More debris came down from the tower after tonight's severe storm with tornado warnings for most of the region.

Debris falls under same Midtown building where spinning crane caused havoc

https://www.nydailynews.com/resizer/...2NWOAWUVUM.JPG

By JOHN ANNESE
NOV 15, 2020

Quote:

Falling glass cascaded onto the ground Sunday night under the same Midtown skyscraper where a spinning crane sent debris plummeting to the pavement last month, officials said.

Chunks of thick glass fell to the ground at W. 57th St. and Sixth Ave. at about 8:55 p.m., as powerful winds tore through the city.

Firefighters secured 111 W. 57th St., an 85-story luxury apartment tower, an FDNY spokesman said, as police shut down Sixth Ave. from 56th to 58th Sts., and 57th St. from Fifth to Seventh Aves.

On Oct. 29, strong winds from the remnants of Hurricane Zeta caused a crane attached to the building to “weathervane,” or spin in circles. The crane’s ball-and-hook at the end of the hoist cable also swung wildly, smashing into the building and knocking off metal debris.
Quote:

The city hit the crane company, U.S. Crane and Rigging, with a $10,000 violation, public records show.

The Billionaire’s Row building, which is believed to be the world’s most slender skyscraper, is to be the second-tallest residential building in the city and the western hemisphere. The tallest residential building in the city is Central Park Tower, further west on W. 57th St.

^ very nice, this crown closeup is exactly what i have wanted to see.

i still can't figure out what is going on there and has yet to be done?

it's really turning out to be a challenge that is for sure.

I was looking to see if I could find any visible damage (without getting too close). But couldn't really tell. I know they have been removing the damaged parts. Not sure where the glass fell from.

eXodius Nov 17, 2020 7:01 PM

Looks like a lot of the glass near the crane had to be removed/redone as you can see some panels that were there before are missing :( Hopefully it'll be externally complete by January and lit up soon!!

You're right, you have to look at a before and after to see it.

eXodius Nov 19, 2020 8:40 PM

Looks like it's gonna be at least 2 months of a setback to get those panes recreated and shipped to NY! I suppose CPT will at least be externally done by the end of 2020 if we're lucky! Still can't wait

A New York Penthouse 1,000 Feet Above Street Level Fetches $50 Million-Plus
The contract for an apartment at 111 West 57th Street is one of the biggest signed in New York since the start of the pandemic

BY KATHERINE CLARKE
DECEMBER 8, 2020

Quote:

A penthouse apartment at 111 West 57th Street, an under-construction ultra-skinny tower on New York’s Billionaires’ Row, has gone into contract for over $50 million, according to a person familiar with the transaction. The deal, signed in early November, is one of the priciest publicly disclosed contracts to have been signed in New York since the onset of the pandemic.

The development’s offering plan lists the unit’s asking price at $57 million. JDS Development’s Michael Stern, one of the building’s developers, confirmed the deal but declined to comment on the exact sale price or the identity of the buyer.

In the spring, Mr. Stern said that contracts for two other units asking roughly $30 million had been signed at the condominium tower between March and June. "We continue to be pleased with the sales performance," Mr. Stern said in a statement. "Covid has demonstrated the flight to quality real estate and the enduring strength of New York City."
Quote:

The apartment that most recently went into contract is one of several "penthouses" at the building. Located at an elevation of about 1,000 feet, it is 7,103 square feet and has four bedrooms and 5½ bathrooms, according to the offering plan.

The terracotta-and-bronze tower, one of several new supertall spires on the south side of Central Park, is known locally as the Steinway Building because it incorporates the former Steinway & Sons piano store building into its design. It is being developed by JDS in partnership with Property Markets Group and Spruce Capital Partners. There are about 14 apartments inside the Steinway building and 46 units in the connected tower above.

Douglas Elliman leads sales at the building.

I would rather be lower down & feel like I'm in the park rather than above it, although there are plenty of prewars for that. I wonder if any multi unit floors have been combined lower down and if that would be cheaper than the same square footage near the top.

I don't think there are any multi unit floors in this building, except maybe the original Steinway.

There's one two floor unit at the full size floorplate about halfway up the tower and I believe the top five units are all multi floor as the building tapers ... two two floor units and two three floor units at the very very top.

the integrated flag pole up there looks like a spire to me.

yeah i'm going to call it a spire.

pianowizard Dec 10, 2020 6:10 PM

^ Since it serves a function, it does not add to the structural height.

Zerton Dec 10, 2020 6:14 PM

It would be awesome if they put a flag pole on each side.

What I mean is that there are no multi unit floors.

Visionist Dec 11, 2020 8:31 PM

I guess we usually talk about multi floor units instead of multi unit floors. Still, that duplex halfway up sounds ideal for me in this case. So long as it has a double height living room, a must for me.

As if I can afford it right now lmao.

We do. But that's because most towers aren't this skinny. It really is as thin as they say. The most you get is one per floor.

They need to fix this before somebody gets minced.
