Ron Joyce's health centre at Barton and Wellington| 23.4 m | 7 fl | Approved
Demolition fences and signs are now up. The old Tim Horton's location has already been mostly demolished as of this week, with only the eastern-most wall still remaining.
Background, from December 2015: Hamilton Spectator By Teri Pecoskie It's the end of an era for a Hamilton icon. After a century in business at the corner of Barton and Wellington streets, Kenesky Sports is closing shop. The store, kitty corner to Hamilton General Hospital, was sold to Ron Joyce in July. Owner Joel Hulsman said the Tim Hortons founder and philanthropist has plans to develop the land and an adjacent property into a multistorey medical building with retail space on the first floor. While Joyce wouldn't confirm those details, he did say through an administrator for his foundation that "it is in process and the plans are being formed." The project is not believed to be connected to Hamilton Health Sciences, where its newest building — a children's health centre just half a block away on Wellington — bears Joyce's name. Although retail operations will wrap up at the end of this month, Kenesky's will continue to manufacture goalie pads and operate its popular hockey school. Some merchandise will also be available in stores as early as April. |

I didn't think the house beside it on Barton was going too. There were still blinds in the window only a week ago and it still looked like someone lived there. I guess not...

The area is really starting to clean up, thanks in part to Ron Joyce. I hope the renaissance continues eastward into the Barton Village.

Somebody needs to talk to Sherif Khalifa over at Empire Steel about taking the rest of that horrible siding off. There is a beautiful building under there and would really make Barton look a lot better.

I have to say this corner feels so different now that those buildings are gone. I really hope something starts construction on the site soon. Now that this corner is empty, the only buildings along the South side of the street for over a block are the Tim Hortons & A&W.
On a side note, does anyone know who this property belongs to? I live in the area and I've always wondered what used to be there/if there were any plans for it. http://i.imgur.com/b5x7jYf.png?1 |
It's been empty as long as I can remember. And no surface parking. Peculiar in this city...
|
^ Perhaps this site and the Kenesky/House/Tim Horton's site on the other corner will be developed in unison?
It would be fun if there were an upstart coffee chain pilot outlet featured in this new development. I'd like to see what Mr. Joyce's vision would be if he ran such an enterprise in 2016, as a privately held company, where he could call the shots again. |

Coincidentally, development on this site is moving again... Demolition permits have been requested for these houses below: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pm...=w1557-h754-no (255 and 257 Wellington N., respectively) And if you read the documents posted on the City's site, they include the following: Quote:

I was reading the planning committee meeting notes, and noticed that 255 and 257 Wellington Not were approved for demolition. I will say that the fine of $20,000 if nothing is built is quite measly. There should be larger fines for not doing anything with a vacant property.
Any news with the corner across the street from this? |
There was a backhoe brought to the site this morning. Does anyone have any other updates?

https://secureservercdn.net/198.71.2...on-Image-1.png Seven (7) storey mixed use building with 845.6 square metres of commercial space, 749.5 square metres of office space and 79 residential dwelling units. In addition, 97 parking spaces located at grade behind the building and within an underground parking structure are proposed. |
What's up with all these suburban buildings being built right outside the downtown. This totally kills the streetscape along Barton to James. It's a dead zone as is, but has loads of potential, even with the wall of hospital.

Hopefully ground floor is all retail
