What kind of frequency are we talking here?

KLM seems like the airline with the best chance of making YEG-Europe work well.

ArchDaily recently did an article on the new YEG combined control & office tower.

I went to Edmonton last winter. That's the first building in Western Canada I ever saw, and it didn't disappoint.

connect2source Jun 28, 2014 7:29 PM

I love the modernist feel to the Calgary expansion, it's totally 'current' and stunning and has the look of European Airports, also love the experiment and organic feel of the Edmonton tower and hotel.

The YVR expansion, however, is dull and stuck in the 90's. YVR needs to get over the 20 year-old design of the 1996 International Terminal expansion and stop basing new additions and renos on matching it and come up with something bold and current. I hope the interior of the Pier A-B redo doesn't include those chaotic fluorescent fixtures meant to resemble river logs.

SFUVancouver Jun 28, 2014 9:28 PM

^ I agree to a degree. YVR has some areas that feel very current, like the domestic check-in area, despite having been re-done a decade and a half ago, while others, like the Link Building, have barely had the paint dry but look about 15 to 20 years old. It's the international terminal vernacular (pre-security) that just feels a bit dated now. Hopefully the transborder terminal, when its built at the end of the decade or thereabouts, will provide impetus to re-do the International Terminal.

It was interesting seeing planes flying overhead today where none had flown before.

Not quite sure why YYT is sharing this - it seems unlikely this service would ever be expanded to Newfoundland. Perhaps PAL has something in the works for this province?

FlyShuttle's 78-passenger flight will function like a bus or a train, making stops for passengers to board or disembark. The route will launch Oct. 26 and tickets are set to cost about $51 one-way.

Well this is essentially what PAL is here now. Get a flight to Wabush from St. John's and you can end up stopping in Deer Lake, St. Anthony and Goose Bay first without getting off the plane. Then it turns around hitting all or most of the same places on the way back. They just need a faster and quieter plane because the current ones are brutally slow and noisy....and ridiculously expensive. You can fly with Air Canada from St. John's to Los Angeles cheaper than going to Lab City on PAL.

^ If they want to make multi-stop flights work, they need to find a way to load & unload faster. I was on a Edmonton->Toronto->Ottawa WestJet flight earlier this year, and we took almost an hour in Toronto unloading & loading passengers. Perhaps banning overhead bin storage on these flights?

Coldrsx Jun 30, 2014 2:52 PM

Just back from YQB and YUL.

YQB - never been before, quite a nice little airport I must say. A few more amenities/food options would be nice and I would not want to be coming off a large international flight there, but overall quite impressed.

YUL - Domestic side is cramped.

Sounds like it could be sharing with YYC perhaps the more I hear about it.

YYC-YEG-AMS

AMS-YEG-YYC?

Maybe the British are planning to steal us back?

A friend of jeddy1989's just spied this at YYT:

There was a proposal in the 1970s to establish such a service here, making use of airports and airfields at St. Andrew's, Stephenville, Frenchman's Cove (the original site proposed for a Corner Brook airport), Springdale, Gander, Clarenville, Winterland, and St. John's.

It was a novel idea at a time when driving was only coming into its own a legitimate way to travel across the island. Flying, even with 12 stops, was faster than the train, and the highway has never been great.

SignalHillHiker Jun 30, 2014 9:58 PM

Walking was faster than the train.

i think that is a problem of having Toronto a stop on one of the mile runs.

For years WestJet had the following route:
London (Ontario) - Winnipeg - Saskatoon - Calgary - Vancouver - Prince George

I have also done the Air Canada: Halifax - Ottawa - Saskatoon flight a few times.

Breakneck pace continuing at YVR, with growth of 10% in May, including nearly 17% growth in Asia/Pac.

Interesting fact contained with the link, the number of jets to YVR actually declined 0.4%, showing an increase in load as well as larger planes.

I almost couldn't believe my eyes. 10% growth overall... Wow!

Overall up 10.0% YTD 8.4%
Domestic up 7.2% YTD 6.9%
Transborder up 12.3% YTD 8.9%
Asia Pacific up 16.9% YTD 13.2%
Europe up 10.0% YTD 10.4%
Misc Int'l up 6.0% YTD 3.6%

In pax terms that's 57,000 more domestic, 43,000 more transborder, 35,000 more Asia Pacific, 11,000 more Europe, 1,400 more Misc Int'l. Overall up approx 148,000 pax from May 2013. That's huge growth.

If this trend continues, and it should, YVR should record its first 2M pax month in August. July should come close but not quite.

Cargo also showing decent 5.3% growth in May.

Interesting both Toronto and Vancouver passenger numbers are up but the number of movements is down. Any thoughts if this is the result of Air Canada shifting to higher density in the new Rogue aircraft its new high density 777 or it is a more broad move across all the airlines.

i read that WestJet was selling some of their older 737-700 to Southwest in the US and replacing them with new larger 737-800.
