildings are in good balance. I'd like to see more variation in architectural styles, but I guess this city is quite young so it mostly has modern architecture.

With just a few more bulidings it would form a great skyline.

Well I have to say I'm impressed!
