Let's see. I think the green covered building in the first photo is going to be Golf Town or something like that. Gap or Banana Republic is also supposed to go in that block once the rest is built.
The second building at the other end is going to be Dollarama and Bulk Barn I heard. The third photo of the wooden structure on the airport side in the Field Power Centre land is going to be a new Harvey's Restaurant. The building on the Walmart parking lot next to Swiss Chalet is a new TD Bank. The last one is an extension to the Canadian Blood Services building? Quote:

Jeez, fantastic, thank you! That's where Harvey's is going to be? Excellent. I used to work at a Harvey's, lol... I can't remember if it was Corner Brook or Moncton, though.

This website gives more detail and some visuals.

Brilliant, thank you, JCE!
EDIT: Updated my post with info from you and Arrakis! :) |
Ahh thanks JCE. I was looking for this schematic but couldnt find it.

awesome!
you can see how much is going on in the area and it is only including that small corner behind Dominion here are the "Renderings/photos" for the development so I guess this is what they will look like :) http://thompsoncentres.com/Images/golf.jpg http://thompsoncentres.com/Images/banana.jpg |
Yeah it will be nice to see Harvey's back in St. John's again. I was saddened when they closed their Mount Pearl restaurant years ago on Topsail Rd at the top of Commonwealth. (Currently Vogue Optical)

If only I cared that much for Golf.

I love the fascade on that Banana Republic store. Very Newfoundland-meets-New England.
It'll be right next to the Golf Town building above. |
Hey guys, has anyone heard if Target is going to build onto the Zellers building once Zellers moves out? It's quite small for a Target store. There is a good chunk of land though on the side between Zellers and the Kent store to expand on if needed which would propbably be smart. I would say Target once established in St. John's will end up building a new bigger store in the west end also. Most likely in the new power centre in Southlands area once that gets going. Lets hope.
|
Yeah... the west end is definitely where it's at these days. I'm surprised, really, that their first location isn't out there.

It's is difficult to say what size Target stores will be since they have never been in Canada before. When Wal-Mart first came to Canada in 94 they opened a string of stores in Woolco locations that were far below the standards of their American stores. Our Stephenville Wal-Mart is less than 60,000 sq.ft., which I believe makes it the smallest in Canada and one of the few original stores still operating. The Corner Brook Target will be the same size as the current Zellers since there is no way to expand, unless they go up. Target wants to be in competition with Wal-Mart, eventually they'll have a Target store up against every Wal-Mart in the province. That could take 10-15 years of slow, well conducted expansion. |
Not sure what the plans are but council did approve the "Target Retail Store Site Plan" in mid November as seen on the development permits list. (on page 11)

I would say though once they are all opened in Canada, they would start building their own stores much like Walmart did.
My prediction is that once Target is established in Canada, Sears days are numbered Canada and will eventually close. So don't be surprised if you eventually see a Target at Avalon Mall some day that is, if they don't build a store up near Kelsey's Walmart. Quote:

Showcase
With Showcase now gone, it's only a matter of time until Jump+ opens up.
|
I find it hard to believe that Showcase thinks it's going to do better business at the Village Mall rather than the Avalon Mall. I am sure the rent is cheaper at the Village but really, do you think they will are going to last by doing this move. Showcase already closed once at the Village Mall several years ago and that's when they had major anchor tenants like Sears and Walmart.
I think Jump+ will need a bit more space than what Showcase is vacating. I wonder if Jump+ will go in the Athlete's World space when that closes? Quote:

Theatres Coming Soon

But they're not even started construction of the theatres, are they? How can they possibly be opening later this year if they aren't even started?? :sly:
I'll believe it when I see it! |
I can just picture Townie driving around to all of our various construction sites with a loudspeaker saying, "Come on, guys, hurry up! Faster!"
It'd be awesome. :D |
Haha, well somebody's got to crack the whip, why not me?? That's funny because that is something I can totally see myself doing :haha:

Totally true. I drop in there from time to time when in the mall. I just wanna see the item as seen on tv in person and usually never have any intention of purchasing anything from there. I would bet TV Showcase will be gone from the Village Mall within the year.

Sounds cool then. I would rather see a nice little Apple Store instead but I guess this is as close as we are gonna get for now.

Just heard that as of January 26th, the Sony Store in the Avalon Mall will be closing.

Oh no. That was a solid store in the mall. Always a great place to stop and stare if you were stuck in the mall while the game was on :P

Maybe that was the problem. Too many people looking and not buying. They prob browse and then go to Costco or Best Buy to purchase. Too bad, it was a classy store.

sony is shutting down lots of its stores seems they want to shift focus away from their retail - they started shutting down stores in 2011

Aw..... I liked the Sony store! That's too bad. Oh well, it would be such a perfect location for an apple store!! (We can dream!)

On the topic of the Avalon Mall, there is now a Melanie Lyne store on the bottom level next to sears. Don't know much about this store other than it is another womens fashion store, but I do recall seeing it in other cities.

here's that map of the feild power centre
https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...96061215_n.jpg this is what was released for the southlands just for comparison: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...99034038_n.jpg how can two of the same type of developments be allowed to be so different in the same city? why doesn't council try to encourage them to make "retail villages" and more pedestrian friendly orientations to the stavanger drive area? NOTE: there are about 20 buildings in the Feild power centre (all shown stages) and about 35 locations in the southlands/ glencrest development in STAGE 1. (This will be posted in the east end thread as well) I wonder what stores will be opening in the 35 retail location in the first phase of the Southlands/ Glencrest development? There is already quite a bit near by on the other side of the highway in Mount Pearl!.. possibly many new stores? (oh and of course a new Empire theatres) |
Quote:
|
it's a lot of stores being built in the near future :) I feel like the retail in Kelsey didnt get a fair kick at the can .. not near as much up there .. and now they are just building a bunch of office buildings
|
So stores that will not be likely to open in the Southlands/ Glencrest development are the following: (they are located just across the highway on the Mount Pearl side
- Quiznos - Canadian Tire - Kent - Wal Mart - Staples - Dominion - the source - Pizza Delight - Marks Work wearhouse - Reitmans - Halmark - Easyhome - Rogers - Bulk Barn - Smithy's - Sobeys - A&W - Wendys They will probably put in a boston Pizza and Swiss Chalet is already rumoured to go in Mount Pearl.. maybe a montanas? I do not know whic Grocry store that will be as indicated in the plan .. also the hardware, maybe a home depot? seems a bit small though I dont know? |

Here's the map for Dartmouth Crossing. What's great about there is they have the "big box stores" (Walmart, Home Depot, Canadian Tire and a few others) in one area, with Costco being in a separate area. Then they have smaller retail stores, mainly clothing, in another area with three restaurants being onside of an Empire Theatres. When I was there I spent my time in the area of the clothing stores and didn't even realize that Walmart and Canadian Tire was only hundreds of feet away, and I was there for a day and a half.
The clothing stores area is compact, pedestrian friendly, and the buildings look much nicer then Stavanger Drive. http://www.dartmouthcrossing.com/sto...on-and-map.php |

I truly hope that is how Dannyland will look |
I wonder how large the Glencrest commercial development will be. Will it be larger than Dartmouth Crossing? I though I read somewhere that it will be?

I heard that the supermarket in the new Soundlands/Glencrest development is going to be Coleman's.

Would make sense....though wasn't Coleman's supposed to go closer to the intersection at Ruby Line? |
