First off, the Air Canada staff should have tried to do something to resolve this and ensure he felt safe.

I don't see how calling the Air Canada call centre is going to help in this situation. Spend an hour or 10 hours it is going to amount to the same, the call centre staff can play with the reservation but they are not the ones who are going to handle handing out vouchers etc.

Hotels generally don't like minors as guests and this past week in Toronto the weather has been incredibly bad with lots of cancellations. It is hard to find a hotel room near the airport. There is a good chance sleeping in the airport may have been the best solution. Unfortunate as it is.

I wonder if the 15 year old has been camping on his own. The chances of being attached by a bear in the woods around Thunder Bay are probably higher than a mugger in a highly policed major airport

Oh boy. Time to join the stampede of people looking to cash out their points.

If the mother was genuinely concerned about her unaccompanied minor flying with AC, she should have paid for AC's unaccompanied minor service. Probably too cheap to do so, and now she feels entitled. Give me a break!

Over 10,000 young travellers fly unaccompanied with us each year. And with our Unaccompanied Minor service, every one of them receives the best care from our highly trained staff from the moment they arrive at airport until they reach their destination.
•The Unaccompanied Minor service can be purchased but is considered optional for youth ages 12 to 17 who are travelling alone.

So in other words they might build a new terminal building. That's a big difference from a new airport.

Glad that I used my Aeroplan points last summer for high-season TATL travel with short notice. I switched to United a year ago and haven't looked back. The different between using United points and Aeroplan points is day and night.

If there was a United-affiliated credit card available in Canada I would have switched a long time ago too. Combining points from travel, the credit card and other sources helps to accumulate points much faster.

Agreed. The frequent offers of Chase United Mileage Plus cards and their inevitable, 30,000, 50,000, and recently 70,000 mile sign-up bonuses are just a cruel joke.

Since it was a connecting flight that is not a permitted option.

My own personal experience with AC on IROP is AC staff generally try to be helpful when they are allowed to. The rules are forever changing. Some of my own examples.

On a flight from Heathrow to Halifax (connecting in Halifax to Ottawa and Saskatoon). When the aircraft gets near Halifax there is a problem with the runway and they have to divert, end up in Toronto. Head up to the 35K checkin counter to try to get rebooked. Check-in agent says, "I am not allowed to help you, you must try phoning the call centre, if after 20 minutes you can't get through then and only then am I permitted to rebook you. there is a bank of direct phones over in the corner" Spend 20 minutes on hold and then back into the lineup again. At that point they playing games.

That is just one of many personal examples. The solution is to empower staff a bit more and have them focus on solving customer problems.

In the case of this kid who was stuck in the airport, my guess would be the AC staff probably had more IROP to handle and long lines, this guys likely just got bounced around as staff tried to deal with him as quickly as possible.

As more neo's are delivered, I would imagine so.

LeftCoaster May 12, 2017 8:53 PM

Great news for YUL. Hope to see more Canadian cities follow, though fro YVR and YYZ I'd like to see something like Monterrey or Guadalajara.

The issue is Years ago AC agents had power to make changes and help people at will go above and beyond guidelines. Than customers complained saying there was no single system and some people got more help vs others. So AC changed and now have a hard rule book and we as consumers complained they wanted one.

I don't know what the answer is for this, but the end of the day people will complain and there will also be a certain part of the population that will never be happy.

Stellar Q1 for YYZ. As has been the case for several quarters now, total volume growth exceeds volume growth at Canada's other big three combined. Same thing for total volume growth overall.

jmt18325 May 17, 2017 9:17 PM

If this kind of growth continues, Toronto could break the 50M passenger barrier in 2018.

YUL +8.1%, YTD +6.0%.

YYC +1.2%, YTD +1.07%

YEG +3.3%, YTD +0.1%

YOW +0.6%, YTD -0.5%

YWG YTD +5.5%

Transat to start seasonal YUL/YYZ-TPA and YUL/YYZ-SJU service for winter 2017-18. Several other routes see increases as well.
