Here's the blurb on the project, which will have 600+ hotel rooms and be ~300,000 square feet. Preliminary rendering, as well.

That isn't the rendering. They bought the approved site plans from Glenwood, so I assume they will use Glenwood's development plan.

I think that pic is just some weird beach hotel somewhere else in their portfolio, but maybe they posted the "Times Square" label.

Awesome! I did an elevation in MS Paint when I was 11 that looks just like that!

It can only be a joke. These guys insist on building garbage near Times Square.

600-room hotel to check in west of Times Square
Spanish hotel developer RIU Hotels and Resorts begins work on a site at the eastern end of Restaurant Row,
on the corner of West 46th Street and Eighth Avenue. Start comes a year after RIU paid $111 million for the site.

The Mallorca-based hotelier RIU Hotels & Resorts is nearly done demolishing a derelict residential property at 301 W. 46th St. on the multiparcel site. The site includes an adjacent vacant lot on Eighth Avenue just north of that building as well as one to the west along Restaurant Row. According to previous reports, RIU plans to build 600-room, roughly 300,000-square-foot tower. Currently work on the five-story 301 W. 46th St., an eyesore whose boarded up windows, ground floor porn shop and graffiti scrawled exterior made it look like a throwback to the avenue's gritty days decades ago, has reduced it to its second floor.

Sixty-year-old, family-owned RIU purchased the site for $111 million from Glenwood Management, which had acquired the property's debt during the downturn in 2011. Glenwood took control of the parcel because the mortgage was in default.

The tower will be one of many that has sprung up on the fast-changing avenue in recent years. In recent months, Boston Properties finished 250 W. 55th St., a large new office tower that will house white-shoe law firms Morrison & Foerster and Kaye Scholer and has boosted the avenue's credentials as a destination for office tenants.

If the 29-story version was going to have ~150 rooms, then a 600-room version could be seriously huge, couldn't it?

It's only a fraction of the size of Gary Barnett's planned development on 8th Avenue. This will be 300,000 sf.

I doubt it will look like that. That's a pic of one of their Spanish hotels superimposed in NYC.

I have no idea what the hotel will look like, but not that. It doesn't even make sense how it looks, and couldn't sit like that on 8th Ave.

I'm happy some news popped up about this because I was dreading having to search back for the thread to make a comment, but I walked past the other day to grab coffee (my job is a block east on the Square), and I saw construction vehicles in active demolition. The buildings appeared to be more than half-gone...I'd say this could be above ground by Q1 2014 if they move quickly.

While the current renderings aren't spectacular, it's certainly better than what was on the site before.

The design is no great shakes as it is but why do a one story base on the Eighth Ave side and expose the neighbor's blank wall?

You really have to wonder about these architects nowadays.

Awful. The last buildings constructed in the 8th Avenue are depressing (Except the 250 West Street).

Yes, the lot is big.

I like the multiple facades in the prelim render. Taken up to anything ±650', this will have an authoritative presence indeed. Less can be more if done right, which to me this almost is.
That said, they *really* should take that one-story section right out. Why not just take the facade with the random squares all the way to the right-hand corner of the building? The offending structure is hidden and all's well.
