There are currently 3 intercity bus routes crossing the ON-QC border...again with a very limited schedule and I imagine they would go through the check-point at the border. (not like the buses would be very full either!)

And if you're also considering BC: There are 2 passenger trains a week and 2 bus routes.

Take a look at at a map and there's not that many points that would have to be monitored even considering road and air (see my previous post) With the lock-down just not that many traveling.

Truck, rail freight and essential travel would continue.

Not talking the International Border here. That's been in effect for over a year now.

It's certainly not impossible. All I'm saying is there a lot of logistics at play in doing a travel ban. It terms of BC, a few cities like Golden or Invermere that are close to the border and see large numbers of visitors from Alberta wouldn't be too thrilled with a ban.

All in all, this is probably something that would have been better done a year ago when less people were traveling.

The international border comment was in regards to LO044's post.

Revelstoke and Fernie had outbreaks from Albertans so not everyone would shed a tear if the border closed.

I heard on the radio this morning that the bridges from Hull into Ottawa have 1 hour backups to get into Ontario...not surprisingly.

A friend of mine in the US says that the US/Canada border is going to open soon. I’ve not heard a peep about it from Trudeau. The border closure is set to expire in two days. Has there been any talk of letting the restriction lapse or renewing it?

Will probably get renewed at least one more time. I imagine in the coming weeks/month the US will start putting pressure on Canada to re-open the border.

Last I had heard, there are potential plans to re-open (at least the US side) from mid-May, but who knows.

A few countries this week (Greece, France) announced they'll be allowing vaccinated Americans to visit this summer, but so far no mention of Canadians (aside from Iceland).

I cannot see that happening with cases increasing in ON, BC and other provinces to a lesser degree.

Even the boarder states are seeing some up tick.

Exactly. Michigan is having daily case counts currently that are higher than all of Canada during our 3rd wave. The US is jumping the gun. Even though the US are advancing well with vaccinations, their 4th wave that they're currently in, is just as bad as their 2nd wave.

hollywoodcory Apr 20, 2021 4:29 PM

Border restrictions extended another month to May 21.

Time will tell if the US will agree beyond this. Around late May, perhaps enough of both countries will be vaccinated enough they could re-open the border to vaccinated travelers.

As this is airborne I always wondered how long the virus can now survive in the air.

We have changed the way we ventilate some buildings but it would be interesting to see how truly far the various versions of this virus can travel.

8 numbered roads:
Going north (logging roads not included):
1. Highway 3 – Crowsnest Pass
2. Highway 93 to Radium
3. Highway 1 – TransCanada
4. Highway 16 from Jasper
5. Road 671 (Kelly Lake)
6. Highway 43 (Demmitt)
7. Highway 49 (Briar Ridge)
*. Peace River (canoes only?)
8. Road 64 (to Fort St John)
Plus a few unnumbered roads north of Fort St John

shreddog Apr 20, 2021 8:35 PM

Actually, today it's only 7 since Hwy 1 is closed until May 14. I wonder if they'll extend the construction closure?

JetBlue announced its first Canadian destination this morning, with plans to fly JFK/BOS-YVR in Summer 2022.

DrNest Apr 21, 2021 3:59 PM

Interesting route choice. I would have speculated that JFK/BOS to YYZ/YUL would have been more in line with the JetBlue's operations to start a route into Canada.
I'll wonder if they'll expand and include snowbirds flights to Florida or Arizona?
Either way, it's good to see another airline planning to start flights into Canada.

Pricing and yields would be a bloodbath on YYZ/YUL-FLL.
Pre-covid rouge was running up to 5 daily 767s on YUL-FLL, sometimes a 6th 319 flight during peak travel times.

I just can't see how they'd make profit, taxes, landing fees.

I could be wrong.

Looks like AA is adding YYZ-BOS. No other details provided just "intends", so perhaps this too will come in S22.
https://news.aa.com/news/news-detail...4/default.aspx

As for Arizona, the only US carrier I see making it work is AA, as the B6 partnership mostly covers the Northeast. WS basically dominates Western Canada-PHX.

Coldrsx Apr 21, 2021 5:14 PM

AA is calling back all of their pilots.

New York to Vancouver makes a lot of sense especially if they do an early morning departure that arrives into Vancouver in time for the mid-day flights to Asia.

Pre-covid there was the Cathy Pacific 747/777 doing a late evening flight and the Air Canada 787 out of Newark that was timed to connect to flights to Australia and New Zeeland. I think Delta also had or was planning to have a seasonal flight on that route.

I have been on the Air Canada flight a few times and lots of Australian accents on that flight.

In summer there is also all the cruise ship traffic heading through Vancouver. JetBlue would be a recognized brand with that crowd out of the New York and Boston area.

Not just calling back all their pilots, but could start hiring again later this year. UA as well. The US airlines should see a significant recovery this summer,.

I'd say the Canadian carriers are about a year or so behind them in terms of recovery.
