Cask Patio is fantastic these days.

Lots of patios open and busy this evening.

Half of Cactus Club's east patio is a fail because it's completely enclosed in glass.

Craft's patio may open this weekend - they were delayed by the City.

Bricco was wall-to-wall hot cougars tonight! If I was dressed better, I would have gone in.

GreenSPACE May 23, 2014 5:27 PM

Cask and Barrel - new flower planters are pretty nice! I wish all businesses would try this hard.

Susan and Wayne do such much awesome with that place...

I noticed that the amount of pedestrian activity on Jasper at noon today was quite remarkable. Food trucks parked at various locations, patios busy. Man, things are picking up downtown.

Interesting... couldn't get away for lunch until 1:30... most trucks were packed up... not because they wanted to go, think they ran out of food... crazy today! more patios needed. more food trucks needed.... at least on the nice days!

Public House reopening under new ownership
http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/10...dmonton-crowd/

Edmonton business owners are breathing new life into a downtown restaurant that has been left vacant for several months.

The Public House, which sits at the corner of Jasper Avenue and 108 Street, will open once again but under new ownership.

“Our plan is to re-open up as The Public House for now and then in a year we will do a massive overhaul,” said Sam Moukhaiber, owner of the RoseBowl Hospitality Group.

As the owner of Rouge Lounge and operating businesses in the city for 36 years, Moukhaiber and his group plan to do a “lipstick makeover” to the currently vacant downtown building by lightening the interior, but also by bringing new food and cocktails to the location.

Gourmet style pizza, lunchtime buffets with gourmet dishes and cooking outside on one of the largest patios in the city are all part of Moukhaiber’s plan to bring the downtown work crowd, as well as the nighttime foodies, the great food they deserve.

“I’m a foodie and I have great food,” he said.

The Public House will re-open under new ownership tentatively on June 14.

Me and my better half went to Catcus Club Cafe in downtown this evening. We had a good meal and noticed not a single panhandler in sight. Those folks are getting harder to find!

Coldrsx May 24, 2014 3:59 PM

Good to see it open again, will be interesting to see how this turns out. Best part is their patio being open again.

I don't get it. Must be fun to stand in line for an hour?

I picked up some of that fresh Icelandic cod from Ocean Odyssey at the City Market and bbq'd that instead while enjoying the crowd from high above....seriously delicious. it wasn't even frozen, I don't recall ever having fish that good locally.

Coldrsx May 26, 2014 2:25 PM

^We plan to pick some up as well soon, sounds awesome.

Yeah, dont get the standing in lines like that... but great to see so many people downtown and the spillover was fantastic for the area.

Daveography May 26, 2014 3:45 PM

^ Because it's fun when you're there with friends (and meet friends there randomly) and it's good food.

We actually have a system, if you go with multiple people: Each stand in line for a truck and get something for each of you. First to get food delivers to everyone else, then stands in line at the next truck people want food from. That way you all get to eat something, which makes waiting a lot easier.

Sailin' On, Smokehouse, La Poutine, and Big City Sandwiches: all excellent. I think La Poutine was my favourite of the evening with the chili poutine.

itom 987 May 27, 2014 2:51 AM

Chilli poutine was exactly what I ordered! My gamble paid off well! :)

I agree. Went, excited to try some new food trucks, and was flabbergasted at how long some of the lines went. Just went to Blue Plate instead and took photos of the lines afterwards :).

That's a great idea.

Chili poutine:slob:

Hallsy's Toupee May 27, 2014 3:36 AM

I wasn't going to bother waiting 1 or 2 hours in line at a food truck I can visit any other time of the week.

Black Star May 27, 2014 3:42 AM

True.

Last year we just got there early and hit up 4 truck stat.

At the 104 street committee meeting this morning the business representatives that showed up indicated that they all had very successful evenings....which is very good. Having these business owners recognize that these events that draw competitors can also draw huge crowds to support them is very important.

Coldrsx May 27, 2014 2:48 PM

Exactly. The spillover impact was CONSIDERABLE on places along 104st, 103st and jasper +2 blocks or so.

Hallsy's Toupee May 27, 2014 4:40 PM

Speaking of which, anyone been to The Burg lately? Recent urbanspoon reviews aren't looking good.

Coldrsx May 27, 2014 4:42 PM

Service is poor...

Prairie boy May 27, 2014 5:03 PM

My partner and I had breakfast at Madison's Grill in the union bank inn, very delicious. My partner is an eggs benny aficionado, and hates packaged hollaindaise sauce. They make it, which is great!!! Can anyone recomend awesome eggs Benny in the city??? Sadly, on another note, since almost everyone left, the Wildflower Restaurant has gone downhill...

Mycroft May 27, 2014 5:06 PM

Cafe Bicyclette does an interesting benny - more of a brioche with a somewhat spicy dill hollandaise. It's a small portion for $12, but very tasty.

Hallsy's Toupee May 27, 2014 5:14 PM

I've always liked the Florentine Benny at the Blue Plate Diner - which I don't see on their brunch menu anymore.

Coldrsx May 27, 2014 5:15 PM

^^ NY Bagel Cafe on gateway and 84ave is reputed to have one.

Prairie boy May 27, 2014 6:10 PM

Thanks!!! We were at the Blue Plate over a year ago when we lived in GP, and it wasn't very good...I will give them another chance :)

NY Bagel Cafe seems to be popular, will have to check it out!

rapid_business May 27, 2014 7:00 PM

I've never been a Blue Plate fan. Always average. Sugar Bowl does an interesting Eggs Benny, but the corn bread is a little too sweet for my liking. Culina at the Muttart does a good Eggs Benny. Tiramisu does an awesome bacon breakfast sandwich, but that is a different story.

Eggs Flo at the High Level Diner was always a good bet on weekends!

It was interesting the contrast between say, 104 St and 100 St.

I used to be a big fan, but after a bad customer service experience, didn't bother for years. This past Saturday was my first time there in 4 years and the service was pretty good considering how busy they were and the food was a lot better than I remember.

Given that it's been raining most of the week - no.

Such a difficult question. For many - its where ever they are cheap or big or have lots of flavour or breaded or not breaded, or deep fired or baked. I have eaten wings every where in this City. I have a few places I like for wings - but they are not always the places I like to drink beer and hang out at. For Example:

Boston Pizza bakes their wings and they are large and good. They serve my draught beer (Canadian). But the BP downtown lounge sucks.

Sherlocks fry their wings, without batter, a handful of flavours, medium size and a great pub that pretty much everyone loves (and the sunnny patio). They have a Tuesday 1/2 price special.

The Pint has pigeon sized fried wings, lots of flavours, and they are on special - I forget the days...eat early before the usual crowd arrives :sly:

Out of downtown Hooters is a great place for Wings - they do all types there, serve good beer in an awe inspiring bar/resto :D

Here is a website that you can save on your smart phone as a "web app" - and scroll for todays Wing specials around town. You can sort by rating / comments. I have had the puny 9 cent sparrow wings at Smittys and you get what you pay for lol.

http://wingsnbeer.com/news_items

edit" I see the sparrow wings are now 14 cents and not 9.

Prairie boy May 31, 2014 12:43 AM

Lol, thanks so much!!!
