Question TransAustin, is Columbia Tower really 47 stories? I thought it was around 20-22? Or am I confused?

With continued remarks the last few years about a shortage in the city for hotel rooms and the convention center expansion now picking up some speed I wonder if more hotels will see the green light sooner and maybe a few might try and go bigger?
I know the Hilton hotel expansion by the convention center with its second tower looks to be the obvious to get going sooner now and the last I heard it was still being looked at to be built over the current parking structure there but has anyone heard what it's height is expected to be? Also has anyone ever heard more of the Marriott hotels at the convention center site plans for expansion? They announced a few years back now some big plans to have a couple of large meeting space rooms built for conventions to be added to the current site but nothing since that I'm aware of. Did these plans die or just waiting out a tough economy? |

^^ I'm excited to see this project open. I haven't been to that area in a year and a half or so (I live two miles away), so it will be nice to see what's up. I hope the seaport village redevelopment works out as well. I just wish they would pick one theme, instead of the western/spanish/cape code scheme that's been going on.

I know the Marriott wanted a third tower long ago but I was thinking of any news on this:
San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina Plans $182 Million Improvement Project Contact: John Gilmore (619) 686-7206 on September 07 2010. The San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina, is planning a $182 million major remodeling that includes replacement of its main ballroom and exhibit hall. The work will begin in early 2011 and is expected take up to 20 months to complete. As part of the extensive renovation, the Port of San Diego has conducted a detailed review of the project and concluded the makeover will have no significant adverse impact on the environment. Several elements were examined, including the project’s impact on traffic and transportation, land use and air pollution. San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina Improvement Project Documents The public may comment on the Port’s draft findings beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, through Oct. 7, 2010. The document is available for review at the Port of San Diego and the Downtown Library. The 25-story Marriott, which is located on prime waterfront land at 333 West Harbor Drive (map) in downtown San Diego, is one of the city’s signature hotels. It is operated by Host Hotels & Resorts LP and features 1,305 rooms, 55 suites, dozens of meeting rooms and a 446-slip marina. The makeover includes a new 40,000 square foot ballroom and a 40,000-square-foot exhibit hall. The new ballroom and exhibit hall would be constructed at the existing Marriott Hall conference building adjacent to Harbor Drive. There also are plans to construct an outdoor event area, a pedestrian promenade, and extensive landscaping improvements. The Port District’s draft finding, called a mitigated negative declaration, is available at the office of the Port District Clerk, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101 (map). The draft may be viewed online and at the San Diego Downtown Central Library, 820 E St., San Diego CA 92101. Here's a link to the original article: http://www.portofsandiego.org/real-e...t-project.html After 3 years and not a peep? Is this dead now or something that may get going again with the convention center expansion? The amount of space available so close to the convention center would have a nice big positive effect on big shows like comic con. |

But this is still a totally different project than the original proposal that SDFan was talking about...although I don't have the renderings, that proposal called for a tower that was exactly the same color and shape on top of what is now the main entrance and fountain in between the two marina towers now. It would have completely walled off our bayfront with monolithic blue towers. |
