Just hasn’t been a priority for Canada (much to my frustration) ;). BTW - The Feds should be funding 75% of TCH system upgrades IMO. |
It would be good to get more Fed funding for long inter-provincial routes.
I wish we could stop comparing our situation to places with shorter routes between significantly larger population/economic centres: esp., US and Europe. |
This is a little off topic, but in light of the wildfire situation, is it possible (or recommended) to drive through the Interior? Basically traveling from Alberta to the Lower Mainland. I just noticed the Coquhalla is closed between Merritt and Hope and there are other fires near Sicamous and Three Valley.
|
The interior is under two crises: Covid and wildfire. So, it depends upon how important your trip is, and if there is a safe route.
Remember, during a crisis like this there is a strain on all aspects of life. It's not just about evacuees and firefighters: every system is strained. For example, hotels are straining, not just to accommodate evacuees, but all sorts of officials who are needed for management and logistics. The fuel system is strained. The hospital system, the police, transport, etc. are all strained. YOU DON'T WANT TO GET INTO A POSITION WHERE YOU UNNECESSARILY ADD TO THAT LOAD. So, check your odds and priorities before you decide. (Here is how I look at it: I mountain bike, but during Covid and the strain on our paramedics, ambulances, and hospitals, I make a serious effort to make sure I don't end up in an Emerg. because of my 'sport.' I stay off difficult/risky trails, and ride conservatively and with caution.) |

You can turn off onto Hwy 99 from Hwy 1 and get to Vancouver via Whistler.

Another fatal crash occurred east of Revelstoke. Condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
===== So many fatal collisions have happened there. Which parts are the worst spots on that stretch?? |

That part is not bad at all. |
The fall closure for Kicking Horse Phase 4 is in effect until Dec 1.

I’ve been wondering:
Why does Crowsnest Highway have 4 lanes in the middle of Manning Park? Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but the location seems random to me. https://goo.gl/maps/wE14QQmVEC1pJcmt7 Above is the western limit of the 4 lanes, separate from those between Hope and west entrance to Manning Park. |

SO what does everyone think abou the current state of LML and southern interior highways?
I think from best condition to worst we're looking at: 1. Highway3 2. Highway99 3. Highway 1 4. Highway 5/8 I don't see how highway 5 and 8 are open until 2022/2023 |

The 4 lane stretches come in handy with other road closures occurring. |
Highway 1 finally reopens today from Lytton to Spences bridge.
https://www.tranbc.ca/wp-content/upl...4wnbsmZmz69fPM |
Coquihalla's planned to reopen to regular traffic starting tomorrow, however be prepared for the trip to take an extra 45 minutes to an hour due to lane reductions.
|
It is remarkable they have been able to open both routes this week.
Now the real engineering and design can begin. Have they floated the idea of reinstating the toll on the Coq? Gotta pay for this some how. |
Looks like the province spent about $1 million to install not one but TWO new traffic signals in Princeton, a town that previously had zero. One is obviously at the 5A and 3 intersection, and the other will be just north of there, where 5A turns off the main street to bypass the downtown.
Improvements are coming to the intersection of 97 and 3A in Kaleden too. Not sure about the details at this time, but I'm guessing a protected T intersection. Probably not a signal and definitely not a roundabout unless they dropped 97 to a 50kph zone through there. That one is sure a sketchy intersection! Awesome news about the Coquihalla and Lytton to Spences Bridge. Hopefully the Jackass Mountain stretch is open soon too, then Hwy 1 will be fully passable. |

Kelowna's growth requires a second Okanagan Lake bridge
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/kelo...an-lake-bridge So, to March what is seen in the rest of the developed world this is what a 10 to 15 year highway / transportation plan should look like for Kelowna and the surrounding area: https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...p-1024x595.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...s-1024x490.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...l-1024x475.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...p-1024x542.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...p-1024x475.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...p-1024x473.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...p-1024x633.jpg Almost mockingly this is what is actually planned over the next 10 to 15 years: https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...n-1024x542.jpg https://images.dailyhive.com/2022042...p-1024x473.jpg Dear province of B.C., please higher me as your transportation planner! |
That’s really frustrating / depressing.
Thanks for posting all those plans, I wish they would act on the ones with the new alignment & bridge for 97. |

There was studies done in the late 90s on a second crossing and it's not too surprising that even back then they didn't have an appetite for it. |

Beware of the TCH WEST of Golden. They are blasting by Quartz Creek Staging Area, starting at 7pm. I got caught there on Weds night and had to wait 90 minutes to start moving, versus the advertised 30 minutes.
It looked like they blasted a bit more rock than planned and had to clean it off the highway before they started letting people through. |
No announcement, just an article on twinning the final 40kms of TCH through Yoho NP in BC:
